Tampa Bay OC Jeff Jagodzinski - replaced with Greg Olson (1 Viewer)

ok. two immediate questions:

1) what do we know about olson?

2) who were jagodzinski's guys? who was he high on?

In three years, Spags and Schwartz will be the only new coaches from 2009 to still have their jobs. And Schwartz only because the Fords take forever to fire people.

wth? Jags based his offense on playaction. Leftwich was chosen as #1 QB because coach Morris stated that he could handle the playaction, downfield passes better than McCown. Now what?

Detroit during the Joey era, St Louis during the post Martz era. Unsure of specific roles, but regardless... :tfp:

I don't know about Jags. With his exodus from BC, there came an awful lot of questions about the guy's character. In this particular case, I'll hold of on judgement until more details come out.

I don't recall that (not saying you're wrong). I remember BC threatened his job if he interviewed with an NFL team. Which he did, and they followed through. If wonder, if Mularkey is hired away next season, if we might see a Jags/Ryan reunion?

The only character issue was that he lied to the BC AD when asked if was out pimping for NFL jobs.

This reminds me of his mysterious firing in 2004 from Green Bay as tight ends coach. Philosophical differences with Jagodzinski led to his firing, head coach Mike Sherman said, declining to elaborate. He may just be a tough person to get along with.

Right. But then I though I read more about him being more concerned about things other than his current job. I don't remember exactly. I could be off base.

Bucs fans, is this as bizarre as it seem to the casual fan? Did anyone see this coming? What a weird preseason for the rookie coaches this year.

lol, at them offering the guy the QB coach position. Thanks, but no thanks. I heard he wanted Luke, and was pissed they didn't let him pick his QB. Funny, because last year I heard Olsen (new OC) loved McCown as well. This looks bad for the Bucs, the new GM, and the new HC.

press conference at noon on 620

"I am certainly disappointed but I wish nothing but the best for Raheem Morris and the entire Buccaneer organization. I was given the chance to remain on staff as the quarterbacks coach, but felt that the timing for such a move was not in the best interest for either side. I appreciate the opportunity that was given to me. Again, I wish nothing but the best for this organization.” - Jags

I'll bet it started with the drafting of Freeman, then got to the Point of No Return when Raheem dictated the starting QB.

I'm happy about this. I don't want another useless 8-8, 7-9, 6-10 season. We need to go 2-14, trade out of the top spot to someone who covets Bradford, and load up on defensive players.

Olson previously served as the quarterbacks coach of the Detroit Lions, where he worked with Joey Harrington. He served as Lions offensive coordinator following the firing of Steve Mariucci and the demotion of Ted Tollner during the 2005 season.

He was the offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams. During his first season in St. Louis, he did not call the offensive plays for the team until near the end of the year. He developed game plans with head coach Scott Linehan, and worked to develop the offense in general. Linehan decided to hand over play-calling duties to Olson so that he could manage games better, without having to focus on one side of the ball.

Olson was fired after the 2007 season.[1]

In January 2008, Olson was hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be their Quarterbacks coach following the dismissal of Paul Hackett. On September 3 2009, the day before the team's final preseason game, the Buccaneers announced that Olson would replace Jeff Jagodzinski as Offensive Coordinator
2005 - Lions404 Ru, 520 Pas

2007 - Rams

404 Ru, 574 pass

Interesting split...ironic same # of run plays. Pass first mentality folks. He doesn't appear to be that good of a coordinator.

How much of that split was dictated by the defenses of the 2005 Lions and 2007 Rams?Besides the quote even says he didn't call the plays with the Rams.

I completely forgot about Steve Logan. ECU guys love him...IIRC, he led the Jeff Blake and Garrard ECU teams.
Logan and Jags worked together at ECU and BC. I imagine Logan is not happy about Jags departure.
Forgot Jags was the HC at ECU. But Logan was the HC also, and has been attached to the same stable of QBs that Jags always gets credit for. Plus it's been said today that Logan was calling the plays anyway.Maybe he sees this as his chance to be the guy.

How does this impact Antonio Bryant Bucs fans?

Will it just be a bombs away approach to the offense? Leftwich has a cannon

Not sure about the schemes, but the Bucs will be playing from behind all season. AB's got to be involved in that.

Where did you hear that -- re McCown? Somehow that makes sense...

That thought is all over sports radio here.

