Survivor Season 48 - And The Oscar Goes To... (1 Viewer)

Agree with most of the thoughts here. Joe and Eva will clearly be a main story line as long as they hang around. And it all seemed genuine, so that's cool.

Sai is brutal. For the love of God....not everything is about the patriarchy holding you down. She goes into this whole rant about all the women in her life and how girl power lifted her up to solve the puzzle and find the idol. Uh........didn't you enlist the help of your entire tribe....including the men.... to figure it out? Calm down, Susan B Anthony.

Stephanie super annoying. Glad to see her go early. I couldn't deal with 30 days of astrology talk.

Loved the Pizza guy just wearing a green shirt that said "Pizza". We got a kick out of that.

David can be as nice and unassuming as he wants to be. He's a physical monster and will be the main target for everyone post-merge no matter what he does. You just can't be that big and strong and good looking and fly under the radar.

Agreed with most - it's the first episode after all.

Nice softy storyline for an unlikely pair - seems oh so genuine.

Will the Fire Captain and Lieutenant strike up an unofficial alliance?

Multiple wardrobe malfunctions for Star - the Sales Expert. Did they never see Survivor and know that mud is in the forecast for day 1?
- Host did great in calling out names / tribes even though they were covered in mud - well done (I think - he could have been saying random stuff and I still wouldn't have figured it out).

Sai gets the huge edit and limelight for playing hard and fast from the giddy'up. Makes for an early villain angle. Weird edit about 14 generations {Exaggeration} of family matriarchs helping her find the idol - but what about the peeps on the beach that figured out that easy puzzle to open it for her? Should have flushed that quickly with so many knowing it's there.

Great generic Pizza shirt by the 'Pizzeria Manager.'

Too much yappin' about star signs - see ya Stephanie, get that woo woo talk out of here.

Arse Surgeon Cedrek has a sense of humor - gotta like that. He'll be fart-her be-hind them ***-isting with the anal-ysis and rectum-fy any sit-uation.

Respect to Kyle for aiding Kevin after he busted the glass. Likely made a decent bond there.

'Stache is no Ron Burgandy or Ron Swanson - but I'll probably still call him Ron.

Muscle Bound Menace is going to be a vote magnet soon enough.

One tribe is at a big disadvantage physically - losing challenges will be the norm.

I fully believe Joe when he told Eva that he had her, and I teared up. I will be rooting for these 2 as 1A and 1B the entire season. I think they are both gems.

I don't care for Sai, too aggressive and almost bullyish. Jury is out on Kevin with his hurt shoulder. Not a fan of the stunt guy as an early impression. The California Girls seems like a fun early alliance. I can't remember the guy who broke his jar in the challenge, but I thought that was a standup thing to do to help Kevin out, so pretty positive on him. No one else really stood out for me too much.

Absolutely love those two, and I don't remember ever having such a great impression of anyone so fast.

I forgot about the guy (I think his name was Kyle?) helping Kevin with the challenge. That was very cool, too. Lots of likable players so far. And then there's Sai...
Same here! I was tearing up and I don’t even have children. It usually takes me a while to find the player I’m going to root for. This year was the first year I can remember where after week 1 I’m locked in.

Pretty funny stuff with the humble traits. I definitely would not have helped Star with the idol. I can't stand Sai and now I don't like Cedrek because he blew that plan up. Pizza man showed he was somewhat cutthroat by immediately going after Kevin. I'm not too torn up about Kevin leaving, but would have much rather had Sai leave.

The leader of the California Girls seems to be a player, and I'm not sure that's good news for JoeEva.

Ep 2

Orange tribe
4 nipples - 'nuf said.

Kyle finds the Beware Advantage Cryptex and Enlists help. Idol attained.
They are getting along nicely.

Pink tribe
Autistic Eva starts discounting Star's value to the team in front of everyone.
Star finds their camp's Beware Advantage. Let's see if she can figure out the Cryptex or lose her vote while on the bottom of the tribe.
She let's all know except Eva - who made herself a target. Joe is now in a dilemma - which alliance to uphold? Remember last episode's heartfelt bond?
Star (no vote via beware) vs Eva

Green tribe
Talking smartly about flushing Sai's idol. Cedrek - tells her to play it. Argh. Seems those 2 have an unedited pact so far. Trevor Lawrence Pizza oddly wants to go after Kevin (who sucks at challenges thus far).

Challenge: Combo of holding breath underwater to undo carabiner, balance beam walking in a pair holding a ball with a pole between them (hardest part), and shooting hoops. Eva and Mitch on fire for hoops. Mitch did not miss a shot - granny underhand style. Green back to tribal again.

