Fundamentally the contest is about finding value amongst the fixed values (not unlike a precalculated salary cap league)...what's interesting is to see which players are getting selected most, indicating that a majority of participants believe they are "values"...two names I'm seeing a lot are Willie Parker and Terry Glenn...I'm wondering if Doug can run a quick query over the entries and post some information on maybe the top 10 values (by collective thinking) by posotion...I think the results would be very interesting...
Yes, I definitely will be doing that, probably later tonight. And I'll also post the average number of dollars spent at each position. There's really no end to the kind of fun you can have with these sorts of queries, so I hope to run some more interesting statistics as well. But it depends on how much time I can find in the next few days. I definitely will get a list of most popular players up soon though.I know the most popular player overall is Ben Watson. I'm pretty sure Frank Gore is second (he was near the top even before the Barlow trade). If memory serves, the top WRs were Glenn, Troy Williamson, Houshmandzadeh, and Michael Clayton. My memory is hazy, but names that pop into my head on QBs are Simms, Delhomme, Rivers, and Palmer.More later...

I am not. You have to take your chances some place. A stud RB is irreplaceable and will not come out of any of the under $10 players. There will be a few stud recievers below the $10 mark but you must be lucky enough to pick them.
:goodposting: IMO, you have a much better chance at some cheap WR stepping up and becoming at least a semi-stud than lucking out and winning the lottery with the one Mike Anderson or Willie Parker needle in a haystack that pops up each season.
Very, VERY :goodposting: Some people never learn....
RB depth in PPR survivor contests doesn't always equal success. Personally, in a contest such as this, it is my inclination to pick as many high reception receivers as possible. Stud WRs can carry a team when you have steady, but non-flashy RBs.

 Are people not allowed to state their opinions or takes? Why is he suddenly tossed aside as not capable of winning a league? If you feel different then tell the rest of us what your recipe is for success so we can all learn. Thanks.
Uhhhh...have you read this thread yet? I have already made comments on what I think the recipe to win would be. It's not taking high priced WRs. Any player can have a bad game. With WR it's magnified because they are dependant on QB's who may also have a bad game. By no fault of their own, it would then make them have a bad game. I would much rather stockpile up on middle of the road type WR that should get solid, not spectacular numbers each week.
Most people don't understand how survivor contests work. Most people load up on RB depth and the incremental increase they realize by spending money there is at most 10 to 12 points a week, while they scrimp on their WRs and try to catch lightning in a bottle every week it actually ends up costing people points when their WR2 and WR3 only put up 8 points combined. This is even more pronounce in PPR contests. Historically, RBs score more consistant week to week than WRs. What this means is that in order to protect against the off week, you need to have a stable of WRs who have 60+ receptions. The difference between a WR with 50 receptions and a WR with 80 receptions is 30 pts. If you get two WR with 80+ receptions, then you have added the equivalent of 600 yds for a running back.IMO, taking lesser RB starters allows you to have more high reception WRs on your roster which I beleive is an advantage. In Fitz, Chambers, Housh, Glenn, Engram, Bryant and Givens I beleive I have a group that will put up high receptions and be protected against down weeks. I will be happy if I get WR2/WR3 production week to week out of my RBs.As for the never winning comment, I made the finals in FBG staff survivor contests in the three in which I have participated.

