Week 17 Dynasty Risers and Fallers: A.J. Dillon flashes incredible upside

RISER: TE DONALD PARHAM, LOS ANGELES CHARGERS

Hunter Henry has been serviceable this year but hasn’t done much to earn a new contract with the Chargers if there is a significant market for him in the offseason.

This season, he’s outside the top 20 tight ends (min. 30 targets) in receiving grade, yards after the catch per reception and passer rating when targeted. If Parham is able to go in Week 17, it will be a chance for the Chargers to evaluate what they have in the receiving room if Henry walks. Parham was a massively athletic and highly productive small-school prospect before making his way to the XFL. Through five games, he ranked top five in receptions, touchdowns and receiving yards among all players. His 68.8 receiving grade was also first among tight ends (min. 15 targets).

Based on his athleticism and history of production, Parham has a path to becoming the next Logan Thomas or Darren Waller. He needs to be stashed in the most shallow of dynasty leagues.

Donald Parham caught 2-of-3 targets for 47 yards in the Chargers' Week 16 win over the Broncos. 

With Hunter Henry (COVID-19) sidelined, The 6'8" XFL legend played 81 percent of the Bolts' offensive snaps, getting 20 snaps in the slot or out wide. It was the perfect usage for those who streamed Parham, but didn't generate a whole lot of opportunity. Stephen Anderson, who caught four of six targets for 48 yards, operated as the team's top pass catching tight end with Henry out. Anderson would seem to be the safer streaming option in Week 17 if Henry can't return from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Picked up Parham in dynasty ahead of his likely start this weekend. The Chargers pass-catchers future’s are bright.

I picked him up after his performance in Week 13. He looked good on a narrow touchdown miss that week, I think. There's been some discussion of him over in the stash thread. I'm doing so, but don't know if I can protect him when winnowing a team down to forty protected. That's a tough one.

 
I stashed him on a few of my dynasty teams toward the end of the year thinking he could become a thing. Like Rock said he will be a tuff hold on my short roster fpc lgs but he does look pretty good to me.

 
Mentioned him in the old XFL thread. He was a small school all american.

He's huge and DBs in the NFL seem to be getting smaller (5-10) not taller. At 6-8 with decent wheels and great hands, with plenty of football experience....ya gotta figure he's going to pan out.

Earlier this year, the Chargers put him in a couple times and he caught two TDs like a secret weapon in the red zone. He's been a known commodity since then. After Virgil? went down, he has played the blocking TE role and not much work as a receiver.

He's also lined out wide and at FB so that does show his athleticism some. 

This is a strong off-season for TEs but most haven't produced as expected. The Chargers might be able to afford to re-sign their TE. It actually hurts Parham that Henry hasn't done well.

Maybe I missed something, or this is a joke, but Parham is a good end of bench speculation, not a TE that is ranked anywhere near would you put him.. There are many TEs you didn't mention that I would take before him.  Where is Andrews, Tonyan, Hunter, Gesicki, Fant, Goedert, and others?, in addition to 3 TE rookies (Pitts, Freirmuth, and Jordan).  If that was a joke, sorry I didn't get it.

There was never really a doubt the Chargers were going to sign a veteran TE, but at this point in his career, does anyone think Cook presents an insurmountable piece to the offense?  I think this is a significant enough signing that the Chargers may not seek additional help, and that leaves the door open for Parham, if he can impress enough to walk through it, and it also provides a veteran presence to mentor Parham as he develops.  There is still a long way to go before training camp rosters are solidified, but things are looking pretty good for Parham right now, imo.

Totally agree...Cook is exactly what you want if you own Parham in Dynasty as he is not a long term threat to him...there was no way LA was going to totally commit to the kid right now, that would be foolish as he has not shown enough...in Cook you have a veteran that allows Parham time to still develop and hopefully emerge as their main TE...I would be way more concerned if they brought in a Friermuth or a Jordan because that would hurt his value far more in the long run.

Yeah if Parham is any good he should be able to pass a 34-year old Cook, but even in that case vet TEs have an annoying habit of taking a lot of snaps. 

