ARI-MIA - Tony Sparano and Ken Whisenhunt were on the Cleveland Browns coaching staff together in 1999.

ARI-BAL - Can't think of anything.

ARI-IND - Peyton Manning and Kurt Warner have both been Super Bowl MVPs and NFL MVPs.

ARI-SDG - Battle of the southwest.

ARI-TEN - DE Kyle Vanden Bosch was originally a Cardinals second-round draft and did very little for Arizona. After 3 years he became a Titan and posted seasons of 12.5, 6.5, and 12 sacks. Had 4.5 in limited action this year.

PHI-MIA - Pennington and McNabb probably both reached the nadir of their careers in 2008. Pennington traded and McNabb benched. Yet both turned their fortunes around and are in the super bowl.

PHI-IND - Both Tony Dungy and Andy Reid share personal family tragedies involving sons. Dungy's 18-year old son committed suicide. Reid took a 5 month leave of absence to deal with his 23 year old son who was on heroin and his 21 year old son who was dealing with drug and weapons charges.

PHI-SDG - Eagles OT John Runyan was majority owner of the AFL2 San Diego Riptide football team. The team ceased play after 2005.

PHI-TEN - In their last meeting in 2006, McNabb tore his ACL and was done for the year. The Titans would win the game, which was Jeff Fisher's 100th career victory. The Titans (excluding the Oilers years) have never lost to the Eagles (3-0).

ATL-IND - Matt Ryan and Peyton Manning are the only QBs in NFL history to throw for 3000 yards as a rookie.

ATL-MIA - Worst-to-first - The Falcons were 4-12 and in last place last year, while the Dolphins were 1-15 and in last place a year ago. Now both have won their conference.

ATL-PIT - Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey was once the Steelers OC.

ATL-TEN - Bill "White Shoes" Johnson was a 15th round draft pick for the Oilers in 1974. He holds several Oilers/Titans team records for punt returns. He currently is the Falcons strength and conditioning coach.

MIN-BAL - The Purple bowl.

MIN-IND - Tony Dungy served as Vikings DC from 1992-1995 before being hired as the Buccaneers head coach. Brad Childress' first NFL job was with the Colts as QB/quality control coach in 1985.

MIN-SDG - I have no idea what to say here, there is no connection.

MIN-TEN - Can't think of one.

CAR-BAL - Panthers owner Jerry Richardson was a flanker/halfback for the Baltimore Colts from 1959-60. He caught the winning touchdown pass in the 1959 NFL title game for Baltimore over the Giants in a rematch of the 1958 NFL title game known as "the Greatest Game Ever Played".

CAR-IND - Panthers owner Jerry Richardson was a flanker/halfback for the Colts from 1959-60. Peyton Manning and Jake Delhomme were both born in Louisiana. While Peyton's last name is Manning, Jake's last name actually translates into "the man".

CAR-SDG - Philip Rivers played at North Carolina State. Panthers General Manager Marty Hurney was the coordinator of football operations for the Chargers from 1990-97. John Fox grew up in San Diego. He attended Castle Park High School in San Diego and went to San Diego State. Fox was later an assistant coach at San Diego State and then an assistant coach with the Chargers from 92-93.

CAR-MIA - I can't think of a connection.

CAR-PIT - Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher moved to North Carolina and is always rumored to take John Fox's job. John Fox was a coach with the Steelers from 1989-91. Steelers Jeff Reed and Willie Parker grew up in North Carolina and went to college at North Carolina.

NYG-MIA - Bill Parcells.

I was actually worried someone might get that confused, which is why I spelled out "won their conference" as in "first in their conference due to winning the conference title game".

not really a story line like the ones listed in this thread, but i have already began to picture in my mind a media overload about how McNabb was benched and how he has now lead his team to the superbowl

The bigger storyline might be "is this Philadelphia's year?" as the Phillies won the last world series and, in your scenario, the Eagles on the verge of winning the Lombardi in a span of less than 4 months. I don't think a super bowl team ever benched its QB only to have him return to lead them to a super bowl win. The 2000 Ravens started the season with Tony Banks at QB and benched him for Dilfer, but that was a case of Dilfer simply moving up the depth chart. Dilfer never got demoted.

Easy, Tiger. It was for a half. I'm sure saving your QB from a pounding at the hands of the Ravens D isn't as dramatic as making him sit out an entire game or 2.

