Ten Most Talented WRs in the NFL (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
I'm not asking for your top 10 FF WR's, or the ten most productive WR's. I'm asking for the top ten most talented WRs, the players who have the talent to make plays that make your jaw drop.

My list:

1. Moss - even at 32, he is still the most freakishly gifted WR in the NFL

2. Calvin - this guy's talent is through the roof - size, strength, speed, leaping ability - he has it all, but still waiting for him to put it all together

3. Fitz - not a burner, but has a bigger catch radius than anyone perhaps in NFL history; great ball skills and body control, strength, and the surest hands in the NFL

4 AJ - a little bit of Fitz, a little bit of Calvin; was tempted to put him ahead of Fitz, but what Fitz does better, he does a lot better, and this is not a knock on AJ - just a testament to how good Fitz is

5. Marshall - this might seem a little high, but Marshall is a beast; decent speed, amazing leaping ability, size, strength, and ball skills, and incredible YAC ability

6. Steve Smith (Car) - still among the elite when it comes to pure talent; incredibly strong for his size, great hands, speed, and ball skills and incredibly dangerous after the catch

7. Desean Jackson - freakishly fast, sure handed, and as dangerous in the open field as anyone in the league

8. Percy Harvin - I know it's early, but I've seen enough of this kid to know that his talent is immense; a lot like Smith, incredibly fast, deceptively strong for his size, great ball skills and very dangerous in the open field; he's still developing, it's scary to imagine how good this kid will be

9. VJax - big, fast, and strong; a fantastic deep threat and a great red zone option; a bit of a cross between Fitz and AJ, albeit not in either of their leagues... yet

10. Colston - I think this guy's talent is incredibly underrated; not a burner, but like Fitz has an amazing catch radius; fantasy leaping ability and ball skills and has a knack for the endzone

Honorable Mention: Ocho Cinco, Wayne, Roddy White, Boldin, Sidney Rice

I'm sure many (most?) will disagree. So, tear my list apart, list yours, let's get the debate rolling...

Not a bad list; I'd probably put Andre Johnson # 1 and Moss # 2. Also would have Sidney Rice in the top 10. While I think Steve Smith (Car) is a great receiver, I always thought him more of an over-achiever than just a raw talent guy. Maybe its a Detroit bias but I'm not quite as sold on Calvin Johnson. Top 10 maybe but definitely not 2. My sleeper? Devery Henderson, who has led the NFL in yards/target and yards/catch the past 2 years. And what about TO? He's as good after the catch as anyone. He just hasn't caught many this year. Santonio Holmes would also be another for consideration. My overachievers: Donald Driver, Steve Smith, Wes Welker, Kevin Walter, Hines Ward, Derrick Mason

Reggie Wayne belongs on this list and not hon mentioned. I'm really starting to believe that no one playing today has better hands than he does

I like you list. I'd take Harvin off the top 10 and put Roddy White in there instead. I'd probably put Wayne on the list instead of Colston. I'd also add Greg Jennings to the Honorable Mention list.

1. Moss

2. AJ

3. Fitz

4. Calvin

5. Marshall

6. Sidney Rice

7. Wayne

8. Smith (CAR)

9. Colston

10. V. Jackson

11. Ocho

In no particular order:

Moss, Calvin, Fitz, AJ and possibly Steve Smith (although I think he may have lost something this year).

Everyone else is a clear step (at least) below.

Does Sidney Rice really even belong in the discussion?

He's talented sure, but I don't think I'd put him near the top 10 yet. Seems to me like Favre is driving up his value right now...

1- Fitz- does it all

2- AJ- does it all, but not quite as good as Fitz

3- Steve Smith(Car)- No better WR in the open field

4- Wayne, best route runner of this list

5- Moss

6- Marshall

7- Ocho

8- V-Jax

9- Hines Ward, blocking & intangibles are part of being a WR too

10-Calvin. Durability & playing hurt are part of the game

I wonder how long before Crabtree is on this list? Just watching him a few times and I already like his game

That is what it looks like but Rice has the talent and the injury bug and lackluster QB play held him back. Favre is letting him use his talent to make plays where Tarvaris would not do that.

What I mean is that he's sure handed and he's making plays right now. BUT, from what I've seen he lacks good YAC ability and his ease at getting open this season could be a byproduct of teams not being able to focus on him (as opposed to his route running and separation ability). Adrian Peterson and Percy Harvin add dimensions to the Vikings offense that make it virtually impossible for defenses to account for every Viking playmaker on each play.I think a lot of Rice's success has to do with just how good the rest of the Vikings offense is and not necessarily Rice being a dominate force at WR. Top WRs will consistently make plays in spite of double coverage and in the face of gameplans built to stop them. I just don't see how you can put Rice in that category yet.

We do not have nearly enough information to determine if Sidney Rice belongs on this list, therefore he does not.

Donald Driver

Was a late round pick but was actually considering the Olympics before dedicating to football full time. Has always been a good player, and he's as good now as he's ever been. Is he physically imposing like Johnson or Jackson? No. But his balance, strength, speed, and overall athletic ability allow him to rack up season after season of great play.

He's the Packers all-time leading receiver now and doesn't look close to hitting the wall any time soon.

