For years the Colts won as a 'top-heavy' team, cash paid to Peyton and other top level players, but lots of bit players and limited depth.
Today, the Lions have a ton of cash wrapped up in Stafford, Calvin and Suh, all fortunately good picks. However, it seems like it's just a matter of time before they can't afford to pay all those guys. I also wonder if it restricts them from doing everything they need to do to build a competitive team with depth. STL is another team that comes to mind with lots of money tied up in high draft picks.
Further, with the new CBA, teams now picking high can get highly drafted rookies for 4-5 years on the cheap. Seems like a huge advantage for teams that are not laden with 1st round rookies drafted under the old CBA.
So, here's the question. Are there teams that just can't afford to get better for a few years, and are they just waiting to get gutted when they can no longer afford their stars? At that point, they will essentially have to rebuild unless they are drafting smart now. Are these teams to avoid in Dynasty?
