Survivor Season 48 - And The Oscar Goes To... (3 Viewers)

Happy the best player won. Sol is my favorite. I looked forward to his outfits every tribal. :lmao: He did not disappoint last night. Teeny just doubling down. and someone get Jeff some champagne!

I thought Sam had the best final tribal anyone has ever had. I just don't get it.
Going into final tribal I thought for sure Rachael but after the questions and final thoughts Sam convinced me he had a chance.

Sue really thought she was fooling people about her age?? 😂

Ther were probably shocked she was only 59. Looked and acted 69. As usual in the finals it ends up a two person choice. I thought Sam would get maybe 2-3 with Rachel getting the rest. The coat tail riders get no votes. In fact Sue only got 1 vote against her the whose season proving that no player viewed her as any threat. Those types are always carried.

It was obvious halfway through the final tribal nobody was asking Sue anything that she would not get a vote.

I thought it was pretty obvious in the montage before the final jury where the jury members were talking about the remaining players games and why they should win, and the best they could come up with for Sue was "She played a loyal game. And that's a choice, I guess."

Most female Sole Survivors have won almost entirely because of their social game or because they were the head of a dominant alliance. Rachel is one of the few who had to play a flashy game with idols/advantages and immunity wins in order to pull it off. She may be the closest thing we have to a female Mike Holloway — but her social game was better.

I would have been fine with a Sam win because Operation Italy was the defining moment of the season and he was one of the drivers of it.

Sue, lol. I’m all for casting more older players, but let’s do more Janet Carbin and less Sue, ok?

This was the best of the odd-numbered seasons in the new era. I’d probably have it behind all the even-numbered new era seasons, though.

Yeah I thought Sam made the best possible argument (based on what he did) to win. Thought it would be much closer and I actually thought he had a chance to win 5-4. Figured he could get votes from Kyle, Andy and the blond he was buddies with and had an outside shot of flipping 1 or 2 more.

Rachel was obviously a deserving winner but it's true that she never really controlled any votes. And Sol gifting her the safety without power advantage when she was basically dead to rights was a huge break (and honestly a little bit sketchy from the producers)

Edit....forgot there were only 8 jury members. Probably impossible for Sam to win regardless. He wasn't gonna get a 5-3 split and sue obviously would have gone for rachel if the tie break was needed

Lol at Sue...and the "reactions" when she announced her "real age" (which I still don't believe. She's in her 60's for sure.

Sue might be in her 60s where she lives, but in Fiji she's much younger.
She did say at Final TC that today was her birthday back home. Guess what Sue? Today is your birthday wherever you are!

Well idk where Fiji is exactly (beyond generally Pacific) but with the international date line...I've been in NZ on Christmas and arrived home on Christmas Eve before!

So day 25 could be your birthday in Fiji but day 26 it's actually that day in the U.S.

The only people I knew would never vote Sam over Rachel were Caroline and Teeny. I wound not have been surprised by any result ranging from 6-2 Sam to 8-0 Rachel. I would guess that the jury decided well beforehand that Rachel would win if she got to the end. Unlike in 46 where a bunch of them changed their minds at FTC. But that’s OK, each jury is different and it would be boring if they were all the same.

Yeah I think Sam did a good job at FTC but not excellent. Maaaaaaybe an excellent would swing it but I think it was Rachel's game all the way. She really did a poor job but just had dominated the game too much.

Survivor-adjacent…just saw that the President-Elect has named Mark Burnett as special envoy to the UK.

(low key wouldn't mind him naming Probst to some position like Ambassador to the Maldives and then CBS brings in the Survivor Australia crew to run the US version for a few year)

How I imagined post-series talkshow interviews went:

So_____, seems we have a lot to talk about. My notes say:

To Rachel: Wow, where to begin? Surviving the 4 on 1 tribal thanks to Sol? Like fries much? Army crawling at o'dark thirty with a camera person next to ya has gotta be adrenaline pumping, eh? So, how was your funeral? Only tied the record for female challenge beasts, something to work on if you come back for more? First to play the Shot in the Dark offensively is historic, what led you to play it like you did? Got any rice we should know about? Sorry we ran out of time.

To Sam: Seems you had a part to play in Operation: Italy, wanna talk about it and how it felt to pull it off? Pre-merge you were sitting pretty, what happened? Fire... not your thing? What about Teeny rambling on about you being the high school jock, except you were in high school drama classes and know the entire Glee cast by name?

To Sue: Well, we gotta talk about the smudges on your face, don't we? Don't like Kyle much, do ya? You know TweedleDee and TweedleDum mean identical and not dumb with a b, right? 45, huh?

To Teeny: Ummm.. hmm. Uhhh, you seem the type to like cats. Do you like animals?

