Technics - SL1200s...Mrs wants to buy a set along with an Xone:92 mixer (1 Viewer)

This isn't a problem on the surface but my wife seems to think we can start a 2nd career by grabbing a set of these and putting together a show to play out around town, wherever it leads
-Mrs has become obsessed with them ever since I showed her this YT station I was streaming called the Mudd Show
A lot of their recent entries for DJ continuous mixes involve vinyl and obviously some old school wax from the 90s, 80s and even 70s disco era.
It must have triggered something but I do want to also share that I put her thru DJ school a couple years ago on those Pioneer/MusicBox, but we lost interest because it's way too easy to just open up the Macbook and line the beats up, you just hit a button kind of like a video game. Lost a lot of respect for festivals and DJs that make their living playing techno at super fast speeds all pre-programmed or planned out with no spontaneous vibe or nothing and then suddenly we started finding younger DJs that were dusting off 90s vinyl, some of which we already have from the good old days, but these DJs are mixing records from way back.

-Let me share, this is on par or no different than the guy that wants a full standing Donkey Kong arcade game or Terminator 2 pinball machine, it's something you could never have when you were a kid and even though you really are too old to enjoy it the same way, the inner kid desires it and starts to override logic

-One more thing that seems to drive part of this, we lived in Los Angeles and we landed in Los Feliz where the famous Dresden Lounge is and for the longest time they had a male/female husband/wife duo called Marty and Elaine and I think she wants to somehow take the 90s dance catalog and play it out around town where they seem to lack any creativity for music or even have a theme night and let it grow.

We are in the middle of re-doing our home and I think she would like to set the turntables up and build out a sound studio we can both enjoy
She/we might even have a name picked out we would go by for this fantasy that is going nowhere
She wants us to be able to set up turntables and run everything ourselves at local spots, the music is a big escape from her M-F gig and I want to be supportive
I rarely see a married couple play as a DJ tandem B2B on the wheels of steel so I do feel she is thinking outside the box to spice up our marriage

The turntables run about $1,000 a piece fyi, the mixer closer to $2,000, add in a set of monitors or maybe new speakers and we quickly get up to about $5,000 for this fantasy that i think ends with 2 turntables and a mixer collecting dust after about a year. We used to have turntables in the 90s in Tampa/St Pete so it's not like we never had them. However back in those days I was mostly a pawn shop for DJs to use their tables as collateral for short term loans and so I always had a set of them in my house to use for parties, etc...

We like this guy a lot

I'm pleased to report that the girls are kicking the boys' butts when it comes to 90s wax and all vinyl sets right now

Turntables are awesome. 1200s guy here. Lugging around DJ equipment and vinyl certainly isn't. If you're not playing at clubs/bars with the equipment in place, it's not worth the effort to set all that stuff up. It'll get old quickly. Hell, even lugging around the records gets tired. And most bars really don't care about the craft, they just want you to bring patrons/music whatever way that happens. So you need to build a following, social media presence, etc or just getting booked will be task.

Also DJing is like learning a musical instrument and vinyl takes lot of practice - blending, beat matching and most importantly the ability to read a room. You can't just sit up there playing the same stuff for yourself like you do in your living room. It's harder than it looks. Unless, you're going for the we only play vinyl schtick, you'll definitely need Serato which I came to appreciate. There are also plenty of quality digital DJ set ups that are a one piece and great for portable gigs. Had friends bring these to street parties, plug into speakers and go - https://www.pioneerdj.com/en-us/product/all-in-one-system/xdj-xz/black/overview/. Some even have bluetooth. I was impressed.

Technology is cool but I'll always have an affinity for vinyl. My friend's bar does this well and caters to vinyl DJs: http://www.theflathouston.com/