Tribal: Nothing new at tribal that wasn't said earlier in the episode. Mary is the easy vote (lost during journey), but flush Sai's idol first. Kevin blindsided.

This is the third season in a row I picked which tribe would be terrible just from their first talk with Jeff on the beach. Wish Cedric would've stuck with the Sai blindsided, she's horrible. She'll be an easy vote out in just about any merge.
Never would have guessed that Mitch would be such a challenge beast.

Production really biffed the tribe divisions this year. Mitch and Thomas are better than expected at challenges and Kevin was worse than expected (possibly due to the shoulder injury).

Though I do wonder if they designed Purple to be like Orange from 42 and make them overpowered to "protect" people they think will be big characters from going pre-merge (Omar and Maryanne then, Star, Eva and maybe Shauhin now).

Unless the challenge is "who has the least messed-up feet", Green is probably going to tribal again, and then we'll probably get a swap like we did in 45.

Interesting that Stephanie's downfall was underplaying and Kevin's downfall was overplaying. Of course Sai, who is overplaying even more than Kevin, would have been booted in one of the first two episodes if she didn't have an idol that everyone knew about.

The leader of the California Girls seems to be a player, and I'm not sure that's good news for JoeEva.
If his plan to sabotage Star was left uncommented-upon, I would agree with you. But they showed Shauhin being shocked by it. That tells me it's more likely to backfire on Thomas than not.

The move made sense for Cedrek. Mary has no allies and Justin and Sai are closer to him than they are to each other. If this tribe gets down to 2 people, he's almost guaranteed to be one of them. I don't see how the move made sense for Justin, though.

It’s all Mary’s fault. Thomas and Mitch solved the puzzle. Mary had a chance to swing two votes, the one she lost and blocking Sai’s vote. Since butt doc spilled the beans, pizza guy flopped from Kevin’s plan. If Mary and Kevin have 2 votes and Sai doesn’t have one, pizza guy couldn’t flop.

Didn’t think of that but would she know before playing the idol? That makes that block a vote almost useless in that case. Kevin knew about that idol so if he’s working with Mary, they could have blocked Cedrek. Even so, that block a vote is a bit neutered because if anyone in an alliance knows they have an idol, they can say their vote was blocked so play an idol.

The order is vote (return to your seat if you've lost your vote or had it blocked), play idols/advantages, read the votes. I don't think they're allowed to openly strategize with each other after voting but before the votes are read. They would just have to communicate through body language/facial expressions and hope for the best.

For an episode with a blindside, it was pretty boring overall. I did love seeing Mitch kill it in the challenge.

On the green team, I can't bring myself to care about any of these people, so I'd be fine for them not to merge and let that tribe just dwindle to zero and then we move on with the more interesting teams. Of course I realize that's not what will happen. If I had to choose one, I like pizza shirt guy, but only because of his shirt.

Agree, he is the best of bad options all around.

Well, just a terrible episode. I've finally got some rankings after 3 weeks. With Cedric's infuriating behavior the last 2 weeks, he holds the bottom rank even over Sai, who I can't stand. If Cedric had half a brain, he could have realized he was pulling off a historic moment. Instead, it was clear that he can't even count after there was a missing vote after 2 elections. Jeff had to tell him. Sai did have the better argument that Justin wasn't up front with the lost vote, but what a missed opportunity. And she is cutting his throat the first chance she gets. I did love Mary's luck on the shot in the dark.

  • Rooting to win - Joe. Just an all-around good guy. His devotion to Eva, though inspiring, will likely limit him in the game. He fully knows it, and protects her anyway. Love him.
  • Pulling for - Eva, Mitch, Shauhin, Mary, Charity, Kyle. Each seem to be decent people. I love Eva's story but I think this will be an obstacle too large for her to overcome. Her tight bond with Joe has also put a target on both their backs.
  • Slight lean positive - David. Kind of heartbreaking with the "I only have a family if I win". I don't imagine the girlfriend will enjoy seeing that. Surprisingly, Thomas. I like his kind of sly underhandedness but I can also see that rubbing me the wrong way particularly if he takes aim at Joe. Already has Eva on the block.
  • Who are you? - Bianca and Chrissy - just don't know enough about them.
  • Don't like - Sai and Star. Sai has been the bossy drama starter the whole season. I just get really negative vibes from Star, but that may be the edit she is getting. I don't like her treatment of Eva, but I also understand it. Eva unwittingly called her out one episode, then had a thinly veiled feel out session with her the next.
  • Can't stand - Cedric. You could have gotten rid of Sai last time, and you opened your mouth and messed it up. You voted for her twice and then had the sole option. What did you think was going to happen? He had no clue. He gives a stipulation to keep her in the game that has no weight. Can't stand him and I would be afraid if he was my surgeon.

