Talk of firing Romeo? (1 Viewer)

No link. Apparently there is a rumor going around that the Browns may buy out Romeo Crennel's contract. Any homers that can confirm or deny this?

If it's true, what (if any) effect would this have on Braylon and Winslow (or any other offensive weapon in Cleveland)?

I haven't really watched enough of the Browns to make a fair assessment of Crennel's coaching ability, but they didn't have alot of quality NFL talent on the roster when they hired him 2 years ago and they don't have that much now, either. It seems to me today's owners/GM's need to look in the mirror once in awhile before they go making a scapegoat out of the head coach. Of course, these moves are probably made to promote/protect future ticket sales as they are to actually improve the quality on the field.

Hey,..if they do,I hope he ends up back with the Pats. The "D" hasn't been the same with Mangini or Peese. Romeo 's one of those guys who was a great defensive co-ordinator (Rod Rust,Dave Wannstadt, etc.) but was overwhelmed with the HC job...

big time cleveland homer.

went to cavs tonight

going to the bucs game tomorrow

and tailgating then going to the game on sunday

listen sports talk all I can

absolutely no talk of getting rid of Crennel.

any link to back up this RUMOR?

where did you hear this?

without any backup for your info thread should be closed

I have to believe this is just a baseless rumor. Crennell just got there and he inherited one of the worst teams in the league. The Cleveland front office needs to give him more time.

Doesn't seem that far-fetched. The Browns are 9-16 since he showed up. Another last place finish and there will be heat on him for sure.

IMO Romeo is doing well with what he has to work with. Doubt he is on the hot seat.

that, and seems Muldoon has been pissing all over the pool, not just this thread.

If they do fire him ... they are RACIST bastages!! I hope The Reverrrrrrends Sharpton and Jerkson step up.
Come on now....no need for the race card. If the Raiders fired Shell would you cry the same thing??????Either the coach is a good coach or bad.....it makes no difference te color of his skin!

I was on the Cleveland Plain Dealer website and there were some fans speculating that Romeo may get fired and Bill Cowher would be hired in his place.

Apparently the Browns front office loves Cowher and supposedly would be willing to offer him upwards of $8 million/season, which is money the Rooneys would never pay for a HC.

Personally I think it is all bull. Cowher still has a season on his contract and there is no way the Steelers are going to let him out of that to coach the Browns. Cowher's family has moved to NC and I think he will be content to stay at home to watch his daughter's play basketball and do occassional appearances on TV.

When Cowher does decide to return to coaching he'll have no problems finding a job and for top dollar.

As for Romeo, I think he has at least until next season...

And yet the league insists that you interview at least one minority coaching candidate before hiring someone. So much for color-blindness. Race belongs in this discussion because the NFL has insisted that it be a part of the NFL head coaching discussion.

As for Crennel specifically, I fail to see how a front office that has provided him with as little support as they have, and a team (particularly an o-line) that has had as many injuries as they've had are his fault.

I sent Muldoon a PM to provide me proof of one instance where an NFL head coach was dismissed due to his race.I must say that I am shocked that I haven't received a response.

The Browns have a young QB, young WRs, and a recycled RB. Let's wait until they actually have some talent on the field before making a decision on the coach. Otherwise you're just gonna end up firing your coach every 2 years and you'll never break the cycle.

Race belongs in this discussion because the NFL has insisted that it be a part of the NFL head coaching discussion.
Gotta disagree with that one. Following that logic race belongs in every conversation because of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. You can see how silly that would be. Race is usually injected into topics here not by the subject matter, but by posters with an axe to grind.

No, the Civil Rights Act reference is silly. Are you denying that the NFL requires franchises to interview minority candidates when hiring new coaches? Is it so ridiculous to suggest that the logical correllary of such a policy is that decisions to fire minority coaches should be subject to special reconsideration? As for any axes to grind, the only axes I grind are stupid requirements that only perpetuate racism rather than actually addressing core problems. I don't view the world through race-colored glasses and that's why I resent hiring requirements which only breed resentment. Anyway, there's probably nothing to this story about Crennel, much less any suspicion that race forms a part of any decision involving him at this point.

My point exactly. Some troll just inserted race into the thread to watch the inevitable.

I think Muldoon's response was a poor attempt at sarcasm. Either way it was lame.

The Browns cannot fire him. If they do, they will spend the next 10-15 years with a revolving door at the helm. What they need to do is allow someone the time it takes to turn a franchise around. The coach is not the problem. It's the fact that they have not been able to get the players needed TO turn the franchise around through the draft and FA.

Not a Browns fan by any means either.

According to the Steeler's insider site, Randy Lerner told a Cleveland TV station off the record that he was enamored with Cowher coaching the Browns. Not that's its a sign of anything. Many teams would say the same thing. The article that seems to be based on that "off the record" discussion is here: Plain DealerI've not been able to find any mention of the 8mil/yr contract though. I'd agree w/GB that the number is pure fan speculation.

I don't think they'll stick a fork in Crennel yet.

But I'm sure if he's gone, it'll only have a positive impact on the offensive players.

Typically defensive minded (first time) head coaches are a bit more conservative and tend to run the ball more.

I have heard some rumblings that Romeo is not too bright.

Being a HC is much different than being an DC.

Why is it that Wide Receiver Coach Terry Robiskie's son Brian (on Ohio State) is better than ANY receiver on the Browns? Is he spending more time coaching his son than the team? ;)

They should have done it when this thread was started. I'm a Raider fan, so I know a DOG when I see one.

Nice guy and all... but put him out of his misery, already.

