Super Bowls decided by field goals (1 Viewer)

Clipped from an article on how Jeff Reed is prepared to win it for the Steelers:

It has happened a lot recently in the Super Bowl, thanks to New England's Vinatieri. His 48-yard field goal on the last play of Super Bowl XXXVI beat St. Louis, 20-17. Two years later he won another with a 41-yard field goal with four seconds left against Carolina, 32-29. Last year, Vinatieri's 22-yard field goal with 8:40 left provided the winning points, 24-21, when the Eagles scored a touchdown with 1:48 left.Scott Norwood's 47-yard attempt with four seconds left sailed wide right to preserve the Giants' 20-19 victory against the Bills in 1991. Ray Wershing's two fourth-quarter field goals were the winning points in the 49ers' 26-21 victory against the Bengals in 1982. Jim O'Brien's 32-yard field goal with five seconds left gave the Colts a 16-13 victory against the Cowboys in 1971. Jim Turner's three second-half field goals were the difference in the Jets' 16-7 victory against the Colts in 1969.

I think a lot of it has to do with the parity in the league. There have been other close Super Bowls in recent times as well, the St. Louis-Tennessee game comes to mind and the 2nd 49ers-Bengals.

Particularly the parity at the top... with the cap, you just can't get that much better than everyone else. You can stay at the top, as we've seen with the Pats and Eagles, but you won't see teams like the 85 Bears that just waltz thru the playoffs anymore.

What about the '02 Bucs? The way they kicked the asses of all three of their playoff opponents could be construed as waltzing through the playoffs.

The Bears were great, but it doesn't hurt your chances when the opposing QBs are Dieter Brock (NFC Championship) and Tony Eason (Super Bowl).