Three episodes in, Cedrek has voted for every single other member of his tribe.

Tribal 1: Stephanie
Tribal 2: Kevin
Tribal 3 regular vote: Mary
Tribal 3 revote: Sai
Tribal 3 final decision: Justin

No one has ever more desperately needed a swap than him. And he's getting it next episode. He'd better hope both Sai and Mary are on different tribes.

Ep 3
Orange Tribe
Stuntman David gets the personal edit - 38 years old and lives in a trailer in front of his dad's house - whoa. Needs the prize money to get his finances and life in order. Too bad that the muscle bound menace types are usually booted quickly. Software Engineer Kamilla already typecast him as a 'Chad' - the tall, handsome, get all the girls thirsty for them type.

PE Teacher Mitch and new edit Flight Attendant Charity might be making a final 2 duo. You can tell she's a flight attendant since she speaks with her hands in exact motions. Mitch tries to bring in Attorney Kyle for a trio. Kyle has multiple alliances going on and feels safe (also has an idol).

Pink Tribe
Low energy group except Fire Captain Joe building a bonfire on the beach and taking comical dinner orders off the invisible menu. He's the positive vibe for the tribe - going to gain a following from fans.

Musicman Thomas sure has a nice shiner for an eye.

Joe, Professor Shauhin, and Thomas make up the California Girls alliance (yes, they are men - from California... could have just been the Beach Boys, but whatever).

No one is helping Star with her cryptex for the idol. She's an unprepared mess regarding wardrobe - first day the shirt was falling off, now her pants can't stay up. Autistic Eva threw her under the bus before, now wants to talk strat - but just to see if Star will say she has an advantage. Eva is going to get herself booted eventually as she's not that sly. Suggests getting rid of a puzzler since they have 2 - Star walks on over and mentions that to her potential allies PR Bianca and Tom. Hey, they might help her with the idol and gain a majority.

Pretty even edit for all.

Green Tribe
Low edit episode.

Sai not happy being less respected than she thought she was. Playing too hard too fast will do that. Can't be that bossy (or is it Boss-ai?) without laying down some paychecks!

Counselor Mary still on the bottom - off to look for an idol now that Sai's got flushed. Villain Sai wants Mary babysat at all times - LOL, hide and seek! Chases her around and around and around.

Challenge - Course where a caller tells blindfolded teammates where to go and what to do via obstacles. Someone's taking a groin shot or head shot or both - guaranteed - yup, David did. Even the puzzle at the end is blindfolded. Joe amazingly runs out quickly and gets to his station without verbal aid - someone was studying the course. Sai does NOT know her left and right directions. Green loses yet again - all 3 tribals.

Journey: Game of Chance - dice. Extra Vote (1) vs Lose Vote (2). Pizzaman of Green now has to worry since no vote at tribal and can be the easy out. Has to make up some BS.

Idols: Kyle (hidden, but known), Star still working on the Beware Advantage for one.

Mary comes back to camp and plays it cool like she has an idol. Sai is frantic and domineering like always.
Tribal: Mary accepts all votes and still cool. Ends up playing her Shot in the Dark - SAFE. Well played! There's only 2 votes - both for Mary. Hmmm, someone forgot to tell the others he lost his vote.
Re-Vote for the 2 that can - 1 Pizzaman 1 Sai = tie, goes to vote for only those 2. Has to be revealed that Pizzaman has no vote. Sai can vote for only Justin, but Cedryk can vote for either (he voted for ally Sai in the tie). Will he change to Justin? Sai... 1-1 again. As the only person with a vote and is not in the tie Cedryk gets to save/eliminate someone. Historic!
Justin was first connection made, but didn't reveal he lost his vote. Sai was second connection made and pleads that she has not/will never lie to him.

Wow.. Cedryk saves Sai on the stipulation that Sai HAS to work on the relationship with Mary. He can't be around the intimidation pressure at camp.

Pizzaman Trevor Lawrence, err Justin - c'ya, wouldn't want to be ya!

Even though I would have preferred Sai gone - Outstanding ending!

3 Green remain = Reshuffle the tribes coming up.

Last season was great. This season not so much. Maybe because they have spent so much time on this group that is not interesting and bad at the game. Hopefully improves when they mix things up.
I'd withhold judgment until people other than the disaster tribe go to tribal.