I haven't to this point been all that excited about Parham. He's a guy I've stashed for free in a few TE premium leagues, but I really am not convicted that he's not just going to be another Rico Gathers. I was planning to sell some of those shares for a quick profit if he looked like the unchallenged starter going into the year, so I'm more bummed at the perception. But as you guys have mentioned, that was a pretty unlikely scenario to play out. So at this point, I think he's worth holding to see if he's good enough to beat Cook, but maybe not much more. 

 
The Orange County Register's Gilbert Manzano expects Chargers TE Donald Parham to see an expanded role on offense this season.

Parham, who stands at 6-foot-8, appeared in 13 games for the Bolts last season but was mainly used as a red-zone specialist on jump balls. He turned his 20 targets into an impressive 10-159-3 line but used the offseason to hone his skills. Coaches and teammates have noticed his route running has sharpened up, and the Chargers are working to get the ball in Parham's hands more in the open field this summer. Parham has been running with the first-team offense and even spent part of the offseason working out with Justin Herbert to improve their chemistry. With Hunter Henry gone, Parham has a real chance to make some noise in the passing game and red zone. Jared Cook was signed as a veteran option, but he's 34. Parham turns 24 in two weeks. He's a name to remember.

Chargers give improved Donald Parham Jr. a bigger role

COSTA MESA — Donald Parham Jr. didn’t have many opportunities to gain receiving yards as a red-zone specialist for the Chargers last season. 

Parham’s role will likely expand this season because the 6-foot-8 tight end has done a lot of running with the ball in his hands through the first seven practices of training camp. 

He’s gone from just seeing jump balls in the end zone as a mismatch nightmare to a yards-after-catch playmaker for quarterback Justin Herbert. 

“He’s a speedy guy,” Chargers tight end Jared Cook said about Parham. “I think he has the fastest time from what we’ve heard on the scanners this week. He’s done a good job of just opening up running. Big guy, big target.” 

Parham said he didn’t like the way he finished his first season with the Chargers last year and focused this offseason on building lower body strength and improving his knee movements. That has led to Parham improving as a route runner and getting open in space. 

Parham also credited his improvements to the chemistry he built with Herbert in the offseason.

“We spent a lot of time over the offseason making sure that we got together and threw a little bit,” Parham said. “We wanted to get it together this upcoming season, so we can make big plays all year.” 

Parham has kept pace with Cook as one of Herbert’s favorite targets in practice, but Parham isn’t just seeing more opportunities because of his athleticism and size. He’s made strides as a blocker and that could lead to more snaps this season. 

Last season, Parham saw only 20 targets and recorded 10 receptions for 159 yards and three touchdowns.

“I have really no other choice but to get better at it,” Parham said about blocking. “I definitely make that a point in my practice when I get those reps to make sure that I’m going hard and practicing good habits.” 

Tight ends coach Kevin Koger said he’s noticed many improvements with Parham since joining the Chargers’ staff this year. 

“He’s a better athlete than you would think for a guy that’s 6’7, 6’8,” Koger said. “He has a good set of feet on him. He’s able to bend better than a lot of other 6’8 guys, but that’s (just) one of his strengths.”

I've got him on both of mine.  All the ingredients are in play. It'll take awhile this year with Cook ahead of him, but I'm shocked at how completely ignored he is. I can't think of another TE with such upside just sitting on wires.

No mention in this thread that the Chargers drafted TE McKitty in the third round. It seemed that they reached to do it, and they clearly liked him a lot based on their comments about him.

The Chargers also have a lot of competition for targets. Allen is a target hog. Williams is making $17M and could get a career high in targets. The rest of their WR depth is really good — they will be cutting multiple good WRs. And they have possibly the best receiving RB in Ekeler. 
 

As a Chargers fan, I hope all of the optimism about Parham proves to be warranted, but it feels over the top to me.

He's gotta get his chance to start.(and maybe more than one) Cook's older so he'll probably miss a game for this or that at some point. 

It won't happen for anyone at any position unless they start.

Lot of good quotes this summer and even one in season...wait this out

 
Obviously it's only 4 games into this season, but Cook has looked good. He only has 1 TD, but had another TD called back. I think the Chargers set themselves up to let him walk after this season, leaving them with two young TEs in Parham and McKitty, plus veteran Anderson. But it would be a bit foolish for the Chargers to go into next season with just those three at TE, given how unproven that group is. Unless Cook gets hurt and forces Parham and/or McKitty to play more snaps and prove themselves, the most likely outcome to me right now is the Chargers re-sign Cook to another 1 year deal.

