Survivor leagues (1 Viewer)

The Seahawks are going to be a truly terrible team this year. I'd take the Niners.
Niners are a good choice this week and like many here, I try to stick to the rules of avoiding divisional games and road teams with my picks. But there end up being times where you need to go against one and sometimes both of those rules. And while it's too early to be definitive, if you find a week where matchups are difficult, SF could be a candidate to go against both rules three different times @ SEA, STL, and ARI. I'm holding off and going with NYG. They will never be a team where you want to select them in a divisional game which significantly reduces their usefulness.

Has champ ever lost the home opener since this format?
No.However, taking the Saints means you're betting against Brett Favre in a prime-time game, which historically has not been a smart move.
Actually, the prime time Brett Favre thing is just a popular myth. Last season for a big money picks league, I looked up his prime time performances (ATS, granted) and they weren't that impressive. What sticks with people are a handful of dramatic prime time games, but his prime time oeuvre isn't that much different than his daytime one.
His what? :goodposting:
It's a French word (hope it's spelled right) that basically means "overall body of work", usually referring to someone's lifelong work. Given Favre's age and number of years in the league, I thought it an apposite word choice. ;)

Rules of Thumb:

-only play home teams

-avoid divisional matchups

-avoid prime time games

Applying those, Tennessee (vs. OAK) and NYG (vs. CAR) are the two plays that stand out. Vegas would concur. I need to look at the rest of the schedule to see who to choose b/w these two.
:loco: my rule of thumb is to try to pick the loser instead of the winner (i.e. in past years always pick Detroit, StL or oakland's opponent) , but that's really hard to do this week.

I'm thinking about Saints b/c Favre hasn't had a chance to gel with his receivers, and the Saints will thrive with the home crowd...the Superdome will be rockin' tomorrow for sure. I'm considering NYG and TEN, but I'm nervous about both of those. NYG is probably a safer play than TEN, IMO.
glad I went with NO here.

There is a stat out there which will need to be looked up. However, it is something similar to Oakland not winning a game in the eastern time zone with a 1 oclock start in nearly 10 years IRRC.
What's the difference between winning a 1:00pm Eastern start on the road in the Central time zone or the Eastern time zone?Because they beat the Chiefs in Kansas City in a 1 o'clock game just last season. (Nashville is also on Central time.)They also beat Pittsburgh in a 1 o'clock game at Heinz Field... or you are you just making reference to a previous trend that has since been broken?Incidentally, the Packers haven't won a game in Philly in close to 50 years.

Picking anything other than the Bears, Titans, or Giants is throwing money away. Pick the one you think the least ppl in your group will choose (this is the secret to survivor leagues that most people can't or won't understand).

Sorry, thought Nashville was EST.There is historical data (maybe ATS though) that shows Oakland is horrendous EST 1pm games. Evidenally they do not travel well.

Whew, had to sweat out the Saints last night.

Matchups are really tough to call this week. I think the Niners at Seattle is a safe play but it violates the road team and division opponent strategies, so who knows. Good luck.

I stuck to my guns and went with Miami. There won't be too many opps to use them IMO and it makes sense in a brutal opening week of survivor.

Doesn't mean I'm not nervous as all helsinki. :hophead:

I don't mind throwing the "divisional opponent and road matchup" out the window this week due to the lack of slam dunk picks.

In one league, I picked Miami, and in the other, I went with Arizona. Of the two I like Miami better, but I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket.

Buffalo has no answer to stop the run, not to mention they will have their hands full with Brandon Marshall. Other than CJ Spiller, absolutely nobody on the Bills offense worries me.

As far as the Rams, they're just awful. One win last year? Two the year before? (I forget exactly but it was low) Rookie QB in his first start? The Cardinals will be fine handing it off to Hightower and even Anderson will be able to have decent success throwing to a stacked WR core of Fitzgerald, Breaston, and Doucet.

So for me, Dolphins and Cardinals are 1A and 1B for survivor this week.

 :whewie: This truly was a survival.

I messed up twice in this post...one, for some reason I thought the Niners were hosting. And two...well, you know why.
