Finished Pachinko last week and it's very good. 4 generations of a Korean family living under Japanese control from 1915 to 1990 or so. Prior to watching it I had finished the Weissensee Saga, set in East Germany from 1980 to 1990. They're in vastly different cultures but both show the effects of oppressive governments on people's lives.
Anyway, back to Pachinko. The family stories and conflicts and losses were played out well, not by narration but by actually showing what happened. The overwhelming government influence in daily lives was shown believably time and time again. The scene changes from one generation to another were done well. Like a character from 1945 looking up, seeing birds flying, 10 seconds of the birds flying, and then settling back into a scene in 1989 seamlessly.
And there were believable characters to care about, who were under duress and doing their best regardless. Really good series.

I haven't watched baseball in a long time. Maybe 15 years. I know who is in the World Series this year, but I literally couldn't name 3 players total. Watching this really brought me back and reminded me how much I enjoyed it back then. I knew all the players. I could rattle off teams bull pens. Crazy. Those two teams were so loaded and fun to watch. Oh well. On to NFL. Ha haAt first glance, I had no interest in watching it. Yankees and Red Sox are both probably in my "top five" of least liked teams. That said, I just happened to see the intro/trailer the other night, and I was sucked in. There are so many pieces to that story that are fascinating, in my opinion, and the series is well-done in the sense that I think just about everyone can come away from having watched it feeling like they got something enjoyable out of it.
Obviously, Red Sox fans would love it. As a MIN fan, it makes me wish there was something similar about the '87 or '91 Twins. Not that those stories were anything like Boston's in 2004, but the behind-the-scenes interviews were what I enjoyed.... Millar, Varitek, Tito, Ortiz, Nomar (pre-trade), a VERY young Theo Epstein, etc. At the same time, I think the story very much respected the tradition/history of the Yankees as well. I thought they did a good job of telling both sides of the story, so to speak.
And, as a general baseball fan, there are/were just so many interesting pieces to this. I live in the greater LA area now, and despite my efforts to get my 12YO son to follow the Twins, he's become a Dodger fan. And, I guess I don't blame him... He really has no reason to be anything else. But, watching it with him made it even more enjoyable. He got to see Dave Roberts pinch-running (and stealing a base) at one point in the piece. At another point, they're interviewing Roberts after he's traded to the Dodgers. Later, my son is asking me "Are the Red Sox and Yankees still rivals?" At another point, he said "Wait a minute... How can David Ortiz and Derek Jeter sit next to each other post-game today if they're rivals?"I pointed out that ARod is at that table as well, and that things can change a bit over time, as people get older/mature, etc. But, the rivalry is still the rivalry.
There are also just a lot of pieces to that story that I had somewhat forgotten about... The brawl with Varitek/ARod getting into it, Pedro tossing Don Zimmer aside, the "almost" trade of ARod to the Sox, the trade of Nomar that included Twin Doug Mienkiewicz, Schilling's bloody ankle, etc. And, there were some things that I had never heard about before... The players going to the bar in uniform after winning the divisional series (I think it was), and the story about them foregoing BP in NY to do shots of whiskey in the clubhouse, were both pretty classic.
I guess I would say that, no matter who you root for, if you're a baseball enthusiast, you'll probably find it to be an enjoyable watch.
If you know nothing about comics, the penguin, any back story is this still ok to dive into? Basically is it worthwhile as a stand alone product with no backstory knowledge?

Yes. My wife and I are watching it. She hasn't seen The Batman movie, never read the comics and is enjoying the show as a drama. She hasn't found herself lost because she didn't have prior knowledge of the character.

I think so. I'm not a comic movie fanatic, but I've loved this as a standalone, I also think there's a good chance in the last two episodes, they might reveal a bit of Penguin's past to explain some of how he became who he is. They've done some background on other characters but not a lot.

I might have misinterpreted or read this wrong, but I thought I'd seen recommendations in here for The Perfect Couple on Netflix, so we started that up a couple of weeks ago. Just six episodes, so how bad could this be?
SPOILER ALERT: It could be really, really bad. But even worse, it was good enough in the first 1.5 episodes that we committed to it, so felt we had to see it through. Finished it on Saturday and I've been getting progressively angrier at how bad it was. Like, ridiculous plot, unbelievable characters, and over-acting at every turn. Worst of all, it was basically just a soap opera! I expected a murder-mystery type of thing. Ugh.

Following up with review of the Weissensee Saga (on MHz Choice):
Series following 2 families in East Berlin from 1980 to 1990 during the gradual reunification of East and West Germany. One family is just a mom and daughter, who suffer some unspeakable stuff at the hands of the Stasi. The other family is a Stasi family, with Dad and oldest son both high-ranking members with the ability to screw with people's lives at will. And screwing with people's lives is done in spades.
Well-acted and well-scripted, lots of wrenching moments, there are characters you grow to despise or like, characters change over time for believable reasons, and some very attractive German actresses have prominent roles (Hannah Herzsprung, Anna Loos, Jordis Triebel). Lisa Wagner also has a prominent role and does a good job with it. The oldest son of the Stasi family is a character you'll hate forever.
I watched the series alone, as my wife goes to bed earlier than I do and I have trouble getting to sleep, so I watch 30-60 minutes of something every night. I enjoyed it and figured she would too, so I waited a month or 2 (so I could forget a lot of it) and then we watched it together. She also liked it a lot.

MHz Choice ---- it's a streaming service for mostly European series (but constantly adding other countries), and I think it's great. You can get it freestanding, or as an add-on to Prime Video. Either of those choices cost $7.99/month, but the freestanding version just lowered its price to $79.99/yr. which is a little bit cheaper. I've gotten far more hours of enjoyable watching from them than from Hulu.

The wife started this and I jumped in at the beginning. Aborted about ep2 expecting everything you described. Even the wife said this wasn't going to be my kind of show.
Feel like there's been other shows that follow almost identical formula of: mysterious death, rich people, Greek chorus of witnesses and/or cops who provide background and plot explanation, "drama".

FWIW, we had the same takeaway which is that is started out decent enough that forced the viewer to see it through.

Sweetpea was awful, it's supposed to be a dark comedy. My wife and I didn't find any comedy in it, dark or otherwise.
The premise is the lead character Rhiannon endured a childhood of bullying. She now leads a quiet life as an admin assistant at a local newspaper, living with her father and dog. However, her father's death leads to a chance encounter with a stranger that changes everything.
That premise isn't entirely accurate, and I won't spoil it for anyone who wants to watch it, but I would not waste your time.

I genuinely enjoyed Halo. Never played the game, but it works as stand alone sci fi. Decent TV show.Just watched season 1 of HALO, don't play the game, knew nothing of the story. Something to watch while riding a bike I guess

Started watching Season 2 of The Diplomat with Keri Russell last night. Not sure if I'm just old or what, but I really feel like I need to re-watch Season 1 just to have some sort of idea of what's going on. 
I watched the Season 1 recap and was asking myself whether I really did finish Season 1. I know I did (I saw the season-ending "cliff hanger" scene), but 80% of the recap didn't look familiar.
That said, decent show.

Just finished up all the seasons of Bosch on Prime. Thought each season was done very well. It helps I enjoyed the books as well.
There were days I'd sit down to watch an episode and find myself 3 hours later wondering if I had time for one more.

By the way, Bosch and his daughters love of listening old jazz from John Coltrane and Miles Davis made me start listening to more Jazz on Prime like Jazz for reading playlist, and soft Jazz stations.