Al Davis & the Raiders are media whores during the Super Bowl festivities. Any chance he brings in Shanny for an interview during Super Bowl week?

While the Manning vs. Manning scenario would be interesting and entertaining to watch, I'm afraid I would find it far too difficult to stomach all of the media hype leading up to it. Especially for two weeks. UGH!!

Here you go: Chuck Amato, Rivers' NC State head coach, was born in Easton, Pennsylvania; Eagles country. How could that not be the big story line here.

AZ vs SDLowest Rated Superbowl Ever
NYG vs PITT is what the dream matchup would be for viewers and advertisers.I hope Pitt wins today cause the Pitt vs Balt games are so good there should be 3 of them a year. That's real football.I think whoever wins the NFC game today is in the superbowl but it kind of would be cool if Philly won and the NFC championhip game was out in Arizona next weekend.

AZ vs SDLowest Rated Superbowl Ever
Eh, maybe. But for me personally, I would love to see it. I'm a big LT fan, and would love tosee him finally get a shot at the Super Bowl. Would love to see him win one before he retires. He reminds me so much of Barry Sanders, who retired early, and never even came close tosniffing the Super Bowl, and I always felt bad for him. I don't want LT to suffer the same fate.Well, at least LT has sniffed the Super Bowl...On the AZ side -- it'd be nice to see Fitz and Boldin get a shot. This team as a whole hasreally stepped it up these past two games and proved a LOT of people (myself included) wrong. Many felt they'd get bounced in the first game, but did what they needed to to beat the Falcons. Then, despite being 10 point underdogs, spanked the Panthers AT Carolina. The supposedcrappy NFC West just stomped two glorified NFC South teams.Who's next? Philly or NY? Which actually brings up another reason I'd like to see AZ -- I'm kindof suffering from "same team fatigue." It seems the same teams are always in the playoffs the lastseveral years, with a few teams here and there subbing in and out. But NY, Indy, etc. seem to alwaysbe in it. I wouldn't mind seeing fresh, new teams in the Super Bowl...

Good points but...1) LT probably wont even play2) There are no compelling stories to such a SuperBowl. Arizona doesnt care about the Cardinals.. if they dont certainly American won't. San Diego also doesnt get America juiced. California doesnt have big football markets... The entire East Coast will not care about the Suiperbowl. Bruce at halftime may get better ratings in NY/NJ than the game itself.3) If an 8-8 team makes the Super Bowl, it will cheapen it and make some fans pissed and tune out. It will be seen as a fluke like how the St. Louis Carids WS win was a few years ago... Doesnt lessen the thrill for SD fans but for fotball fans to see an 8-8 team make the game when the Pats at 11-5 didnt make the playoffs will piss off many,

Focus on old QB versus young QB - you can book that one at this point. QB focus will be overcoming:

Old:

age & being released

benching and hostile home fans

Young:

motorcycle injury & other injuries

being a rookie

The Steagles!!

The "Steagles" is the popular nickname for the team created by the temporary merger of two National Football League (NFL) teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles, during the 1943 season. The teams were forced to merge because both had lost many players to military service due to World War II.

Officially the team was known simply as the Eagles (without a city designation), the Eagles-Steelers, or the Steelers-Eagles. (The NFL never registered "Steagles" as a trademark.) However, the official NFL record book refers to the team as "Phil-Pitt."

Harbaugh once being the PHI DB coach is the best we could come up with? How about the Ravens trashing the Eagles 36-7 earlier in the season leading to McNabb getting benched for the first time in his career, and everyone saying maybe it was time Philly parted ways with McNabb, Reid, or both...

...oh, and then the Eagles rebounded to go 6-1 and make the playoffs in incredible fashion?

I'm pretty sure this is the story everyone is going to be talking about if we see a PHI/BAL Superbowl.

Oh, and FWIW, the Eagles have played all of the remaining teams left this year.

PIT 15-6 Win

BAL 36-7 Loss

ARI 48-20 Win

Don't forget Card-Pitt (aka The Car-Pitts or Carpets) which was the one season merger between the Cardinals and Steelers in 1944.Card-Pitt

This team wasn't as successful as the Steagles as they went 0-10.

So if the Steelers make the Super Bowl this year, one way or the the other they'll be facing a former siamese twin!