QB - Peyton Manning - 29 QB - Chris Simms - 10QB - J.P. Losman - 6Palmer is best value, but Manning will be bigger scorer. Only see Simms counting in the bye week and perhaps one other.RB - Shaun Alexander - 69RB - Willie Parker - 32RB - Frank Gore - 10RB - Jerious Norwood - 2RB - Derrick Blaylock - 1Had to get one of the top 3. Kind of wish I had spent $2 more for LT. Wanted to bump up and get Rudi instead of Willie but could not sqeeze $10 off.WR - Reggie Wayne - 35WR - Lee Evans - 14WR - Terry Glenn - 13WR - Bobby Engram - 4WR - Troy Williamson - 4WR - Doug Gabriel - 1WR - Ronald Curry - 1I think Reggie may end up with bigger numbers than Harrison this year. Took a chance that Evans and Glenn will put up very good numbers. I think Glen will be Bledsoe'f favorite target, not sure about Evans as Buffalo might suck. A couple of my bottom four will produce decent seasons.TE - Ben Watson - 9TE - Tony Scheffler - 1Watson is easily the best value at TE. Could end up #2 TE in the league. Tony will surprise some, but not really counting on that.PK - Jason Elam - 3PK - Stephen Gostkowski - 1Good offenses, good kickers.TD - Miami Dolphins - 3TD - Cincinnati Bengals - 2Miami gets lots of sacks, Cincinnati gets lots of turnovers and thus scoring chances. Thats all that counts in this.
I like the way you think. My team:QB - Peyton Manning - 29QB - Chris Simms - 10QB - J.P. Losman - 6Only need 1 or 2 good games from Sims/LosmanRB - LaDainian Tomlinson - 71RB - Willie Parker - 32RB - Reggie Bush - 22RB - Michael Turner - 5RB - Vernand Morency - 1Started with Rudi, but upgraded to LT. Thought about Gore instead of Bush, but the drop off is bigger than the gain I could find at WR for the same cash. Turner's a cheap handcuff in case anything knocks out LT for a week or two.WR - Terry Glenn - 13WR - Michael Clayton - 9WR - Antonio Bryant - 9WR - Isaac Bruce - 6WR - Nate Burleson - 6WR - Troy Williamson - 4WR - Travis Taylor - 2No studs, but a lot of guys capable of occasional big games. With Manning & LT for consistent scoring, that's all I should need here (as long as they don't time all their big weeks together).TE - Ben Watson - 9TE - Heath Miller - 7Originally had Heap, but downgraded to get LT. PK - Jeff Reed - 2PK - David Akers - 2ehhh, kickersTD - Miami Dolphins - 3TD - Cincinnati Bengals - 2Hopefully Cincy continues to be a turnover machine.According to DD, my worst week is Week 3 (LT's bye), but that's a good thing--only have to be in the top 8000 to continue.

I am hoping that my grouping of #2 WRs out play their projections and that combined with solid QBs and RBs that my roster can sustain me over the course of the season. Big risk....Big reward!!!

QB - Donovan McNabb - 22

QB - Chris Simms - 10

QB - Jay Cutler - 4

I like McNabb this year even without TO. Simms was an easy pick. Cutler could, could start by mid-season.

RB - Ronnie Brown - 52

RB - Willie Parker - 32

RB - DeAngelo Williams - 11

RB - Marion Barber III - 10

RB - Jerome Harrison - 2

Really like Brown this year. Surprised not to see him on more rosters. Parker was an easy pick. Debating Williams vs Maroney for awhile and finally went with Williams due to bye week. Barber will be getting plenty of time this year. He may be sharing time with Jones. Harrison is my wildcard. I think he will get lots of 3rd down receptions and he could end up stealing some carries from Droughns.

WR - Reggie Wayne - 35

WR - Javon Walker - 23

WR - Terry Glenn - 13

WR - Michael Jenkins - 5

WR - Chris Henry - 2

WR - Greg Jennings - 2

WR - Drew Carter - 1

Think Wayne passes Harrison this year. Like Walker at 23. Glenn was an easy choice. I think Jenkins will have an excellent year and for $5? Easy choice. Henry will keep his head on straight and be a great play :crossesfingers: Jennings was an easy choice for $2 and I like Carter to get some long TDs this year.

TE - Ben Watson - 9

TE - Ben Troupe - 8

Great combo that I have in 2 other leagues.

PK - Matt Stover - 2

PK - Lawrence Tynes - 2

Stover only my 2nd week 7 Bye and Tynes has the early week 3 Bye.

TD - Miami Dolphins - 3

TD - Arizona Cardinals - 2

Miami will be solid and I like ARI as a sleeper Defense this year.

QB - Trent Green - 15

QB - Chris Simms - 10

QB - J.P. Losman - 6

Total: 31 - Minimal $ for QB3, as I don't expect to use him much, if at all.

