Taking 2 WRs As Your First Two Picks (1 Viewer)

IF you could start your draft with two of the following 'stud' WRs would you consider it and why?

Andre Johnson

Calvin Johnson

Roddy White

Larry Fitzgerald

Hakim Nicks

Greg Jennings

Vincent Jackson

Mike Wallace

Looking at AJ at 1.06 over CJ2K or McCoy depending on what 1.05 does (PPR). For the 2nd round it depends who is there ... Forte, Gore, MJD, SJax or similar I'm taking him. If we're talking Hillis, Bradshaw, etc as best RB then either Vick/Rodgers fell or perhaps Fitz. I suspect it'd be VJax which gives me 3 equal choices I'd think.

I took Calvin at 1.9 and Vincent Jackson in the second. I like stud wide receivers and always gamble at rb every year. It's just the way I draft.

Having said that, my rb situation is alwas a little precarious.

I'm liking my rb situation this year, but I'm still gambling.

Rb1

Ingram (he could be great or could share with Pierre, but I own Pierre as well)

Rb2

Beanie Wells (got very lucky with Williams going down)

Jacobs, Starks, Snelling, Pierre on the bench. (Hoping one of these guys pans out)

Qb-wr-wr-rb-rb-flex-te-pk-def (4 point passing)

Not this year. Too many great WR's available in rounds 4-6. If you have a chance to grab a good RB early, you should do so.

I went this strategy last night at my first draft.

Here were the results:

Calvin 1.09

Fitz 2.04

Bradshaw 3.09

Mathews 4.02

Felix 5.09

Jermichael Finley 6.02

Joseph Addai 7.09

Manningham 8.02

Hightower 9.09

Schaub 10.02

other backups

I will say I think the mid round rb's this year allow you to get stud wr's early. Due to the best matchup I have 5 good options at rb.

Its a strategy I will try to do in every draft I have this year.

This strategy can be great, but you should only do it if you have a later pick like 7 or later in 10 teamers and even later in larger leagues. That way you only have a few picks between your 1st and second round and know what you are looking at in the second. If you are an early pick it doesn't make sense not to take a stud RB and if one of the top 5 guys falls to you then you should go ahead and take that player. I also think this only applies in PPR as two stud WRs like AJ and Fitz can guarantee top production while in non PPR I'd rather have the top RB/QB available in the first. IMO it's a lot easier to find capable RBs during the year on WW and to draft guys that breakout during the year than it is to get WRs of the same level.

I did this last night (non-ppr) picking tenth in a ten team league - 8 rb's and aaron rodgers went, so I took Calvin and AJ at the turn. Was very happy with it. Would much rather take the top wr's over the ninth/tenth best rb, even in non-ppr.

Ended up with a RB group of Ingram, Greene, Beanie, Reggie/Michael Bush, and Delone Carter. It'll do.

I am usually against this strategy because it takes away your 3/4 round flexibility. For instance, what if some very good WR's slide down to you in the 3/4th round? Plus, if you are drafting at the turn, the guys before you will snatch up all the RB's knowing they can get WR's after the turn.

Of course, the same can happen if you go rb/rb or add a qb in your first 2 pics. This is why I always TRY to go RB/wr or WR/RB to start it off if I have a late first round pick

In a 12-team PPR draft yesterday (2 keepers - my keepers are Ray Rice and Andre Johnson) I found great WR2 value in Rounds 6 to 10. Maybe it's just how my draft played out, but I took 3 RBs in the first five rounds (Ray Rice, Steven Jackson, Felix Jones) and the following WRs fell to me in Rounds 6 to 10:6.10 Manningham7.03 Collie8.10 Britt9.03 Mike Thomas10.10 Jacoby FordWhile I don't have a single "strong" WR2 I have several "lower tier" WR2s that I view with upside. During Rounds 6 to 10 most everyone else was drafting RBs and TEs. I then wound up with the likes of Gronkowski and Winslow in Rounds 11 and 12. If anything, I learned that there was very little RB value in Rounds 6 to 12, at least for this particular draft. The one team that went WR/WR in Rounds 1 and 2 wound up with Fitzgerald and Nicks, then Best, PThomas, Boldin, Schaub, and Addai.