Podcast for season 48 will have Season 47 winner Rachel as the former player perspective.
Hoping she comes as well prepared as Charlie did for S47 discussion.
Charlie was great! Thanks to people in this thread who turned me onto the podcast, it is a fun listen!

I have spent my Survivor off season power watching old seasons. I still like the old era way better than the new era. One of these days, we should do some rankings of top seasons, favorite survivors, best villains, etc.

100%. My wife and usually have an older season playing on a low burn.

CBS News Sunday Morning is having a segment with Jeff Probst this morning. Does anybody else watch CBS Sunday Morning? I love that show.

Listen to this man Probst!

The existence of the live reunion question means that CBS is willing to pay for it, at least this once.

It's a sign of the times and the state of network TV that for the 40th season, CBS splurged by increasing the top prize by $1 million, and for the 50th season, CBS is splurging by ... spending money on something they spent money on for the first 39 seasons.

I'm with you on the firemaking at final 4. But, I don't know of another solution. Don't like the possibility of a 2 vs 2 vote and what that could mean.

A 2 vs 2 vote means ... firemaking.

Well, I guess that gives them the option to possibly make it 3 v 1 instead of it automatically being a firemaking.

Elsewhere on the internet I've seen the suggestion of the three people who don't win the F4 immunity challenge all go into firemaking, and the last one to burn their rope is out.

So....it got dusty in here for me on this premiere. I wouldn't have normally watched a show like Survivor, just wasn't a reality show person. My son was born May 25, 2000 and had to spend multiple weeks in the NICU. While in the NICU, I didn't have control over the TV and I watched the first episode of Survivor. I thought it was pretty cool, but was really just focused on him. The next week, I was holding him again in the NICU, and episode 2 came on. I was hooked, I loved all the interplay between the castaways. We got to go home soon after that, and I just kept watching, it was really a national phenomenon early on.

My very same son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at age 5, which has now been assimilated into the Autism Spectrum. He is the most kind hearted person I know, very smart, but lacks some of the same social cues that Eva mentioned. We have watched Survivor together for years and I love when he tells me how he would play, then quickly noting that he's too believing and that someone would likely take advantage of him :D

I fully believe Joe when he told Eva that he had her, and I teared up. I will be rooting for these 2 as 1A and 1B the entire season. I think they are both gems.

I don't care for Sai, too aggressive and almost bullyish. Jury is out on Kevin with his hurt shoulder. Not a fan of the stunt guy as an early impression. The California Girls seems like a fun early alliance. I can't remember the guy who broke his jar in the challenge, but I thought that was a standup thing to do to help Kevin out, so pretty positive on him. No one else really stood out for me too much.

My son is on the autism spectrum and because of that I am rooting for Eva and Joe more than I have ever rooted for any contestant after one episode. Some of what she described is exactly what my son goes through, and to have someone who "gets it" immediately is incredibly valuable. (Selfishly, it doesn't hurt that Joe was my winner pick and I have him on both of my Survivor fantasy teams.)

I genuinely believe that those two will never turn on each other, to the point where if they are both in the final 4 and one of them wins immunity, they will bring the other to the final 3 regardless of threat level. Their biggest danger is that others catch on to how tight their bond is and decide they need to be separated.

Sai is the female version of Rome -- I didn't think we'd get one so soon. But like Rome, emphasizing gameplay over social bonding is keeping her safe early on because her tribe doesn't want to go against her idol. But it will bite her once her idol is used and her tribemates are confident she doesn't have another one. She was smart to make her idol public among her allies, though.

Stephanie did nothing but pal around with Mary and perform poorly on the puzzle. What did she think was going to happen?

Absolutely love those two, and I don't remember ever having such a great impression of anyone so fast.

I forgot about the guy (I think his name was Kyle?) helping Kevin with the challenge. That was very cool, too. Lots of likable players so far. And then there's Sai...

My wife and I and two of our daughters always do a draft at the conclusion of the first episode. Within five minutes, both my wife and my oldest daughter, watching separately in two different towns, both said simultaneously "I like Joe". Seems like the real deal. However, I had the first pick in the draft and didn't take him because I absolutely believed him when he said he would go out for Eva if that's what it took. So I took Eva instead.

Kyle, yes. The newest in a long line of players who is a lawyer but pretending not to be one.

I think he would do that. I also think that he could be targeted in the early merge for being a "challenge beast" and she might not be. See Kyle from 47, Hunter from 46, etc.

Correct. We discussed that about him and the stuntman.

He is super dooshy. Tries to act like he’s a lovable nerd. I’m not buying it bud.

They didn't have that for the first 34 seasons and it was just fine. I don't have a strong preference one way or the other but it will be fine without.

The producers put it in because they feared the "best" player was always getting taken out at 4. Now they get taken out at 5 or earlier.
