Helping my in-laws file their taxes. Both over 65, married, filing jointly in the state of Pennsylvania. They have less than $10k in income other than social security and other than medical (about $4k) no other significant deductions (retired, house paid off, etc). Is there any reason to file taxes for them since they paid none and owe none? Also, if you don't file federal taxes do you have to file state taxes anyway?

Thanks

Under current tax law, they will probably get back a million dollars.

File the taxes. It should be real easy and you can efile for free (probably).
