SupeBowl 10 Goodell would have had a field day. (1 Viewer)

Fair & Balanced
I just watched Super Bowl 10 Pitt vs Dallas Watching the game without the replay stoppage, and all the PI calls was very entertaining. It was so different from watching the game today.

The Steel Curtain would not have lasted a day in todays NFL. LC Greenwood grabbed the tackles facemasks and slammed their heads face first while rushing the passer, Joe Greene had some wicked headslaps. The late hits were unreal compared to todays games.

Jack Lambert picked up and body slammed Cliff Harris head first into the turf after a missed FG right in front of the Refs. No ejection, no penalty. Today that would be an ejection and at least 100K. Suh is an angel compared to the stuff that was going on.

The Dallas OL would jam hands to the face almost every play. PI calls?? Unless a player tackled the WR when the ball was in the air forget it.

What was so refreshing to watch was that the WRS were never crying for calls, no DL ever complained about holding to the refs. There was very little whining and complaining from the players or coaches. They just played physical football. It was fun to watch. They did not have 10 people on the sidelines crying for a call every play.

In that game alone there would have been at least 4-5 fines and a couple of suspensions from Goodell in todays game.

After watching that game now I want to watch all the SuperBowls from 10 to now to see the changes in the game.

You missed the good ones. ALL of the Raider/Steeler games were a war.

Typically the Steelers had just got done with one of these type of games against Oakland.

The reason there was no complaining is because it never got called. Guys today whine because there's a better than 50/50 shot at getting a flag on the next play.

The "no calls" blew me away The players just got up and went back to the huddle.

I enjoyed the NFL much more back in the 70s. Big hits, no whining, no IR reviews that take forever and still often don't get it right. But I am a dinosaur and there is no turning back now.

BTW- Cliff Harris deserved to be slammed to the ground on that play. You don't tap the helmet of a kicker that just missed a FG. The doosh got what was coming to him.

Those were the days. (all in the family theme music playing)

I miss the game of the 1970's. All the big hits and enforcement that the refs allowed letting the players police themselves. There were no weak sisters in the game or on the sidelines crying foul on every play. Now, there are dozens of them on the sidelines and on the field making complete #######s of themselves.

That may be so, But today Lambert would have been called for a personal foul, ejected, fined and suspended by Goodell.

Yeah, but aren't these the guys who are now complaining about concussions, thus causing the NFL to increase safety?

Agreed, Supposedly the referee warned Lambert that he was going to be ejected if he kept up that behavior and Lambert told him this is the Super Bowl, you aren't ejecting anyone.

Definitely would not fly in Goodell's NFL.

Goodell isn't the guy changing the NFL. He's not creating policy. He's enforcing the rules the leagues' members have created.

The league members want their QB to survive the season, and not to get sued by families after a player descends into depression and suicide, or dies at the age of 50 from a heart attack, like Mike Webster, one of the glorious warriors playing in Super Bowl X.

I don't need to see players kill themselves, literally, for my amusement. I don't need linebackers that outweigh Lambert by 35 pounds (and run faster than he ever dreamed) getting a free shot on quarterbacks, just so I can call a QB tough. I don't need to see cheap shots.

Everyone remembers Lambert's quote, about putting dresses on QBs. Well, if he was saying that 35 years ago, does that mean the good old days were actually the 1950's, when no one was watching? Leather helmet days?

It is actually a good point. Take MMA for instance. Before UFC and the half dozen other leagues, it was lawless no holds barred competitions. It didn't becone truly popular until they regulated harder and enforced some basic rules for safety. Now its pretty much eclipsed boxing in every way.Progress will always have its naysayers pining for the good old days but those days weren't all good.

:goodposting: :lmao: Pretty dopey thread.

I tried to start a thread earlier about the NFLN showing all the SB highlights consecutively on a non-football weekend (no the Pro Bowl is not football)... so glad to see someone talking about the games.

Anyway, in one of the Steelers Super Bowls, No. X vs the Cowboys I think,Terry Bradshaw got knocked out with a concussion - a Cowboys defensive lineman actually hauled off and punched Bradshaw right in (or under) the facemask (no flag by the looks of it). Hanratty was in there for a bit. Bradshaw came back in the game.

Bradshaw did throw a nice ball, very tight spiral. I never watched the old replays but now am looking forward to watching only because the game has changed so much the last 3-4 years.
