Tatum Bell - Trade Bait? (1 Viewer)

With Kevin Jones making a swift recovery from his Lis Franc injury, the Lions find themselves with a surplus of running backs (Jones, Bell, Duckett, Cason). Tatum Bell is in the final year of his contract and is almost a lock to be playing elsewhere in 2008. So if your the Detroit Lions, and the list of teams with dire needs at this position seemingly growing weekly, it makes sense to consider dealing Tatum Bell before the mid-October deadline.

Lions Insider Tom Kowalski suggests this is a distinct possibility in an interview this morning on WDFN. [MP3 File of Interview]

Tampa? Denver? Both teams could be seriously interested suitors for Tatum Bell.

Maybe with the emergence of Ward in NY, Denver could trade for both Tatum Bell and Reuben Droughns

Good idea, they need a veteran too, whats Mike Anderson doing in Baltimore? Maybe Ladell Betts should take over the reigns from Portis too.

Not sure why anyone would trade for him - he had only modest success in the Broncos' RB factory and struggled with the offensive-minded Martz.

It will be interesting to see how/if this plays out. But one would think if there is any truthiness to this rumor, Kevin Jones is going to be given pretty close to a full workload this weekend against Washington. If he can come through that game with no setbacks, that might be enough motivation for the Lions to actively shop Tatum Bell. An interesting sidebar to this, is that Denver and Detroit both have the same week 6 bye. So while this may be nothing more than pure speculation, a trade sending Tatum Bell back to Denver could materialize quickly following this week's games. This would give Shanahan almost 2 full weeks to re-integrate Bell into their offense which should be ample time given Bell's familiarity with their system. I'm not suggesting Bell would be the starter, but he sure would provide a much needed safety net should Selvin Young falter in the starter's role.

Depends how he is used. In a platoon system, he has shown that he can come in and hit the home run as well as anyone in the league. But, when you ask him to take a full load, he looses that punch. Plenty of teams would like to have that kind of explosivness in their backfield to completement another back. But at what price and whether anything actually gets done is another question.

Maurice Clarett is avaialble, too!

He'd be Barry Sanders compared to the crap the Packers have at RB. But it's pretty darn unlikely the Lions trade him to a division rival - especially given how RB may be the only thing separating the Packers from true contending status in the NFC.