RB - Rudi Johnson - 42

RB - Reggie Bush - 22

RB - Frank Gore - 10

RB - Kevan Barlow - 6

RB - Jerious Norwood - 2

Total: 82 - Bush/Gore both with week 7 byes, but value seemed too good to pass up. I'll need Barlow or Norwood to (sorry, Joe) STEP UP that week

WR - Reggie Wayne - 35

WR - Roy Williams - 27

WR - T.J. Houshmandzadeh - 23

WR - Matt Jones - 14

WR - Terry Glenn - 13

Really enjoyed this contest. If nothing else, it helped me prepare for my other drafts. The work and prize money that go into it are fantastic.

I wanted balanced bye weeks, preferably early, with my second stringers facing soft

My team is predicated around one key assumption: the #1 WR in Carolina will be a monster. Smitty and Key are both viable in that slot, with adequate depth in the real world now that Carter is progressing so well. I hope to have a Stud WR anchor my corps every week. *(except week 9)

I was *this* close to having LT2 and Turner, but decided that four starters were better than one "sure" stud all year burning 2 spots. MoMo is simply a gamble that could pay off big, and with SEA's weak rushing schedule, maybe some stray TDs.

Next consideration was that I wanted balanced bye weeks, preferably early, with my second stringers facing soft defenses when my studs were on bye. I have that, with the glaring exception of week 9. With Losman at GB and Simms at NO week 9, I think QB will be ok. Williamson and Glenn face SF and WAS, while Evans faces GB. In essence, I'm hoping for a strong outing from Buffalo against GB in week 9 to carry my team. Otherwise, I suspect I'll be out in Week 9.

I also have a lot of week 5 and 6 byes. Not worried: if you look at the numbers from last year, the thousands of teams getting cut in the first 5-6 weeks were putting up awful, awful numbers. I'm expecting many mediocre teams to make it past week 6, especially given the high number of studs on bye.

I really think this contest will be decided by the bottom 4 WRs on your roster. Mine are as good a guess as anyone else's. Wilford, Curry, Gabriel, etc all look great at this price.

Hmmm--had hoped to copy/paste the lineup for time's sake but can't get there....

Peyton Manning 29

Jon Kitna 12

Alex Smith 7

(48) I'm not surprised at the number of those listing Manning so far as he could carry a lot of weeks, but I seem to be a rare one who went with a couple of plays who might actually sneak in the scoring column once or twice!

Rudi Johnson 42

Willie Parker 32

Frank Gore 10

Marion Barber III 10

Brandon Jacobs 2

(96) Really like Jacobs in this format; did have TJ in here as well until the trade to Washington--I just wasn't as comfortable counting on him, though that could be wrong. Bit of a drag with the pair of week 4 byes but that should be early enough to pass.

TJ Houshmandzadeh 23

Terry Glenn 13

Keyshawn Johnson 11

Michael Clayton 9

Antonio Bryant 9

Ernest Wilford 5

Bobby Engram 4

(74) Spent most of my efforts tweaking this group, and hope I've got some who will outproduce their costs. Real problem with byes is my WR1 and RB1 both off week 5, but again--hopefully that will be early enough to survive.

Chris Cooley 12

Ben Watson 9

(21) Everybody's excited about Ben--but no love for the Saunders-coached Cooley?!!

I think the combo is worth the bucks here...

Shayne Graham 3

Jason Elam 3

(6) Seem to have gone a little heavier on PK's than most but didn't really have any other need of two points elsewhere.

NY Giants 3

Minnesota 2

(5) After accounting for the basics I looked for teams which seemed to get a few more td's off turnovers and returns here.

There's not going to be a whole lot of variance other than that.

Essentially wanted to go a little heavier on wideouts than in years previous, without breaking the bank for seven of them.

According to DD, my worst week is Week 3 (LT's bye), but that's a good thing--only have to be in the top 8000 to continue.
This is a very good point for those of you who have not done this before. If you are going to have problems with bye weeks or strong D's faced by your studs, you want this to happen early in the season. The first few weeks are lay ups. If you have bye week problems or have a couple studs get shut down in weeks 7 or 8 you're done. That killed me two years ago. That year I had DD, KJones, and Tiki and would've rolled through the rest of the season with the way those three finished (DD and Tiki in particular with PPR) but I had problems in week 8 and missed the cut by a few points.....

