man,
I finally got around to starting Marvelous Mrs Maisel last week. I just assumed it was going to be like Hacks and Fleabag, which were both funny shows, but it is so much more. It has the production quality of Mad Men, and after 2.5 seasons I think I would rank it pretty high up on my All Time Greats list.

(I haven't read anything online about it as I have found that no matter the show people tend to eventually turn negative towards them and I prefer to binge with no expectations. Maybe it falls off a cliff and my initial take sounds ridiculous, but so far I am loving it)
I'll try Maisel, but before seeing it, it sounds like you're underselling Fleabag.
Maisel is good but it's no Fleabag.
man, that Fleabag... that was not good.
Can you please explain if it was something you ate, or maybe your wife's fault... But at what point did you become a blithering idiot?
you can't be serious thinking that show was any good... at all. blech. even my wife, who never, ever, ever quits a show even if she absolutely hates it.. could not finish this one. she hung in a bit after i bailed but quit because it sucked so much.
Loved it. You're wrong

was a big Parker Lewis Can't Lose fan, enjoyed Malcolm in the Middle but generally find it off-putting

Big-time sci-fi or "spy action" (like Jack Ryan) fan here. Just finished Ahsoka. Anything recent that's on either Netflix or Amazon worth checking out? I have some travel coming up and I like downloading stuff for my flights. May just grab a couple of movies that look decent but open to starting a new series.
It's an undertaking and a grind at times and not on Netflix or Amazon, but I thought Foundation on Apple TV was a worthwhile sci-fi watch. Found it close enough to Dune that I just wanted the second Dune movie to come out more.
I'll second this. Foundation is excellent.
How do the books compare to the show? Was just about to start the first prequel. Thx
I personally have not read the books although I mean to. At this point, I'm going to wait until the show is over and read them.

My wife, who is a bigger sci fi nerd than I am, has read the books and says they're fantastic.

Finished Usher.

It's good... And I enjoyed how they brought the Poe into it. I didn't enjoy how the episodic conceit played out in the short term ep to ep... But it makes sense in the overall story arc.

Has "Lessons in Chemistry" (Apple) been mentioned in here yet? Another great show put out by Apple TV. Stars Brie Larson, who I am normally not a huge fan of, but she really hits this role out of the park. Show grabs you right out of the gate. Well written, great acting and beautifully shot.

Highly recommend.
Agree with this; wife talked me into it as she had just read the book but it’s very well done

Haven’t watched it yet, but the book was great. Looking forward to it.

Perfect spouse content. Not enough of this sadly though with this, British Bakeoff and The Gilded Age back next week I'm in good shape for the next month and half or so.

And I would usual list Drops of God here but my wife didn't latch onto it. Too many languages, but I thought it was great. Whoever compared it to Queens Gambit was on the money.

That was me! Glad someone else thought so too. Loved that show.

Shoresy season 2 is out on Hulu. I watched the first 4 episodes. I'm a hockey guy, but it was a little too hockey-heavy. Pretty much switching back and forth between low-level hockey and lingerie shots. Now that I describe it that way, it's better than I thought.

Lupin season 3 is good but definitely the weakest season yet. There are a few jump the shark moments for sure.

One thing is for sure, Omar Sy needs to be in more things. HE is fantastic in everything he's been in.

Stumbled upon Lucifer. Through the first season. It's entertaining so far. Not a lot to it but an interesting take on the devil.
Watched most of s1, maybe into s2. Got very repetitive and didn't go anywhere for me so I dropped it. Mazi was a lot of fun.
Heard it kind of goes off the rails into S3 though.
S1 was good though.
Finished off the series. It does change quite a bit throughout the run but I thought it was a very interesting take on the devil and his growth with respect to heaven/hell and his place in all of it. Interesting characters throughout bringing in Adam, Eve, God himself, and various other angels along the way. It wasn't the best ever TV but I thought it was entertaining enough to get through it.

Mazikeen was a great character for sure. Her transformation was interesting.

Since we don't really have a new movie thread, and this is based on an old tv show:

Looks pretty awesome/cheesy and has hotties for every persuasion: Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, the cougar from Ted Lasso

i loved the story and every scene is shot gorgeously and the sound track is good too take that to the bank brohans

Onimusha (Netflix): Anime, 8 episodes. The description sounded like Seven Samurai with zombies. There was one short scene a bit like that, but it went a different direction. I thought this was pretty awful, but gutted it out because so many people like anime and I wanted to give it an honest try. This looked pretty true to the form from the glimpses I’ve gotten of some shows my son has watched. Many ridiculous fights with increasingly silly demons… yawn. I’ll go back to being an old who doesn’t get anime now.

Just started Fargo. *******, this is good. Halfway through the first episode, I had a pretty good idea where everything was going for the season, but then all of that stuff happened... by the end of the first episode. You know something's going to be good when that happens.

Whole thing is good, but season 1 is amazing

Oh hell yeah

The latest WWII series from Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman – the people responsible for “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific” – premieres January 26
Very in. The look is phenomenal. Like all things latter day Spielberg I'm leery of the schmaltz but I'll still watch for sure.

Maybe most people know this but, you were much more likely to be killed if you were an airman than an infantryman.

What if you were a seaman?

The Volcano: Rescue From Whakaari

The story of the tourists that were killed and badly injured when New Zealand's Whakaari volcano erupted.

Very good

Thanks for posting this one. Based on your recommendation, I watched it last night and definitely agree it's a great (albeit difficult) watch. I have some quibbles with the filmmaking itself, but the stories were amazing. Those guys that did the helicopter rescues...well, "heroes" seems like an understatement.

I'm a big James Bond fan so I checked out 007: Road to a Million, the new 007-themed reality show on Amazon. Teams of two contestants travel to locations from Bond films to perform physical challenges and answer multiple choice questions. I made it through two of the eight episodes and there doesn't appear to be any interaction between the teams. Each team is given a different set of challenges and get eliminated when they answer a question incorrectly. The challenges aren't particularly Bond-like; instead of shooting or car chases you get two brothers from Croydon trying to measure a live snake.

Brian Cox appears in cutscenes as "The Controller", sort of a cross between M and Logan Roy. He's the best thing about the show which isn't saying a lot.

I was so mad when I turned it on. Because of my A.D.D. probably, I was expecting a TV James Bond series. What a disappointment when it was a GAME SHOW.

We started watching The X-Files for the first time. Does it hold up throughout or is there a drop-off at some point?