At this point in 46, people were agonizing over the Bhanu-ness of it all. He was gone soon and the season went on to become the best of the new era.

Exactly.........Cedric voted for Sai and then keeps her. She isn't going to forget that.
If he had picked Justin, then Justin might feel obligated to Cedric down the line.

And while we're at it: Why didn't Justin plead his case better? He just sat there & let Sai dictate the conversation.....I can't imagine the production crew would edit his plea out.

Thank God we are done having to spend so much time with that loser tribe. Wish Cedric would've been smart enough to get rid of Sai but she'll be gone soon enough.
Hopefully the new tribes will provide better entertainment.
Sure, hope you are right.
But every year someone like her becomes the drag along to the final 3. (n)

In her particular case, it depends on JUST how annoying she is.

Abi-Maria played twice. In both her seasons, the leaders of the majority alliance planned to take her to the end because no one would vote for her to win. Both times, after a while they couldn't take her anymore and voted her out. Sai certainly has that potential.

She could also Rome herself out of the game at the merge or fake merge.

It'll be interesting to see what happens if Sai and Star end up on the same tribe. They could be like "hey, we're in similar situations, maybe we should work together." Or they could be like "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE."

Cedric is one of the worst players we have seen in awhile. I'm sure Sai will just move right on from this and embrace him. Smh. 10 years ago Joe would have a legitimate shot at winning this. Just seems like a good guy. Today's players get rid of those good guys quickly.

Survivor has produced one winner like Joe: Tom Westman in season 10 (and he was also a jacked firefighter in his 40s). People like this get targeted in early or mid-merge for being a "challenge beast" and/or a "social threat" and it's been like this for a much longer time than 10 years.

joe is that all American nice guy. I was kinda putting JT his first season, Ozzy etc in that grouping. Guys like that are really gonna struggle to win. Imo

Does that dummy not realize that their tribe was gonna be broken up once they got down to 3 people? Why would you base your elimination on the two of them promising to try and get along?

People are dumb
It's like I always use to say if lard was common sense most folks couldn't grease a pan.

After what I thought was a dud episode this week, I really liked this episode. Kyle and Kamilla pulled off an Oscar worthy performance, with Kamilla even shedding tears at Tribal. Tremendous on both parts, even ad libbing really well at the start of it. Thomas took the vote out well, sorry to see the California Girls break up. I'm not sure why they didn't split the vote. They could reasonably suspect someone had an idol but probably not both. The split vote would have guaranteed at least a revote (without knowing if an extra or steal a vote was in play). I'm not actually sure if Kyle played the extra vote, it looked like he pulled it out but couldn't tell in the exit interview that he used it. Also, if you are going to go through someone's bag, at least do it thoroughly. I thought Kyle had it with him until Kamilla said "they searched". That would have changed the dynamic quite a bit.

Was sad to see Joe and Eva be broken up, even if it is probably better for Joe's game. I was glad to see Eva make a connection with David, who is now growing on me. I don't see anyway his either current or ex-girlfriend stays with him after this airs, as he has painted her in a poor light. I love that Charity was over confident and telling people that she runs David, when she was apparently on the bottom of their tribe without her knowing.

Bianca seems to be in a bad spot, but there again she's in the same tribe as noted geniuses Sai and Cedrick. She tells Sai she wants to play with that duo, and she pretty much says "meh". Still do not like Sai. I did enjoy Cedrick's interaction with Mitch.

Updated Tiers:

  • Rooting to win - Joe remains my favorite.
  • Pulling for - Eva, Mitch, Shauhin, Mary, Kyle, Kamilla, David. David and Kamilla move up, and Charity down. Brilliant performance by Kamilla and she can be a real threat to win.
  • Slight lean positive - Bianca moves up. Seems pretty smart but in a bad position with no vote.
  • Who are you? - Chrissy - Still don't know enough about them, but leaning more positive than negative.
  • Don't like - Cedrick and Star. Cedrick moves up to "don't like" because of his interaction with Mitch. I bet he's a decent person IRL but he is a terrible player. I wouldn't want to be around Star much either.
  • Can't stand - Sai takes over Cedrick's former tier. Would just be a disaster to be around.

Ep 4
Green tribe
Surgeon Cedryk has cold, shaky hands - you know, not good for a surgeon even if it's for the backside where you can't see the mis-cuts. Something just doesn't sit right.
Villainous Marketer Sai already surmising that she made a commitment to someone that put her in the position. Didn't take long. D'awww, left a beach note for Counselor Mary to come idol hunting - all 3 need it before they break up the broken band, err re-shuffle the tribes.

