(KFFL) The Associated Press reports an estimated 90.7 million people watched Super Bowl XL. It was the largest Super Bowl audience since 1996, when the Pittsburgh Steelers last played in the title game. Super Bowl XL had 5 percent more watching than the 86.1 million people who watched Super Bowl XXXIX last year, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research.

Interesting.....

It is interesting that the top two rated Super Bowls from 1996-2006 were both Steeler Super Bowls......

So much for people not tuning in for this game......

The Steelers have a giant national fan base - I have been saying it's even larger than Packer Nation for a while now, and these numbers bear that out.

Too bad for the NFL the game was such a train wreck on so many levels. They had the audience, but the product didn't come through. :X

Someone should wake Skip Bayless and tell him how many people watched.

Next year will be the lowest in 10 years because of the Steelers of XL. Honestly Dallas Pitt in 1996 was a cooler matchup. It probably had more to do with Dallas

Bayless was mainly attacking the Seahawks before the game.
Bayless wrote an article suggesting nobody outside of Seattle or Pittsburgh would have an interest in this game. He was dead wrong.

What was the Nielsen share exactly? I thought of taking the over on 42.
I heard this SB was second only to the MASH finale. Seriously, MASH = overrated. I just don't get it.

Bayless is awful. My message board writing is more professional.

Yeah, that explains why the 9 Super Bowls in between all had lower ratings than that one and this one. It's not like there were teams with large fan bases or from major markets in there like the Giants, Eagles, Packers, Raiders, etc...Next year might be the lowest in 10 years if the Steelers aren't in it, but if they are, it will be higher-rated than any Super Bowl between XXX and XL.

I'm sure he did. But, he really focused his ire on Seattle more than Pittsburgh before the game.Oh - his final score prediction: Steelers 24, Seahawks 14. I'd say he got that one pretty close to right.

BTW, I hate Bayless - but I'm trying to be fair about criticisms in general.

Since "fan" is short for "fanatic", I think it's safe to say that the Steelers have the best fans of any pro franchise. I'm watching the coverage of the parade about to start and these people truly are fanatic.

That Dallas team was one of the most popular in NFL history.

Yes, and the Steelers are perhaps the biggest TV draw in the NFL. No surprise that this game was the highest rated since the Dallas/Pittsburgh game.

correct, regarding MASH final--still most viewed TV show...periodMASH=the bomb...seen 'em all, a couple times over
