Guys, touche, but you'd be genuinely shocked how many clients or potential clients think it works the way it does on TV. And so it's just annoying to know that there are shows out there that perpetuate these myths and misnomers that I have to waste time dispelling.

Does the defense case hold water?

One more word and I'll hold you in contempt of court.

Your honor, I'm going to need a little leeway here.

You guys are giving me heartburn.

Just assume that pretty much any TV/movie lawyer would be disbarred for what they do.

Now, my above comments notwithstanding, A Few Good Men is outstanding. The conversation Cruise has with his client when his client bitches about the really good plea offer is, while hyperbolic (note: I have actually once thrown my briefcase against a wall during a similar conversation where my client was facing literally 20 years if convicted and I got him a misdemeanor with no jail and just unsupervised probation), fantastic. And, I could totally see young energetic lawyer doing something similar to "strenuously object[ing]." In fact, IIRC a prosecutor in a trial of mine once "strenuously objected" and my co-counsel and I had to hold in our laughter.

A Few Good Men (for a glimpse into what it's actually like to do criminal law - though just assume a lawyer has >50 cases instead of just the one Cruise has) and My Cousin Vinnie (for accurate procedure and evidence) are the two exceptions to the general rule that TV/movie portrayals are wholly unrealistic.

ETA: A Time to Kill is good for courtroom presentation by a lawyer and for highlighting some of the moral issues. That said, the defense was basically jury nullification and should have been barred as, by law, the Defendant should have been found guilty.

Started watching Suits on Netflix. Not a bad show but I can see it getting tiresome binging it with the same formula happening every episode.
Totally what an average day in a law firm looks like...

:wall:

I tried watching this recently. Made it about 20 minutes before turning it off. Usually I don't care if the legal stuff isn't right (see, e.g., parts of "Succession"), but this one was just too much. I burst into laughter when they introduced the guy as "our best closer," as if that were a position. Then the "closer" proceeded to curse out and trick his client into doing something, and I think it was at that point that I just couldn't.
I recall that scene and it's where I lost any interest in it too (which, IIRC, was on the heels of them hiring a guy to practice law without a law license).

I just can't do Suits and the Netflix series version of Lincoln Lawyer. They're just way too much nonsense.
Next I suppose you are going to say hospitals aren't actually run like Grey's Anatomy and House and that being a CSI isn't like it is on all those CSI series or being a cop isn't like it is on the 50 different cops shows.
I'm a journalist and I have a hard time watching TV shows and movies about newspapers/journalism. The only one I really liked was The Post, and that was mainly because it was based on a true story and the events in the movie really did happen.
Don't think I've seen you mention that before, no wonder your writeups are so awesome.

Only if they catch you.

"Spotlight" was a pretty good portrayal of real-life reporting. "The Paper" was a long time ago but was fun. "A clipboard and a confident wave will get you into any building in the world."

Just finished Squid Game the Reality game show contest on Netflix. It was decent. Players get eliminated but don’t die, until there’s one left who wins $4,560,000
I'll take the other tack here. Most of the way through; easily the most entertained I've been in a while. Superb show.

Friend of mine got pretty far in that game. Final 30 or something like that

I have heard lawyers say that My Cousin Vinny is surprisingly accurate, in particular Pesci's strategy with dealing with people on the witness stand (Tomei and Murray Chaykin--the grits guy).

Put me on the pretty meh for “Leave the World Behind”. Some ok stuff but that ending oooof.
Keeping this vague since don’t know how to use spoiler tag (but don’t read if haven’t seen yet, to be safe)…

What more did they need to spell out? Guy group said they need to get to that house. Girl group basically knew where that house is and where they were going to next. All that was gonna happen outside of that house was seen in the distance.

Ultimately they all would get to that point together by becoming Friends. (A total of 6 main characters…likely not a coincidence)

There’s also a subtext…the entire movie the daughter didn’t know how the show ended, just her imagination to predict. The viewer of this movie internally telling her to get over it already. Now the viewer of this movie is ultimately in the same space as the daughter when the screen went to black and knows how she felt.

Can anyone recommend a scifi show, based on a book, where they don't go changing all the characters around. Peter Jackson made me mad when he ruined the Ents and other stuff, but Wheel of Time and Foundation are just taking it to another level and ruining great books.

Great synopsis

I will say at first I was thinking "that's it" ??

But after an hour or so as I rethought it over this is what I came to conclude as well ..
To survive what was coming you'll need Friends you can trust.

I thought Silo on Apple TV did a good job with the books but I know it had some detractors.

Watching this WW2 thing on Netflix now.

Dont read if you don’t want spoilers….

The daughter finding the DVD was painfully obvious I guess was my complaint. Was hoping for a bit more.

It’s obvious all 6 would end up in that bunker. You need to see them all sitting on a couch watching a show together?

I liked it.

We finished season two of Welcome to Wrexham. I'm not really a soccer fan and knew how the season would end but none of that mattered. Still really enjoyed it. Can't say enough about Rob and Ryan but don't need to. They will be legends in that city for all time. Kudos to them.

Leave The World Behind on Netflix. Thumbs up.

I like the plot but not the execution. I won't ruin it for those that haven't seen it. The premise is believable. It lacks believable emotion/intensity that you would expect about halfway through it. Also Julia Robert looks better at 56 than 26.

Really liked the Fallout trailer, the atmosphere is definitely there. Despite the problems in the latter seasons of Westworld, love the producers involved who also did The Peripheral which my wife and I really liked but unfortunately got cancelled.

Halo season 2 trailer looks a LOT better than season 1. Hopefully they deliver the goods after all the criticisms of season 1 (personally I liked it despite the flaws.)