Romeo is rumored to be headed to San Francisco, if he is fired in ClevelandSingletary would return to the Assistant Head Coach position and would likely be promoted to Defensive Coordinator as well and would be groomed as Romeo's successorThe 49ers brass and coaching staff will look like this:General Manager - Mike HolmgrenScouting Director - Scot McCloughanHead Coach - Romeo CrennelOffensive Coordinator - Tom RathmanDefensive Coordinator - Mike SingletaryI wouldn't expect or count on Martz being in SF past this season either, clearly a desperation hire by Nolan who should have either learned the offensive side of the ball, or hired a young, competent coordinator a long time ago. The Martz hiring was too little way too late

This coming from a guy who's beloved franchise hired and fired Art Shell, not once, but twice?

Why would SF demote their current HC and hire a failure from Cleveland? I don't know the situation in SF but this sounds ridiculous.

The 49ers brass and coaching staff will look like this:

General Manager - Mike Holmgren

Scouting Director - Scot McCloughan

Head Coach - Romeo Crennel

Offensive Coordinator - Tom Rathman

Defensive Coordinator - Mike Singletary

I wouldn't expect or count on Martz being in SF past this season either, clearly a desperation hire by Nolan who should have either learned the offensive side of the ball, or hired a young, competent coordinator a long time ago. The Martz hiring was too little way too late

Singletary is in line for the head coaching position down the road in SF, but by no means is he currently ready to be an NFL Head Coach. Hasn't even been more than an NFL positon coach, so he's got alot to learn before he's NFL Head Coach ready.Romeo interviewed with SF for the Head Coaching position and was one of the top candidates the year that Nolan was hired. Here's an old article:

Crennel also did well with 49ers

A league source told The Boston Globe that Crennel "just blew away" the Cleveland front office during his interview Friday, and a six-hour interview with the 49ers late Friday and early Saturday also left officials from that team impressed.

"His stock skyrocketed with the Cleveland people," said the league official, who has knowledge of the interview. "At this point, I'd be very surprised if Romeo doesn't emerge as a head coach after his season is over."

Crennel's track record, his ties to Bill Belichick and his disciplinarian ability to deal with a growing number of Browns malcontents all play in his favor.

A year after talking to several teams in a short period of time, Crennel was better prepared for the interview process.

But there are other known candidates for the Browns post. Browns interim coach Terry Robiskie met with team owner Randy Lerner, president John Collins and general manager Phil Savage in New York on Monday to interview for the position that became open when Butch Davis resigned.

Robiskie has the backing of the players, who have been outspoken in supporting him. But Cleveland went 4-12 this season and struggled on offense with Robiskie as coordinator.

The Browns lost four straight after Robiskie took over for Davis, but he inspired the players to win the final game of the season and snap a nine-game losing streak.

The other three candidates are still working for their teams in the playoffs, which could delay a decision.

Savage said the Browns are willing to wait until after the Super Bowl, if necessary, to hire the right candidate.

The final call on a coach will be Lerner's, but Savage will have a major role in the decision.

"If we find the right guy quickly, we'll probably go ahead and do something," Savage said last week. "Right now, I don't think there is a specific timeline."

Crennel also faces stiff competition from Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress, who interviewed for six hours Tuesday, and Steelers line coach Russ Grimm, who interviewed Saturday.

Browns spokeswoman Lisa Levine said the team also plans interviews Tuesday with former Miami Dolphins interim coach and defensive coordinator Jim Bates and Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Nolan.

Singletary is a head coach now and will remain so for the rest of the season. He will has more experience than Mike Tomlin did when he took over the HC job for the Steelers.I will be shocked if Singletary accepts a demotion for a guy that has already proven to be a lousy HC.

Wrong! Singletary is the interim Head Coach. See definition of interim, belowAn interim is a temporary pause in a line of succession or event. It is frequently used as an appositive noun, in which case it serves as an adjective meaning "in between," "transitional," or "temporary."

Defensive Cooardinator would be a promotion from his LB Coach positon he had when the season started

According to the team website, Mike Singletary's title is head coach: Link.Defensive coordinator is a demotion in my book.

But I am not going to argue with you. If they hire Romeo Crennel as HC, after he has proven to be an awful HC, and Singletary accepts the DC job then I will give you credit for reporting it first.

Again I don't know the situation at SF but this would be a really stupid move.

I'm expecting Romeo to get fired this week. Possibly today. His effort in leading a team is awful, and the Browns fans want him gone.

They got Quinn finally, now Romeo is next

In Romeo's defense, that team is a ton more talented than it was when he took that position

can you really expect one man to reverse decades of losing within a franchise? It's not like he was hired by the Steelers, Cowboys, or a franchise built on winning and totally failed or laid an egg

Doubt that'll happen but he probably needs 8-8 or 7-9 with a win over the Steelers to come back netx year. A part of me hopes we fall short so he is shown the door, but I just can't root against us.

This all just your own personal speculation, right? Is there a link anywhere confirming any of this? Last I read was that Holmgren has repeatedly said that next year is a "sabbatical" year for him.

sabbatical from coaching :confused:he has stated on numerous occassions that he would be open to a front office position

Crennel has made terrible decision after terrible decision after terrible decision. He has no idea how to manage a game, his team always looks unprepared and his personnel decisions are awful. It was pretty clear that he was not the one that made the decision to go to Quinn even though everyone could see that it's what needed to be done. He's supposed to be a defensive genius and yet the defensive is awful. He's an atrocious Head Coach. If the Niners hire him to be their HC, then they deserve to wallow in their mediocrity.
