WEEI and the patriots website reported that Ted Johnson retired today. That leaves the patriots one more veteran short in the middle of their defense.

What do you think of the possibility that Roosevelt Colvin starts on the outside and Vrabel moves inside? I just suggested it as a possibility in the daily news update, so I hope it's not too far-fetched.

It's a definite possibility, but IIRC they kept Vrabel at OLB in all of their OTAs this year and moved Chad Brown inside on occasion, so I'm guessing he might be more likely to see time in inside.I think we'll find out more once training camp begins. If this news caught them offguard, they may make more drastic changes than they were planning on before.

That's what I was thinking soon after Bruschi suffered the stroke, and sure enough, he has been getting a lot of reps there. Belichick has called him one of the smartest players he's ever coached, so I'm thinking Vrabel, Beisel, and Chad Brown will be playing inside (with Phifer still a possibility) with Colvin and McGinest on the outside.
