Tattoos have Jumped the Shark (1 Viewer)

Tattoos used to be cool.  Bikers, rock stars, and generally bada$$ dudes used to comprise the overwhelming majority of those who had one.  Now it seems everyone with a pulse has to get some ink.  The two latest incidents that caused me to shake my head were 1.  My wife's 70 year old aunt who decided to get one on her forearm, and 2.  The 18 year-old band geek I saw at a restaurant who had a full-sleeve mural of musical notes and the Miami Dolphins logo plastered on his scrawny, pasty-white arm.

So I ask the FBGs, when will this trend die?  Do we have to see our preschool teachers with neck and face tattoos before society realizes this is friggin' stupid?

This happened 10+ years ago.   Many people just didn't know it.
True.  The 'tramp stamp' trend began years ago, but that seemed to be relegated mostly to tramps.  Now it feels like we've moved beyond the tramps, and are overtaking the entire population.  I feel like a rebel for not having a tattoo at this point.

Where is your standard tattoo thread quote OPM?
Just because you live in a safe, sanitized, and boring little world where most of your men friends probably wear guy liner doesn't mean that there isn't another world inhabited by rough men that you just wouldn't understand or fit into.

You have an open invite to join me at the next gathering with my brothers in my MC, 100% of whom are tatted, many with full sleeves. I'll buy you a beer and a shot for each one of them you tell how "stupid" they look. You have to buy me a beer and a shot for each one that knocks out one of your teeth.

You're too much of a debutant to get a sleeve, and you feel uncomfortable around people who don't run in the same little metro circles that you do. Fine. I get it. Why the hatred of people who choose to live a different (and probably better) life than you though?

(Full disclosure: No sleeve. Yet. Just a single arm band with my MC's name in it on one arm, and the other shoulder inked with the unit I served with in Iraq. You wouldn't understand that group of men either.)

I was checking out at Walgreen's yesterday, and the checkout girl had tattoos of flowers all over her face and the word "SEX" tatted on her arm.  You know you have made some bad choices in life when you are foreclosed from reaching Eminence's level in the corporate hierarchy because of your tattoos.

Are you saying you are not for a little constructive criticism or am I misreading this?

Glad to see you don't feel uncomfortable around people who don't run in the same little tatted circles that you do.

Oh, wait....

I don't know that they've jumped the shark... it's just no longer a unique look. The people with a couple sleeves and a long beard just look like they're trying really hard. It kind of sucks for the originals because they are indistinguishable from all the lemmings that now inhabit the coffee shops and taverns of metropolitan areas.

God, the cringe still goes to 11.   what a fn idiot.

I don't know, seems like they've tapered off a bit.  Or maybe they've become so commonplace that I don't notice them as much?  I never got the whole craze to be honest.

Serious question for those of you that do have tattoos.  Why do you have them and what do you think about others that have them?

My auto-judgment assumes it's just ego-driven, attention seeking behavior.  Sure, there's the 'in memory of my dead son' tattoo, but there's also a lot more seemingly 'look at me' garbage out there.

Because it stands for who they are, man.

I have them because I like how it looks. Simple as that.

I have one full sleeve and working on my second. Some of the tattoos mean something, some are just images I like.

I care enough about what others think to cover up my tattoos at work even though I don't have to, but I don't care about what the rest of the world thinks of me and my tattoos.

I don't think other people with tattoos are cooler or that we're in some type of club. I do however judge the quality of the work they allow to be permanently placed on their body.

Having tattoos to me is no different then choosing a hairstyle, picking a tie, or finding a watch to wear.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I, for one, am shocked that chewing tobacco guy feels obligated to defend tattoos.

Except you can change all those other things daily.  ;)

This wasnt a reply to anything, so it's rather easy to think it's a reply to the general theme of thread in.

Sorry, I should have used the quote function, but I figured most would have had the same response to OPM's post.  Was ridiculous. Iff my post wasn't directly after his, I would have edited it to include his quote.

I have one on my leg (see avatar, kinda) and planning on getting #2 on my upper arm in the next few weeks.  Anything I ever get would have extreme importance to me and my family.  I don't care what other people think, quite honestly.  I simply like how they look on my body.  Quality of the tattoo is of paramount importance.  I'm not about to go to some trashy shop or not do extensive due diligence on the subject matter and artist.  It's probably why I waited so long for #1.  I had the general design in mind for close to a decade but it wasn't until my daughter was born and started liking a certain something (leaving details out here :oldunsure: ) that it finally made perfect sense for me.  Fortunately, as well, it allowed the "trend" to peak and perhaps dip a bit.  I think it jumped the shark years ago so I don't feel like I'm just "trendy".  I just like to wait until I'm 100% ready and satisfied with what's goin on me.

People are free to do what they choose, but there's gonna be a whole lot of skin pigment ugliness in nursing homes in about 30-50 years.

Way ahead of his time:

Grown men who get all emotional because someone else has ink on their arm is quite comical.

Even though I don't like tattoos I do like crazy piercings on hot chicks.  Really makes you wonder.
