WASH Pregame Report: Bryant In, Ward Out
Oct 04, 2009 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ passing attack is now in the hands of second-year quarterback Josh Johnson, who threw his first 10 regular-season passes last week. Johnson, making his first career start, will find the path to success much easier if the Buccaneers’ running game can get back on track.
A 174-yard rushing output in the season opener seemed to confirm the Buccaneers’ belief that the ground game would be the strength of their team in 2009. However, two less productive games have followed, partially due to circumstance. Early deficits in the Buffalo and New York Giants games have forced the team to throw the ball more than anticipated, and the offense as a whole never got untracked last week.
This week, it’s likely that the Bucs will try to get that running game back on track in order to take some pressure off Johnson in his starting debut. They’ll have to do so, however, without the services of Derrick Ward, one member of their three-headed rushing attack.
Ward sustained a knee injury against the Giants and did not practice all week. One of four players considered questionable to play in Sunday’s game, Ward has not yet made enough progress to suit up against the Redskins. Head Coach Raheem Morris still has the horses he needs, however.
“We’ll see primarily Cadillac Williams and Earnest Graham, sprinkled in with a little Clifton Smith,” said Morris. “Derrick will not be up this week. He won’t be available due to his knee issue, but hopefully we can get him back in the near future and get him going again. Earnest Graham was able to practice all week and participate in all the drills, so we’re feeling good about him.”
