Sorry for the numerous poll choices, but I wanted to see what the SP thought about rooting interest in the game. Is it automatically assumed that Steelers, Jets, Dolphins fans would automatically root for the Seahawks? Or that 49ers, Packers or Cowboys fans would automatically root for the Patriots? This could also be a measure of how polarizing each team and their fanbase is with the rest of the league.

I would say automatically that:

Patriots rivals: rest of AFC east, Steelers, Colts and Broncos

Seahawks rivals: rest of NFC west, Packers, Cowboys

If you feel differently, vote your feelings.

Seems like the "Fan of AFC or NFC non-rival and rooting for Seahawks" may be a little skewed as there are more rivals of the patriots then of the seahawks. I'd most definitely put Baltimore fans higher up in the patriot rival list then pitt and denver.

I would like to see both teams lose. I have not yet figured out a scenario for that, but I remain hopeful.
Sum of all Fears type Super Bowl
That might be too extreme for me to hope. Perhaps a Seahawk could swoop down and steal each thrown or kicked ball, returning to a nest in the rafters, where it tries to feed each one to its young. After several repetitions a government employee could show up with a writ to close things down as the game is illegally interfering with a nesting protected species.

Speaking for some Steeler fans I know, Patriot hate is up there after all this time. Kinda like the Raider hate in the 70s.

I vote "don't care who wins as long as it's close/exciting at the end".

Bonus points for some sort of huge controversy. Would love for something to happen that causes the talking heads to keep football on the front burner long after the game is over.

51-34 (3:2) for the Seahawks is surprising to me.
Not really. Most people don't have a vested interest in the seahawks (or never did until the last few years). The Pats have beaten a lot of big market east coast teams over the last 10 years. They have many more 'rivals" or people who dislike them, or have been beaten by them. Would think more people would be cheering for the hawks for sure.

I'd say it's not who the Pats have beaten, but all the ways they make themselves unlikeable... surly coach, pretty boy QB, cheating allegations, thug TE etc.

IMO those things breed more hatred than their success.

Oh god, not this again. And I don't see how 'pretty boy qb' causes a person to hate the pats. Hernandez was cut as soon as these things happened, and they have a relatively low number of off the field issues in NE. "allegations" is the key word there too.

I think it's common nature to hate a team that beats you, especially in the playoffs, so I think there's a lot of Baltimore, Indy, Denver, Pitt, etc fans who dislike the pats no matter what they do.

I expect a lot more then half of the people to be cheering for seattle. Although, them being bandwagon-central, a lippy CB, arrogant RB may even things out a bit. Also this scandal has moved some people over into NE's corner too. Think it should be pretty even in the stadium.

I'm rooting for a measles outbreak.....in lieu of that, I have to go with the Seahawks. Don't like the cheating ways of the Patriots.

Hold on just a second. The only time NE had ever beaten the Broncos in the playoffs is when Broncos had a FB playing QB.

I said "especially" in the playoffs. The Pats have had their way with Denver in the regular season lately.

I hold no ill will over road regular season losses. Pats beat Broncos in Denver in 2011 (again when Broncos had a FB playing QB), but outside of that, it goes back to what...2003 for a home loss to NE?I remember a time when the Broncos absolutely owned the Pats. I remember Shannon Sharpe calling the President because Broncos were killing NE.

In my formative years watching football, Broncos beat Patriots 11 straight times, and since Brady came into the league, the two teams are 7-7.

Broncos caught Bradys first 4 interceptions, and handed Brady his first (and most recent) playoff loss.

The only animosity I have towards NE is spawning Josh McDaniels, and then rehiring that little ####. #### him.

The Belicheck/Brady teams have garnered far more animosity and than teams like the Manning/Dungy Colts or the Montana/Walsh and Young/Seifert 49ers. The Patriots backlash is not just a byproduct of success/beating a bunch of rivals. It is largely a function of all the other factors I mentioned.

No I think its mostly that they have been together for like 15 years and are the winningest team ever.

I think its 100% that.

The persecution complex you guys have is staggering.
Getting to the biggest game and then getting dragged through glass over nothing will do that.
So will zero trophies in a decade on the heels of seeing the entire country dismiss your previous ones as fraudulent, while simultaneously trying to convince yourselves you've been "the most successful team in football" during that run of failure.

As for the poll, I'm just rooting for a good game, no serious injuries, and funny commercials.

Is there some other metric you use to measure for the winningest team in football?

