Strength of Schedule for 2009 (1 Viewer)

Hey everyone,

I thought we could get a discussion going about the teams' anticipated strength of schedule for next season to help identify some possible values to pursue in trades during the off-season.

We don't know the teams' precise schedules, but we know their list of opponents:

Some initial observations . . . Baltimore and Pittsburgh both appear to have unusually easy schedules, and about half of Jacksonville's schedule consists of 2008 bottom 10 defenses.

(going by 2008) yeah Jax might have an easy schedule looking at some of the Ds, but if you think of the good Ds they play and add some of the explosive offenses, it's not so easy.

Keeping in mind they struggled in 08, I don't see them beating Indy or TEN right now; that's 4 Ls right there. Pats should beat them. Houston probably split and who knows about the Jets if they get a QB. Could be up to 7 Ls right there.

I'm not a big SOS guy but definitely prefer a fresh look once teams have regrouped rather than looking back at 08.

I think Jax just needs to get things ironned out there. After they lost their OL to injury they did some sloppy things too and that doesn't excuse their defensive play at all. IMO They were far better than they performed in 08. If they get some OL depth and replace Freddie T(because MJD does need to rest on occasion), I think they're going to seem like a completely different team than in 08.

going by this SOS , the Washington Redskins will have one of , if not the easiest schedules in the entire NFL...

Clinton Portis might lead the league in rushing in '09..this could be a 1700 yard/15-20 TD season for him..

Just check the opponents:

Washington

Home: Dallas, NY Giants, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Denver, Kansas CityAway: Dallas, NY Giants, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Carolina, Detroit, Oakland, San Diego

all teams in caps were bottom-feeders in terms of rushing defense in 2008.

not ALL of them will greatly improve at stopping the run..

Dallas was somewhat weak against the run last season..Philly will fall apart with the recent losses on defense, and the Giants weren't particularly great against the run down the stretch of the 2008 season...

we know Detroit,Oak, St Lou, N.O., KC, Atl, SD, TB have a LONG way to go before they drastically improve they're rush defense..

They really need some new clothes before they can iron things out. Given that the team seems to be in rebuild mode, I'm not optimistic about the Jaguars in the near future.

While the AFC West might have some uninspiring teams, the NFC South can be a bear to play. Add in 6 tough divisional games and the Skins have a very representative schedule. As for the Ravens, the AFC West and NFC North is certainly easier on paper than last year's tandem of AFC South and NFC East, but things change fast in the NFL. When I think about how thin their margin for error was in 2008, it's not hard for me to believe that they'll win fewer games this year even with the "easier" schedule.

SoS is interesting, if not a little bit elusive. Even so, to realize that the Steelers won the Superbowl with the toughest SoS since 1970 is a remarkable thought. I wonder how many times the team with the #1 SoS has won the SB.