Here's mine:

QB - Kurt Warner - 15

QB - Jon Kitna - 12

QB - Matt Leinart - 5

Total: 32

I liked the relatively cheap combo of Warner and Leinart with Kitna having some upside in the Martz offense.

RB - Larry Johnson - 77

RB - DeShaun Foster - 28

RB - DeAngelo Williams - 11

RB - Frank Gore - 10

RB - Michael Bennett - 1

Total: 127

Probably stupid to spend so much on Larry, but I couldn't help it. Hopefully the CAR tandem is not a 50-50 committee but more like an 80-20 split until one of them (probably Foster given his history) gets hurt. Gore was cheap for his value and I liked Bennett better than any of the other $1 backs.

WR - Marvin Harrison - 43

WR - Terry Glenn - 13

WR - Isaac Bruce - 6

WR - Brandon Stokley - 2

WR - Greg Lewis - 2

WR - Peerless Price - 2

WR - Braylon Edwards - 2

Total: 70

Probably should have spent less on Larry and more here, but one of those cheap WRs ought to do something most weeks and Marvin is Mr. reliable. Glenn, like Gore, seemed cheap for his likely production.

TE - Chris Cooley - 12

TE - Eric Johnson - 1

Total: 13

Thought about going Watson instead of Cooley to save $3, but I wanted to go a different direction from the herd. Either it'll kill me or I'll look like a genius. Hopefully the latter.

PK - Jason Hanson - 1

PK - Matt Bryant - 1

Total: 2

Cheap decent kickers...

TD - New England Patriots - 3

TD - Atlanta Falcons - 3

Total:6

Cheap decent defenses...

QB - Carson Palmer - 22

QB - Philip Rivers - 10

QB - A.J. Feeley - 2

Only concern is Palmer's health. QB position should be good for 300 points per year (ppy) or 19 points per game (ppg).

RB - LaDainian Tomlinson - 71

RB - Shaun Alexander - 69

RB - Michael Turner - 5

RB - Brandon Jacobs - 2

RB - Maurice Morris - 2

Two top RBs plus their backups, with Jacobs TD vulturing to cover the diferent early BYE weeks (unless Tiki gets dinged up, that is, in which case things could be better). The early BYEs for both may also mean more weak competition still in the contest, and an easier time. Per player averages are 330ppy or 21ppg. Total for both RBs is 42 ppg.

WR - Michael Clayton - 9

WR - Mark Clayton - 6

WR - Ernest Wilford - 5

WR - Bobby Engram - 4

WR - Troy Williamson - 4

WR - Travis Taylor - 2

WR - Greg Jennings - 2

Bunch of 170-180 ppg WRs (total average production). Only concern is week 6, as four players are on BYE. Chose to go that way since top QB, TE, and both top RBs are all not on BYE that week, so the risk is lessened. 11ppg per player, or 33ppg for WRs.

TE - Todd Heap - 22

TE - Desmond Clark - 3

Top TE scoring ~190ppy or 12 ppw. Reasonable backup.

PK - Jay Feely - 2

PK - Matt Stover - 2

Kickers are mostly interchangeable. 120ppy or ~8 ppw.

TD - New England Patriots - 3

TD - Miami Dolphins - 3

Defense by committee for 120 ppy or ~8 ppw.

____________________________

TOTAL = 122 points per game

Going heavy RB was a mathematical choice. The drop of the top RBs to the middle RBs was about ~330ppy per quality RB (i.e., LT2 and SA) vs. 230ppy for lesser RB (e.g., McGahee, KJones, FWP, Portis averages), or a total of 200 points for both RBs. For WRs, having several good ones means scoring about 220-230 ppy per good WR (e.g., Housh, Ward, Mason) vs. 170-180 ppy per lesser reciever, or a total of ~150ppy for the three WRs. The WR value (150ppy) isn't as large as the RB value (200ppy). Best of luck to all!

I like this squad top to bottom. I see alot of people are taking Warner, Gore, Evans, Glenn...hopefully I picked enough "different" guys to differentiate me from the pack.

I found alot of value in the price vs. production fluctuations after the pre-season. I LOVE this group and I think I have a strong chance to compete.