6v6v3 becomes 5v5v5 (Cedryk and Sai fall into the same new tribe). Mary apologizes in advance for the green camp.
Throw out what we thought we knew... it's now a storyline episode with the mix-up. But hey, we get to meet new people.

Purple tribe
4 Girls = power
Autistic Eve no longer has Joe, but hits it off with Stuntman David over the love of jet skis. She only works with well with men and he's got 3 sisters. David still on the 'water is bleh' trip and loves chocolate milk - but somehow is the fit guy on the island. Flight Attendant Charity does the opposite of most people when talking about being close to others - oh no, she and David are tight, he'll do whatever she wants. Thinks she has him on lockdown. Yet.. David relays that he hasn't trusted Charity since day 1 and wants to vote her out. LOL

Eve vs Sales Star remains. Immediately Eve offers the rest of the new tribe Star as a sacrificial offering as a vote - no old tribe allegiance here. Announces Star has the Beware Advantage. She's just bean flavored tea - spilling both (beans and tea). Originally an episode 1 darling, Eve continuously shows a lot of issues for long game play.

Orange tribe
PR Bianca is on the bottom with no original tribe members (and no vote - lost it on journey), says to Sai that she'd like to work with her and Cedryk - and Sai says 'get a vibe first'. Yup, there's a crack for Bianca to use... but don't think she should try to fill it (get with other side).

Bonding - Cedryk reveals to Stutterer Mitch that he stuttered at an early age and it can still trigger to happen. Cedryk still thinks Sai is loyal to him.
Meanwhile Sai is dishing Cedryk info to Bianca. Finally getting an edit is Firefighter Chrissy thinking that Bianca is an easy vote since she's solo.

Green tribe
All 3 California Girls = power
No original greens...LOL - they get to camp and see what has lost every challenge (no tools, flint, tarp, etc). Unhoused or homeless - whatever you want to call it.
Musicman Thomas' black eye is healing some. He gets another edit reminding us he can steal a vote and no one knows. Attorney Kyle has an idol and Software Engineer Kamilla has an extra vote. They act like they were oppositional sides with old tribe, but were working together. Kamilla plants the seeds of doubt on Thomas regarding the journey - he couldn't 'walk away' like he said he did.

(new Green says the losing streak ends today)
Challenge - Lift sandbags, roll a 10-ft cube through the sand to get up to additional sandbags, toss saandbags through frame to land on a barrell, dig up a puzzle piece and complete the puzzle finish. Mitch is on fire - with those underhand tosses. Purple goes from 2 portions back to first. Green was close to first, but wrong - and goes (back?) to tribal. For the first time, all 3 original Green do not go to tribal.

Play both the idol and the extra vote vs the California Girls? Survive a day. Kamilla watches on as Professor Shauhin searches Kyle's bag - finds nothing (idol was in a shoe in the bag). Kamilla gives Kyle her extra vote so it doesn't look like they are playing together?
Tribal: All talk of an easy vote with 3 strong California Girls. Kyle plays his idol (3). Adding insult to injury = Thomas (2) goes to jury with a black eye and a steal a vote in his pocket.

Idols: It's like the second week now, but Star is still working on the Beware Advantage.

Not a bad episode but I was surprised at how bad the Cali girls were at reading Kyle and Kamilla (sp?). It’s Thomas’ Fault that he so desperately wanted to hide his steal a vote that he threw away a guaranteed win. Sure, vote for Kyle some but use the steal a vote as well so you have a 4-1 (or 4-2 with extra vote) lead so you could place 2 on Kyle and 2 on Kamilla just in case of an idol.

It is amazing how many votes so far (3 IMHO), have been just terrible decisions and terrible plays by the folks who had the upper hand.

I STRONGLY feel like going through bags should be 100% outlawed.

I will die on this hill.
Honestly don’t care either way but if you are going to do it at least do it well. Still amazes me that the 3 guys didn’t even think there was a chance they were being played. Again, Thomas blew it as his steal a vote could have guaranteed his safety but search the bag with just your alliance there not your enemy. Also, Thomas double blew it by not looking himself. If you feel you are on the line, you do the search.

Rachel had an interesting take on this on Probst's podcast last night.

She said people get worked up about bag searches because in real life it's "an incredible invasion of privacy." But on Survivor, everyone lies and manipulates every day, "so drawing the line at searching someone's bag is just giving up the opportunity for more information. We're playing for a million dollars. Bag searching happens a lot. It's usually not shown because we don't find anything. Shauhin should have searched Kyle's bag longer. He might have found something and the California Girls might be intact."
