Taylor Mays (SF) (2 Viewers)

Saw this on Roto:

Reggie Smith-DB- 49ers Nov. 11 - 11:48 am et

49ers FS Reggie Smith will share snaps with Taylor Mays in Week 10.

Smith was the third safety at the beginning of the season, but Mays jumped past him and into the starting lineup when Michael Lewis was cut loose. Obviously it's a situation to avoid for IDP owners this week, though Mays hasn't made a major impact since entering the lineup, anyway.

I know Mays has not been great since taking over, but does anyone have any additional insight on this? Need to decide if I'm going to carry him for the year by next week, and to a lesser extend, start him this week.

Thanks

heres a note on T. Spikes (not sure if it makes any sense) or relevant

Nov 9 LB Takeo Spikes has been a pleasant surprise in coverage after taking over third-down duties from departed safety Michael Lewis. What Spikes, 34, has lost in speed he's made up for in savvy.

I dont like to be negative but imho its a no- and no (Free Safety pos has done well vs. the Rams). On a positive note, hes a Rookie and I know his name was mentioned in an audible not to far back (Gurus like what they have seen first hand)

Note: Bradford likes quick throws (doubt R. Smith makes any Big Plays) but SF should see plenty of SJax following his bye. It might pay dividends to listen for more input (even play Mays Sunday?) and listen to what the SF homers, Jene and others have to say based on Sunday's game.

If you checked T. Polamalu's Rookie Season you would find 29 solo's (no picks) and w/o a Sack until wk 13. The next Season almost 100 total tackles & 5 picks. In Mays 1st Season, he has already matched tackles & Forced Fumble, w a TD even. I cant really say the picks will come (sacks may) but we could see better play as a result of earning the position.

btw The part about sharing is also based on Mays playing Special Teams. This could lead to max snap counts, once Mays isnt playing out of position etc.

Not to sure I followed this response?Anyways, wish more had a good read on Mays going into today. Big zero from him may prove costly, for me anyways.

Same here... what happened? Anyone know?
Smith played much more than Mays in the first half. Saw Mays on the opening series of the second half. but it was mostly Smith again after that. Would expect that means that the Niners see Smith as a more consistent cover safety, which would make sense. We'll see how the rotation develops against the run heavy Bucs next week.

I dont like to be negative but imho its a no- and no (Free Safety pos has done well vs. the Rams). On a positive note, hes a Rookie and I know his name was mentioned in an audible not to far back (Gurus like what they have seen first hand) I might have misunderstood what you were asking, but I would say he may not be worth rostering for next yr, and probably not a good start Sunday. My second point is that I believe Mays was mentioned in an FBG audio track. Basically hes someone to watch/roster.

Bradford has had a few games with alot of passing, and the opposing teams Free Safety appeared to prosper. SJAX has a broken finger that I figured would have been healed enough to allow for a good performance rushing (usually Strong Safety prospers in this situation) Im not sure where I would figure the passing game to be, so I left it open for comment as to starting Mays (Strong Safety). My last point is in regards to the performance/snap counts of both Strong Safetys post play for keeper status

If you checked T. Polamalu's Rookie Season you would find 29 solo's (no picks) and w/o a Sack until wk 13. The next Season almost 100 total tackles & 5 picks. Here Im just comparing a full yrs worth of effort from a known Stud Strong Safety to basically 1/2 a Season. Im also trying to make reference to the premise that Mays might not a be a Ball-Hawk, but could still make big plays.

btw The part about sharing is also based on Mays playing Special Teams. This could lead to max snap counts, once Mays isnt playing out of position etc.
I imagine this part could sound confusing if Im not very enlightened as most, basically I do not believe very many starting Strong Safetys also play Special Teams (more snaps=more opportunity) Also the reasoning for Mays being given time on the bench is for extra rest to compensate for playing both D and Special Teams <--Coach Talk? Not to sure I followed this response?

Anyways, wish more had a good read on Mays going into today. Big zero from him may prove costly, for me anyways.
My apologies for a poorly worded response. Question: Do you have another player to consider? Is this a full out Dynasty League?

I personally only know of a handful of Strong Safetys I would want, but Mays still could top the list of players that Im not so sure about.

Again my apologies, I did not like his chances Sunday and really wish I had just stayed focused on that point.

EDIT: I just reread your post and realized you were saying carry for this yr. I thought discussion was on to keep for next yr.

I would seriously consider putting up a few names of players to discuss/rank. IF you can play any DB position, I would recommend Dimitri Patterson BUT only if you have a known starter to replace him with if needed. Hobbs play was suspect vs. K Britt and now news of injury has Patterson starting (I see a good schedule for a playmaker) This is just a quick answer but SS William Moore has some potential matchups Again hard to say not knowing whose available