Wins excluding NE?

The ESPN SportsNation poll is a lot more insightful.

http://espn.go.com/espn/fp/flashPollResultsState?sportIndex=frontpage&pollId=4681910

Basically, every state in the nation is rooting for the Seahawks except for the New England states and a few states with allegiance to an NFC rival (Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, Louisiana)
Before Tuesday last week every state except for Washington thought NE would win.

Now you are aware of how dumb polls are.
I'm afraid you are mistaken. Polls are not dumb. Once you hit a statistically significant sample size the results are highly accurate.
You are now aware that a non-zero while still less than a billionth of a percent of polls actually reach that sample size.

These two fanbases are captivating to me.

Seattle's is full of knobs, but they're the defending champs, and nobody can take that away from them. And what's more, everybody seems to fully believe they earned and deserve that title.

The Patsy fanbase wants to puff and posture, but all you have to do is visit any topic where the Giants, Ravens, Steelers, etc. come up, and the same guys who want to go on and on about how magnificent and unprecedented the Brady/Belichick era success is positively reek of envy.

NE fans are really desperate for this one. They need to stop the bleeding as this is quickly becoming a Peyton Manning-esque run of disappointed expectations. :(

FWIW, I think NE wins pretty easily. The matchup problems were probably too much for SEA to overcome even if their two best players were healthy.

This isn't a poll. It's a self-selective survey. There is no "margin of error" - it's not a random sample.

Panthers fan. I hate both teams, so I really don't care who wins. For the Seahawks, I have more dislike for their fanbase over the team itself (I actually like most players on the team), so I'd probably lean that way if forced to choose.

Weren't the Seahawks in the AFCW for over 20 years?

Yeah, but they were never any good, and were johnny-come-latelys anyhow. Broncos, Chargers, raiders, & Chiefs were in the same division since 1960, Seattle didn't join in until the late 70's and weren't all that good while they were there. There was some rivalry developing when Boz was running around, but it died down pretty quickly.

The Bucs have existed as long as SEA has. SEA started for one season in the NFCW before moving to the AFCW division one year later. TAM started in the AFCW for one season before moving to the NFCC division one year later. Both after 1976, to 1977.

In 2001, SEA moved to the NFCW. In 2002, TAM moved to the NFCS. Whatever division rivalries they have now have only existed in less than 15 seasons. That's less than a generation.

Oh, yeah, of course that would be the ideal scenario. I mean, #1 I'm rooting for a meteor. #2, a 2-2 tie that goes 11 hours of boring futility until the game has to be called for logistical and/or humanitarian reasons. But #3 is definitely some sort of convoluted controversy that tarnishes the winner. Hopefully both teams. Maybe cheating on an epic scale is uncovered. Maybe Belichick falls out of an A/C vent trying to spy on the Seahawks locker room during halftime. Maybe both teams start intentionally hurting opposing players to the point where they can't field 11 guys on a side. Pete Carroll indebted to the mob and intentionally throws the game and it's discovered Monday morning. Something that makes this the biggest asterisk since Roger Maris on the title. That has the talking heads saying "let the Colts play the Packers next week as a do-over". That would be awesome.
Why would anyone want a huge controvery/scandal like that?

I'm a football fan, and a fantasy football freak....I wouldn't want to see my favorite game tarnished like that no matter who was in the Super Bowl.

I'm a Cowboys fan but I would like to see the Seahawks take the Pats down. Over the years I generally go with NFC loyalty over anything else, and I also like the 'Hawks secondary and wish the 'Boys could find a Darren Woodson again in the draft...(sigh)

For what it's worth, I'm here in Vegas where we come every year during the Super Bowl, and it is 10-1 Seahawks fans wearing their team's colors.

I think they're the young and hip thing and there may be some fatigue on the Patriots.

This. Belichik cheater. Carroll cheater (especially at USC)

Although I got a case o beer ridin on the chickens. And I'll do some prop bets to make it interesting.

Yes, I think Hawk fans would trend younger. Wilson is young & "well spoken" + Lynch/Sherman bring out the bad boy fans.

It really is impossible to root for either team. Lynch and Sherman are completely unlikable. Belichek is a cheater and Brady is a whiner.

Frankly, I am hoping the game ends 3-0 and really don't care who wins.

My only other choice was both teams getting stranded at an airport and unable to be flown in for the game and two local Pop Warner teams step in to take their place.
