Surprise 1st Round Picks (1 Viewer)

Generally there are a few players who end up being 1st round selections despite being projected much lower by "experts". Last year the Jaguars shocked everyone by drafting Tyson Alualu at #10. Later on in the 1st, the Broncos surprised people similarly by trading multiple picks to get Tebow at 25. Who do you think it could be this year?

I'll start with:

Randall Cobb WR Kentucky - I think he'll be the 3rd WR selected in the draft. On receiving ability alone he's one of the top 5 in the class, but he provides value to the return game and to a team with some creativity. I believe some team will fall in love with his ability to contribute all over the field and select him late in the 1st or very early in 2nd. He very well could be taken between 24 and 29 with the Saints, Seahawks, Ravens, Falcons, Patriots and Bears all needing another receiver.

Not sure how surprising this would be, but the one pick i am most sure of in this draft is the Patriots selecting Mark Ingram with the 16th pick. Actually, i wouldnt be surprised if they traded up in front of Miami to get him. Either way, the Pats will get Ingram, and they wont wait until the 2nd to get him.

In desperate need of a pass rusher, the Buffalo Bills attempt to draft Bruce Smith, DE, Virgina Tech for every pick the first day.

That night, Roger Goddell enacts emergency powers to strip Ralph Wilson of his drafting powers.

A week later Mr. Wilson is committed to a Buffalo area sanitarium.

:lmao: Poor Ralph...he had a good run

Kaep is my best guess. Athletic measurables are as good as it gets and I would put his arm up with anyone. Not sure how he doesn't end up going in the 1st

I think Rudolph makes it in to the first. I would just be really surprised if not one Team doesn't draft a TE in the first the way they are being used right now.

I also think Ryan Williams could sneak in to the late first.

All the hype around Christian Ponder going in the first has me scratching my head.
I have to admit, Ponder to Minnesota intrigues me, but I think #12 is too high. That said, I would not be disappointed at all if they traded back into the low to mid 20s and took him there.

Dont know if he makes it into the 1st, but my reading on Colin Kaepernick is surprising. Measurables remind me of Peyton, but his tape makes it hard to know how well he will perform in a NFL offense.

Are you serious? :lmao: He is closer to Charlie Whithurst than Peyton Manning. There is nothing Kaepernick does that reminds me of Peyton Manning. I would be interested in hearing what exactly matches up to Manning. Its Tuesday and I need a laugh.

Kinda weird to post this now when it's clear that Wilson is one of the only owners in the league over the past 5 years that it turns out has any clue what's best for the league. The only reason he gets a bad rap is because the Bills have been terrible over the last decade. That was more from him giving Tom Donahoe too much time as GM more than anything. He's been willing to spend more money than he gets credit for and has a better idea of how to be a good owner to his players, fans and the league as a whole than the vast majority of owners.

Honestly, I think he gets lumped in with Al Davis due to his age and recent lack of success. With that said, I would not call him a "bad" owner. I see him as unlucky. He has to recruit players into a town that is small and cold (yes, I realize GB fits that description to a "T"), while they have not been good in ages, over the last decade, they have been hovering around that 6-9 win plateau (while playing the Pats twice a year). They had a 3 win season in 2001 and last year, although they only won 4 games, they went to OT three times (two of which were against the Steelers and Ravens). Put yourself in an FA's shoes; if you wanted to play in the AFC East, would you go to NY, Boston, Miami...or Buffalo. If they eventually lose the team to Toronto or LA, it will not be because of Wilson...without him, they would have been gone long ago.

I have to admit - I am as curious as anyone as to how the future of some of these "Top Rookies" will turn out. I am a die hard Panthers fan and I am praying to the Football Gods that all this Cam Newton talk is for trade down purposes only. I don't like Newton as an NFL passer and feel we have entirely too many needs to think anyone with the #1 pick is worthy. Would love to see my Panthers drop back - maybe get Franco, or with some luck, AJ Green. We could use some defensive help as well since Peppers is gone. I am liking our chances of drafting high again next year too, so maybe Luck will be our QB solution. I can't help but to think that if Carolina drafts well this year & can manage to land Luck next year, we will be back into contention again.

I think that the surprise of the first round will be the number of QBs that are taken. When Luck announced that he was staying at Stanford, the outcry was thar the only real prospect just eliminated the QB position from consideration.

I think that the combination of the number of teams that need a QB and the uncertainty and delayed FA period will generate a greater number of QBs being selected highly. I think that Newton and Gabbert are guarantees and it would not surprise me to see Ponder, Kaepernick (sp), Locker, and even Mallett joining them.

My other one is that no RBs are taken in the first.

If Rick Gosselin is right (mock #2), Ellis in the first will be a surprise. First I've heard of that.
