Success of number1 pick by position (1 Viewer)

Every year it seems that the talk of the draft is whether to take a QB at the number 1 pick or not?... A few bust names come to mind, more recently Tim Couch... or those that should have take their team to the promise land but have not (so far) like Peyton Manning... or even the ones that were still there in the 6th round - Tom Brady anyone?...

With that in mind, I asked myself, is taking a QB first overall such a bad thing, as many think when looking at the points above... Precisely, what's the -success rate- of the first overall pick since the beginning of the SuperBowl?

By -success rate-, I just wanted to know if a first overall pick was on the SuperBowl winning team roster... I have looked at this by position - obviously not going back to first pick that only have played before the installment of the SuperBowl (going back to SB I - before the merger) - thus starting with the 1960 draft

From all this, we get the following results (Po-SbWins-1stpick-rate)

QB-11-16-0,6875DT--3--5-0,6000OT--1--2-0,5000DE--3--7-0,4286WR--1--3-0,3333RB--1-11-0,0909LB--0--3-0,0000We can draw our own conclusions from this, particularly for those that only have played a few years... but those saying that you shouldnt draft a QB with the first overall pick are only looking at a few bad examples to try and hide the facts...The complete list:

One thing to note is that you're looking at players who won Super Bowls when you should be looking at players who won Super Bowls with the team that drafted them. So you have only two examples in your sample of successful QB picks: Terry Bradshaw and Troy Aikman. Also, I think "won a Super Bowl" is a really poor measure of success. When Keyshawn Johnson is defined as a successful pick and OJ Simpson is not, something is wrong with your measure.

Bledsoe "won" a superbowl in 01 with NE Patriots...riding the pine but still on team. The point can be made that he didn't play in the game yet he was absolutely vital in getting the Patriots there.
