This is an expansion on the DC vs. Marvel poll. The results of that poll were overwhelming. I tried to list the most popular here.

Actually, underrated because he's from the old old days but I'd love to see The Shadow return. Good bit of The Shadow character was used for Batman actually.

Fantastic Four should have been a choice.

Still would have voted for the Avengers though. They're like the jazz ensemble superhero group. Heroes come in and out. Some are featured while others play in the background waiting their turn. Et cetera.

Batman

Avengers

DOOM.

From my childhood, I'd have to go Superman, Fantastic Four, The Joker. Can't go wrong with Spiderman or Batman either.

Joker is the best Villain ever. Everyone else is competing for second.
His problem is that he rarely lives up to his awesome potential. There are very few examples of a great Joker IMO: The second Dark Knight movie, Alan Moore's The Killing Joke. Most Joker stories are, for me, disappointing.

The scariest Joker ever is in Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns- (which, not coincidentally, is considered by many people to be the greatest comic superhero story ever.) Set in a future in which an old Batman comes out of retirement, the Joker dresses like David Bowie and kills hundreds- at one point he goes to an amusement park filled with young boy scouts and gives them all poison cotton candy. As Batman and a girl Robin come onto the scene by helicopter, they are confronted by the sight of dead children lying everywhere.

"I'm the best there is at what I do, but what I do best isn't very nice." - first line from the original Wolverine miniseries.

He wasn't a cartoonish good guy with a bad streak. He wasn't immune to all pain and he didn't heal instantly like in the movies. He was badly hurt in a regular swordfight, and almost died when they used a poison tipped sword against him. Not some special anti-mutant poison, either. His adamantium skeleton actually mattered because he could be hurt.

I love that he's a main character in the newer X-Men movies and I think Hugh Jackman does an awesome job with the role, but the original was a more flawed and therefore much more interesting character.

Not gonna lie, I prefer the post 90s Wolverine. I love his bitter relationship with death now, whenever hes dispatched but before he recovers hes in some sort of purgatory where he sees all the people he ever loved, but they always tell him it isn't his time yet then he comes to.
