Just got a text message from my good friend out with the Broncos today that Tatum Bell is running with the first team this morning. FYI.

good news at the very least. Question is how much did he run with first team in last year's camp? Also, IMHO Dayne is much less competition than Anderson.

I thought he did some first-team running last year (alternating with Andreson), only to falter miserably in the goal line drills.

But I agree that Dayne is probably not nearly as much of an obstacle as the do-it-all Anderson.

Broncos | Shanahan discusses wide open RB situation

Thu, 27 Jul 2006 19:20:20 -0700

Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan addressed the team's running back situation on the eve of training camp Thursday, July 27. "Yeah, it's wide open. That doesn't mean I'm trying to take away anything from what RB Tatum Bell's done or what RB Ron Dayne has done or a guy like RB Cedric Cobbs. All I'm saying is where there's not an established guy there from the year before, I'm mean wasn't a starter, I'm kind of wide open at that position."
Hmmmm....does Shanny saying "I'm kind of wide open at that position." mean things things have changed from when he was previously pegging Dayne for approx 2/3 of the carries & Bell for approx 1/3 of the carries?

Just got another text, said Bell was the only one to run with first team, Dayne ran 2nd team....bunch of scrubs cleaned up the other drills. Cobbs looked way out of shape and was seem dry heaving after running drills and RB's coach Bobby Turner was really dogging him.

But I agree that Dayne is probably not nearly as much of an obstacle as the do-it-all Anderson.
Am I missing something here? Didn't Mike Anderson sign with the Ravens? Is ther another Anderson on the roster that I don't know about?

Shannahan isn't a fan of RBBC, he prefers having a primary back. I think all the Dayne talk, was used as motivation for Bell, who needed to get stronger in conditioning to handle the load. Besides, I know well enough never to trust Ron Dayne to ammount to anything, see '04 Giants.

This would be very good news for me if it stuck.

If the shoe were on the other foot would we not by now have had a post that this was just a ploy to motivate the second string back?

Already had a post in THIS thread.
Yes, that's exactly correct. If it was Dayne, it would just be read as "motivational ploy."Shanahan said it was wide open. He's not going to give the job to either of them on the first day of camp.

That said, Dayne will win. So let's just sit back and watch things unfold.

HC Shanahan Pleased With RB T. Bell

Mike Klis, Bill Williamson, Denver Post - [Full Article]

HC Mike Shanahan likes what he has seen of third-year RB Tatum Bell, who is fighting for the starting job. "He has a sense of urgency about him," Shanahan said.
Code:
Shanahan is insane

From a reporter I know I was told the following:

Bell was running with the first team, he was last year as well look at how that turned out. He looked average and doesn't have very good vision. His pass catching has improved but he runs into blocks where he thinks the hole was supposed to be...even if it wasn't.

Dayne was running with teh second team. His body control was a bit shakey and he'd stumble a lot when guys pushed him.

Cobbs was nothing special.
Could this actually be the year that Denver fails to produce a 1k back?

Don't for a second think that Olandis Gary or Reuben Droughns were better commodities than Tatum Bell, not for a second.

Just talked to Jay Lufkin (old college buddy): and here is a brief summary of our conversation:

QB: Jake Plummer looked sharp. Was delivering the ball accurately and crisply in the 7-on-7 drills and continued with his precision passing on 11-on-11 drills. Doesn't appear to be fazed by Jay Cutler looking over his shoulder. Jay Cutler got some work in but looked shaky as one would expect a rookie to look. Champ Bailey picked him off twice when Cutler failed to put enough mustard on the ball.

RB: Tatum Bell was the rave of Day 1. Bell looked noticeably bigger and was in great condition. Bell ran exclusively with the first team and looked even more explosive than ever. He consistently ripped huge gains through the middle and outran defnders to the corner before cutting upfield for what would have easily been 10-15 yard gains. While Bell was focused and modest, you could see an air of confidence and swagger to him...something apparently Mike Shanahan liked because several people overheard him go up to Tatum Bell and ask him if he's ready to run for 1600. Bell was seen joking around with Plummer and Rod Smith as the second team got their reps. Ron Dayne looked solid, but unspectacular. Dayne ran with the second team and performed ok, had a case of fumbilitis for a while, but pulled himself together to finish the practice well. Dayne's conditioning looked ok, but he was noticeably winded after his drills. The dog of the day was Cedric Cobbs. He couldn't finish his conditioning drills, and Bobby Turner ripped him a new one. When Cobbs got some reps in he ran the wrong play, fumbled, and dropped an easy swing pass which set Mike Shanahan on fire. At this point, Cobbs looks like he'll be lucky to be carried on the practice squad. Cobbs was also limping after practice.

WR: Rod Smith is...Rod Smith...Mr. reliable. Made some smooth catches and continues to be Plummer's go-to-man. Smith burned Champ Bailey for what appeared to have been about a 25-30 yard TD. Javon Walker was present but didnt get much work in. Walker participated in the conditioning drills but not in the football drills. The plan must be to work Walker in slowly over the summer. Watts still has hands of stone. Had several drops from Plummer and later Cutler. This could be the end of Watts in Denver. Lelie was not present.

Hey I'm a Bell keeper league owner and even I can properly temper my enthusiasm. 1 day of practice folks...1 day

(still very encouraging news)

 I'm beginning to creep TBell *back* into my top-10 RBs as these kind of reports keep coming (I had him #8 in my original rankings, dropped him after the Dayne w/1st team news, but will crank him back up as TC progresses in this direction).

 Been saying from Day One that the only thing Dayne has proved while in the NFL is a complete LACK of starting RB talent. As I said in my face-off on Bell, just b/c Dayne's body type is more like Mike Anderson, that is no reason to attribute Anderson's 2005 numbers to him.

I'm not ready to make any drastic changes based on a single day of practice. But I am very interested in hearing Shanahan's press conference later today, and am also very interested in seeing if Bell keeps running with the first team all next week.Today's reports don't give us a lot to go on . . . but it's important to remember that "Dayne gets the Mike Anderson role, Bell is the change-of-pace guy" wasn't based on a lot either -- some offseason quotes comprising just a few sentences. So it shouldn't necessarily take a lot to revise our analysis of the situation.

In any case . . .

We catch a lot of stuff here pre-training camp about our pruning and protection of the Shark Pool, but once TC opens up, the value of keeping this board clean and concise - and related to NFL and fantasy news - becomes readily apparent.GO Training Camp!!!!!