Agreed on the need for a 2-14 season which results in the #1 pick, but I'd keep Bradford and hope he is as good as he looks.

I agree with you.this franchise needs a QB desparately. But for that to happen I think we'll have to see a coaching change, since Raheem said he would have taken Freeman #1 overall last year.

in the little bit of freeman's play that i saw in the preseason, i thought he looked pretty good. a little deer in the headlights action, but i liked the mechanics and the way he carried himself. he's your starter by week 12 -- week 1 of 2010 at the latest.

It's certainly unusual to see this happen, much less twice in a week, but I have to give credit to Morris and Haley for making the moves. They obviously know making switches this late in the preseason is suboptimal, but felt strongly enough to pull the trigger anyway. As a fan of either team, looking for a sign of leadership from the new head coach, this is good to see.

Unfortunately for the Bucs, they've opted to replace him with Greg Olson. That's not good.

Can you explain a little bit about why he sucks. I don't know much about him other than what was posted in this thread about him being there with Harrington, and post Martz. Thanks.

I'm an ECU alumni. Jags was never a HC at ECU, but Logan was. Jags was the offensive line coach the whole time he was there. Logan was the OC when Jeff Blake played, and became the HC the next year and was the HC during the Garrard years. Logan has a great offensive mind and he was very well liked at ECU.

Aha. I know that my ECU friend always gives Logan the credit...now I understand why.So Jags obviously shot up the ladder quicker than Logan...and Logan lost his last shot. So Logan I'm sure sees this as his opp to shoot back up. I know he's great with young QBs, and he's got one.

Gump, your lack of optimism this year is disgusting. At least wait until week 3 to hang it up. :lmao:
 Sad I know...and I've never been this negative. That schedule does it to me though. I do like some of the pieces we've assembled, and heard nothing but great things about Morris. I just want to rip this rebuilding period off like a bandaid and start anew next season with some great draft picks.

I wouldn't say Jags shot up the ladder quicker than Logan since Jags was under Logan for 4 years at ECU. When Jags left East Carolina, he became OC at BC. Logan could have gotten another HC'ing job after he was fired from ECU, but he wanted ECU to have to pay him for the remaining years left on his contract, and he couldn't get that money if he took another HC'ing job during that time span. He worked in NFL Europe during those years and had a radio show in Raleigh called the "Logan Zone".

Apparently he was unbelievably disorganized, had an extremely limited playbook and Olsen was calling the game anyways.

Makes you wonder what they saw in him when they made the hire, but I applaud the ability to recognize a mistake and get out from underneath it.

I still think the team is more talented than most give them credit for, but firing the OC the week before the season can't be taken as anything other than a bad thing.

I bet the guy wished he never interviewed for the Jets job.
I dunno. He got fired from BC, and since he didn't take another college job they may be on the hook for some of his contract. Then he got fired from the Bucs, who are on the hook for his 3-year deal.Seems like he's going to be doing pretty great to me.

rumor has it he's a tremendous doosh

True. Kind of ironic that coaching contracts are guaranteed while the players' are not.

But we're beginning to learn more details about how they came to realize they made a mistake. During the team's three preseason games, it became obvious Jagodzinski was struggling with the play-calling process. Calls were getting to the sideline too late and, as a result, the quarterbacks were not getting enough notice of the play call before the snap. The coaches in the booth are not permitted to speak directly to the quarterback through his helmet transmitter. Calls were instead relayed from the booth to Greg Olson -- he was on the sideline -- who then transmitted the play to the quarterback.

The process was disjointed and messy, and we can only imagine what kind of impact this might have had on the poor quarterback play we've seen to date. Given all the issues, it's hard to believe they had no effect.
On another note, one of the things we'll be watching in the coming weeks is the difference between Jagodzinski's approach and that of Olson, who was named his replacement on Thursday.

Based on his history and what we've been told about him in the past 24 hours, you should expect more effort to go vertical. It's in Olson's blood and he often urged Gruden to make more attempts to stretch the field. Of course, Jagodzinski promised more of a vertical offense, too, and we hadn't necessarily seen that in the preseason -- even if the team did appear to have more down field passing in its playbook based on offseason and training camp practices.

A lot of what I have been hearing goes back to the owner's lack of fundage. Sounds like they want to unload McCown to save some :goodposting: now. Pure speculation of course by many down here.
