Tampering Impact on TJack and '08 Vikes (1 Viewer)

Obviously no one knows what actually happened. But, if there actually are phone records with Childress (regardless of the "excuse"), I wonder what this will do to the psyche for the '08 Vikes and TJack in particular.

That sends a clear message that they lack confidence in the current QB. That much is obvious. It won't matter during training camp, etc. But, when we go through a rough patch during the season, the "endorsements" for TJack might start to ring a little hallow.

And the team will know it.

This could have much larger implications that are apparent at this point.

No impact. This is a running team. If Jackson gets his feelings hurt too badly then Booty comes in to hand the ball off 50 times a game.

I don't think it sends that message at all. There are only a handful of starting QB's that are currently better than an aging Favre. Bringing someone of Favre's caliber is not a statement that your current QB sucks, IMO.

Jackson not feeling pressure

July 16th, 2008 – 3:09 PM by Judd Zulgad

Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson knows he stands to play a significant role in the Vikings’ success, or lack of it, in 2008 but as he prepares to report to training camp Jackson seems to be taking an even-handed approach.

“I don’t feel any pressure, but I know it depends on how I play,” he said during an appearance on ESPN today. “The better I play the better chance we have to go deep in the playoffs and I know that. It’s the point of me just going in there and just letting it happen. No stress, no pressure. Just go in there and play football.”

Jackson went 8-4 last season in his first year as the Vikings’ starter but threw three more interceptions than touchdowns (12-9) and struggled at key times. He also did not prove as durable as the coaching staff would have liked, missing three games because of injury.

Even though there is no way the Packers are going to let disgruntled veteran Brett Favre end up playing for the Vikings, some have thrown out the possibility of the future Hall of Famer winding up in Purple. But coach Brad Childress said Monday that Jackson had an excellent offseason both on- and off-the-field and made it clear Jackson is his starter for 2008.

Jackson was happy to hear that.

“[it gives me] great confidence,” Jackson said. “I already had confidence in myself and [my] coaches and teammates. [but] just the caliber of player Brett Favre is anybody would be glad to have him.”

At one point in answering the first question, Jackson stopped short of saying Super Bowl even though it seemed to be on the tip of his tongue. “We just have to take it one game at a time,” Jackson said when asked about the fact he failed to mention the Super Bowl. “That’s our ultimate goal is to get to the Super Bowl but we have to take it one day at a time. We’re just going to take it one day at a time during training camp and then after that when we get to the regular season we’ll just take it one game at at time. We feel if we can do that we’ll be OK as a team.”

Sounds like its a no issue with Jackson and the Vikings

I don't this impacts Jackson at all.

I think the organization has shown plenty of support by not bringing in anyone to even compete with him for the starting job. It's his team and he has the opportunity to lead it to the playoffs.

I don't think Jackson can blame the Vikes for trying to land one of the best QB's the game has ever seen for the short term. Hell, he could learn a ton watching him play for a season. I think he knows that.

I agree, it's not like they were tampering with Rex Grossman.

If Jackson really is the answer at the position, the idea of the team bringing in Favre should motivate him to play well, not send him into a shell of self doubt. NFL players thrive on competition, they've been fighting for playing time their entire lives. It's nothing new.

Zero impact. If you have a chance to land someone of Favre's skills and talent you go for it if you are:

MIA, NYJ, BAL, TB, ATL, CHI, DET, MIN, KC

That doesn't show that you don't have faith in your current QB. It shows you saw a better QB than what you have on the market and you went for it. Jackson could use a year of tutoring.

The ramifications of the tampering will not aeffect them in 2008. It will, however, affect them in 2009 as they will most likely have to give up a draft pick. 49ers had to swap 3s with CHI... anything first day is a major blow, especially since MIN will be drafting top 10 next year :goodposting:

So what you're saying is that we should look at this as a ploy to motivate Tavaris Jackson? :goodposting:

Well, they tried to. They were going after Sage Rosenfels of the Texans, but didn't want to part with a 2nd rounder. He may break out this year, but I think he is still at least a year or two away from being a more then adequate starter -- hence the attempt to find a stop gap starter such as a Rosenfels.
