Team Defenses 2009 (1 Viewer)

I know PIT and the NYG are probably the first 2 defenses off the board this year, in my league I'm sure of it. After those two I will have a hard time spending anything but a middle to late round pick on a defense. BAL and TEN were strong last year but Haynesworth is gone and didn't the NYJ sign about half of the Ravens this off season? Are there any potentially sleeper defenses out there worth discussing here in April? Obviously we have a draft, TC and more FA activity that will affect every team as they make their cuts in pre-season. So from 5 months out who has at least caught your eye either based on how they finished '08 or what they have done personnel wise in the off-season? Thanks and I hope this can be a good discussion.

Edited to note: when I said FF wise I should have clarified I am looking at teams tough to score on with higher propensities for sacks, ints and fum recs.

and I think the jets only signed scott and leonhard.

kind of doubt that leonhard signing will turn them into baltimore.

I expect SD (with Merriman back) and NE (with the signings and Brady back) to rebound back to the top six or eight. Also, it is tough to argue with the Jets. They finished well last season, then get Ryan and some former Raven defenders. Those are the three i like this year.

SD is intriguing. If Merriman is 100% then they become great value. I think you have to include the Jets but I am concerned about their QB. If the offense sputters then the defense is going to be on the field too much by mid-season to be strong down the stretch. I can't pick NE as I am franchising Brady. If he gets hurt I lose on both counts. How about Chicago with presumably a better offense that can score a few more points per game with Cutler?

Crap, I was about to say the Jets, but they seem to be on everyone's radar today, so I can only imagine what folks will be thinking 4 months from now. I do like ImTheScientist's thought on the Bears as ofr the first time, in well forever, they will be a true two-headed monster on offense, so that D should have as light of a load as they have ever had.

Newsflash: You shouldn't be spending anything but a late round pick on a defense anyway. They are far too unpredictable. Sacks, interceptions and fumble recoveries are random events that can not be predicted. :2cents:

Is the hype and luster now off the Minnesota defense enough that they can be aquired for better value this year?

I think they were nearly the consensus # 1 defense last year, and then didn't perform up to expectations, correct?

I like San Diego to bounce back this year, and the Jets are assembling some talent on that side of the ball - the big concern there is the offensive issues - could be a lot of minutes logged for that unit if the offense can't sustain drives.

for me the vike defense was never that great for me. i did not have them and i had them ranked like 4th, but still getting allen did not make their CBs into champ bailey. now with rosenfels i do not know if i like them any better. he will either turn the ball over a bunch making them have extra time on the field or be jay cutler esque. i do not trust their QBs i do not trust the D. i have them up there but still not #1. maybe the pats, i still like the titans, pitt is always good, maybe the bills they are underestimated, now with T.O. they might have the ammo to keep off the field. have not looked too mucha at the Ds the draft will determine alot.

Depends on the league scoring of course. Any league that accounts for points scored against will cause DEF/ST to be valued more and therefore warrant a higher draft pick. For instance, our league starts with 30 points for the DEF/ST and subtracts only the points given up by the DEF/ST plus sacks, ints, fum recs. So clearly the tougher to score on DEF/ST are worthy of a higher than lower round pick.

If Childress would have used ADP on 3rd downs every once in a while and not let him take whole quarters off the friggen Viking Defense wouldn't have had to take the field. Thank god I'm not a Viking fan that coach would ruin my Sundays.