 
I believe Parham will eventually be big-time with Herbert. His blocking has improved a ton so he's likely to be their starter when Cook moves on, if not before.

Parham's athletic ability along with his 6'8" frame is a deadly combo. If he develops close to his potential, look out. Super-high ceiling.

 
BTW, looks like Parham could be a thing THIS season. I thought I noticed him in there about as much as Cook this week and after checking, that's the case (they both played 39 snaps).

Parham is easily the best TE stash in FF right now, IMO (by stash I mean a young non-starter).

Donald Parham caught both of his targets for 29 yards and one touchdown in the Chargers' Week 5 win over the Browns.

Parham caught a 22-yard touchdown to get the scoring started for the Chargers in the first quarter. He's now scored in back-to-back games as a red-zone dominator at 6-foot-8. Parham has five catches on the season, scoring on two of them. He's not yet playing enough to be a fantasy option.

I’m glad I’ve got him stashed on benches all over my leagues, initially purely because he was coming out of Stetson and that was just kind of cool to me 😊

 
Randomly added this guy end of last season in my dyno, not sure why then... probably my love of big receivers, just took a shot.

Like him a lot. Cook is old and on a one year deal. Obviously Parham is nice in redzone, looks fairly mobile. Hoping they see him as next guy up. Have only seen him toward the redzone though, can he hack it between the 20s?

I like Tremble, but Parham has a higher ceiling, both physically & situationally. Hard not to be super excited about a TE with Parham's physical traits not to mention being paired with Herbert.

Parham is playing close to the same number of snaps as Cook right now so it won't be a big surprise if he overtakes Cook and becomes the starter this season. I expect a breakout no later than next season.

I agree with you on Parham.  He is in a great situation, and his ceiling is very high.

Tremble could see his role expand, and perhaps overtake his team's lead TE spot this season as well.  While Tremble does not have the crazy height and wingspan of Parham, he is incredibly athletic and versatile.

I have Parham rated slightly higher for Dynasty rankings, but it is very close for me.  I would happily roster either.

 
I've been touting him since XFL as have some others. Last year the Chargers used him as a red zone weapon and he caught a few TDs then they watched their free agent starting TE walk. That's all they're doing now.  

He has way more snaps than last year, but as their blocking TE in a 2 TE set. 

They're really taking a page from the Titans who took it from Gibbs. Notice Ekeler is catching more and playing better. Parham isn't getting many(any some weeks) targets between the 20s but he's bringing a defender with him on his route. 

He's got like a Cris Carter curse or some weirdness- all he does is catch TDs- and we need him to get the targets between the 20s.

I'm still waiting (God Bless, but it happens) for Cook to get dinged and Parham to get a start

 
Got him back on my roster thankfully. One other claim, but luckily for me the guy who made the other claim has RW and used his first claim on Geno. :D  Needless to say it was the sole claim for him.

I'm gonna try my best to hold ROS. Having a key piece of that Chargers offense in 2022 beyond will be nice.

 
The Athletic's Daniel Popper said TE Donald Parham "could certainly see his target share increase" going forward. 

The Donald Parham Truthers Association has convened an emergency meeting. The former XFL star has all of seven targets through five games but scored a 22-yard touchdown last week against the Browns and continues to look like the Chargers' most explosive pass-catching tight end. Parham, thanks to heavy two tight end usage in the LA offense, has been on the field for 50.3 percent of the team's snaps through five weeks. Jared Cook has seen a 60.9 percent snap rate. A little more involvement in LA's passing attack this week could pay off for Parham against a Baltimore defense that's been terrible against tight ends in 2021.

Donald Parham caught all three of his targets for 39 yards in the Chargers' Week 9 win against the Eagles. 

Parham ran a pass route on 34.8 percent of Justin Herbert's drop backs against Philadelphia. Jared Cook, meanwhile, ran a route on 53.4 percent of Herbert's drop backs and caught all four of his targets for 48 yards. The hyper-athletic Parham continues to play behind Cook. He hasn't seen more than three targets in a game this season.
