A league source told The Boston Globe that Crennel "just blew away" the Cleveland front office during his interview Friday, and a six-hour interview with the 49ers late Friday and early Saturday also left officials from that team impressed.
"His stock skyrocketed with the Cleveland people," said the league official, who has knowledge of the interview. "At this point, I'd be very surprised if Romeo doesn't emerge as a head coach after his season is over."
Crennel's track record, his ties to Bill Belichick and his disciplinarian ability to deal with a growing number of Browns malcontents all play in his favor.
A year after talking to several teams in a short period of time, Crennel was better prepared for the interview process.
But there are other known candidates for the Browns post. Browns interim coach Terry Robiskie met with team owner Randy Lerner, president John Collins and general manager Phil Savage in New York on Monday to interview for the position that became open when Butch Davis resigned.
Robiskie has the backing of the players, who have been outspoken in supporting him. But Cleveland went 4-12 this season and struggled on offense with Robiskie as coordinator.
The Browns lost four straight after Robiskie took over for Davis, but he inspired the players to win the final game of the season and snap a nine-game losing streak.
The other three candidates are still working for their teams in the playoffs, which could delay a decision.
Savage said the Browns are willing to wait until after the Super Bowl, if necessary, to hire the right candidate.
The final call on a coach will be Lerner's, but Savage will have a major role in the decision.
"If we find the right guy quickly, we'll probably go ahead and do something," Savage said last week. "Right now, I don't think there is a specific timeline."
Crennel also faces stiff competition from Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress, who interviewed for six hours Tuesday, and Steelers line coach Russ Grimm, who interviewed Saturday.
Browns spokeswoman Lisa Levine said the team also plans interviews Tuesday with former Miami Dolphins interim coach and defensive coordinator Jim Bates and Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Nolan.
