Stuck in CT with COVID, Delta requires $1100 to change flight (1 Viewer)

We were supposed to fly out this coming Wed. We got exposed Thur. Wife felt crummy Saturday nad I was a little achey. She was mild 100.2 temp and mine was normal. We both self-tested and it came out positive.

I called Delta to see about changing my flight. Told them our story and was informed that I now could not board a Delta flight without a negative test and to change will be $1100. If we had said nothing and been irresponsible, we could have boarded and traveled as schedule, but because we have tried to be responsible and not infect others, we are facing huge surcharges. And if we are not testing negative by the next flight we will face further surcharges for another flight. PLus hotel and car.

Any advice?

I’ve done my best to heed all the advice and stay home when sick, etc. but that’s some BS. I’d be tempted to just double mask and go but I’m guessing that’s not an option any more? They have your name and flight, right?

You aren't going to test negative for a few weeks most likely

After a lot of arguing I got transferred to a supervisor who changed my flight to Saturday for no charge. But she emphasized it was a one-time deal and any more changes would incur charges. I guess I'll be testing positive by Friday.

I hope this is not accurate.

It was for my wife. But CDC guidelines say you're fine to leave isolation 5 days after symptom onset and can travel if wearing a "high quality" mask.

If you had symptoms and:

Your symptoms are improving

You may end isolation after day 5 if:
  • You are fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication).
I have ended isolation but still need to continue wearing my mask per CDC’s guidance.

  • Do not travel on public transportation such as airplanes, buses, and trains if you will not be able to wear a high-quality mask or respirator when around others indoors for the full duration of your trip.
  • If you travel, wear a high-quality mask or respirator the entire time you are around others indoors.

Don't get on the flight and potentially expose who know how many on the plane to COVID. That's terrible advice.

It's a **** situation and the airlines are being huge dicks about it, but one that must be accounted for when traveling while COVID is still here.

In the hospital I work, when Covid started our first positive case was a lady who tested positive for over two months before they finally just told her to come back to work.

As of now, our patients are considered "Covid recovered" 5 days after a positive test IF they are symptom free. If they still have a fever we continue precautions for up to 10 days after a positive test.

We have not been re-testing people for almost two years now because of how long people test positive for. There is no point because we know they will still test positive for several weeks or even months.

The tricky part is knowing how much time must pass before a reinfection can occur. There are no good answers for that.

Rent a car and drive.
Costs way more than 1100
damn. car rentals are more than I thought these days
$450-500 rental for 2-3 days
$300-400 for gas

I doubt it costs $1100, but it won’t be that far off.
I started doing the math and I think it's pretty close, TBH. I assumed 3 days with of driving ($100/day, $300 total). $300 for gas (25 mpg & however far it is). 2 hotel nights ($150/night x2) and it gets close. But then, I looked up car rentals in Hartfofd, and it closer to $250/day and that blows the whole thing up.