Not a bad list; I'd probably put Andre Johnson # 1 and Moss # 2. Also would have Sidney Rice in the top 10. Devery Henderson is a 1-trick pony. Granted, he's definitely the best at that one trick in the entire NFL. He might even be the best 1-trick pony in the entire league. He's sort of the anti-Welker. He's a tremendously valuable role player and a great asset to that offense. None of this changes the fact that he really only has one NFL-caliber skill as a WR.
Does Sidney Rice really even belong in the discussion? He's talented sure, but I don't think I'd put him near the top 10 yet. Seems to me like Favre is driving up his value right now...
He definitely belongs in the discussion. I'm holding off on elevating him that much until I can actually watch him play for myself some more (haven't caught many Vikings games, sadly), but I loved him as a prospect and he's really dominating the league so far this year.As for my list... I don't pretend to be an NFL scout, but here's how I see it:#1 with a bullet- Larry Fitzgerald. An NFL WR's job description is very simple- there are really only two requirements. The first is "get open", and the second is "catch the ball". Larry Fitzgerald is the best WR in the league at getting open. He runs the sharpest, most precise routes in the league, and he has the size/strength/speed/leaping ability to physically outclass any defender unlucky enough to draw him in coverage. Larry Fitzgerald is also the best WR in the league at catching the ball. He's the quickest I've seen at finding and recognizing the ball in flight, he consistently maintains focus until the ball is in his hands, and he's a prototypical hands-catcher (even more, a fingertips-catcher). He might not provide the sexy plays of a Moss, Calvin, or Andre, but nobody in the league today gets the job done better.#2- Randy Moss.Still the best I've seen at tracking the ball in flight and timing his leap to get the ball at the highest point. His physical advantages let him get away with sometimes sloppy or lazy play. For my money, he has the largest catch radius in the league- get it in the same zip code as him, and he's coming down with it.#3- Andre Johnson. Not as physically gifted as Moss or Calvin, not as consistent as Fitzgerald, but he reminds me a lot of a younger Terrell Owens in terms of his physicality and his ability to enter "beast mode" at will. He really needs to work on presenting a bigger target in traffic, especially in the red zone.#4- Calvin Johnson. In terms of measurables, Calvin should be the clear #1 in the league today. He's got great size, great speed, great leaping ability, and great hands. He's dedicated to his craft rather than simply relying on his superior athleticism. With that said, I still haven't seen enough consistency or killer instinct to put him over the three guys ahead of him. Get back to me in 2 years.#5- Vincent Jackson.Sort of a walking contradiction. Among the best in the league at adjusting to a ball in flight, which makes him one of the top 5 WRs in the league on deep balls. Massive size, strength, and leaping ability, which makes him one of the top 5 WRs in the league at manufacturing space in traffic. He really has an incredibly diverse skillset almost unmatched in the league today (Moss has it, and Calvin has the potential although he's yet to distinguish himself enough in the red zone). He's a weapon on any route and from any point of the field. All he needs now is a bit more selfishness.#6- Smiff. The prototypical "waterbug" WR. He's short, he's fast, he's physical, and he's LETHAL in tight spaces. Like all elite punt returners, he has the ability to put on moves to make a guy miss "in a phone booth". He's too tough to jam, too fast to give a free release, and too shifty to give a cushion. His best attribute of all is that unbelievable mean streak. All dominant receivers have it to some degree or another (and an underdeveloped mean streak is what's keeping VJax and Calvin down right now), but nobody in the game has it like Steve Smith. The same disfunctional personality that led to Smiff punching his own teammate is also what makes him such a nightmare for opposing defenses. He remains to this day the only guy I have ever seen a defense consistently TRIPLE COVER.#7- Brandon Marshall.Another big physical WR. He's Andre Johnson with better RAC skills, or Terrell Owens with better hands. Great size, great hands, very good speed. He could potentially be much higher, but he doesn't devote himself to his craft as much as the other guys, relying instead on his superior athleticism to gain separation and make plays once he has the ball in his hands. After those 7, it starts to get really hard to rank, so I'll just give a top 7. After that, you've got a lot of guys who are great receivers, but not dominant talents, as well as other guys who are potentially dominant but who haven't put it together consistently enough yet. Guys like Wayne, Ochocinco, Lee Evans, Desean, Sidney Rice, Roddy White, Marques Colston, and MSW. I'm sure I'm forgetting some, too.

We do not have nearly enough information to determine if Sidney Rice belongs on this list, therefore he does not.
The guy is catching 71% of the targets thrown his way. He's averaging over 12 yards/target. There's no question he belongs in the discussion right now. I can see people leaving him off the top ten, but he is an immensely talented receiver and the scary part is he's only 23. Favre doesn't make the receiver, he just gives them the opportunity.

Ochocinco should be on all of these lists.

The way he runs his routes is unbelievable and unlike many others in the league. Many corners in the league believe he's one of the most difficult guys to cover.

wow. another thread to debate where vincent jackson rates. i'll be in here regularly.

seriously, though, fitzgerald is no. 1 IMO. wayne belongs in the top 5 not HM. like your call of Desean Jackson. I think he's the better Jackson to own.

How is Sidney Rice getting all this attention and Reggie Wayne getting virtually none?

At this point what does Rice have that Wayne doesn't have? (Apart from age...which shouldn't be a factor here anyways)

I don't see how his performance over the last 9 games (he put up 5 catches for 46 yards in week 1-2) elevates any player to the level of Moss, Fitz, Calvin and AJ. Those guys are clearly the most physically gifted WRs in the game.Sidney needs to show a little more before he enters this conversation.

I'm not saying Rice is top ten - don't think he is - but I am saying that Favre is part of the reason that he is having a good year but not the ONLY reason.Personally, I would put Harvin in the top ten. He is Steve Smith without the resume. Just because he hasn't been in the league as long doesn't mean he isn't as talented. He is a GOOD route runner, has great hands, and is one of the best in running after the catch. I can't believe that the Vikings haven't sent him deep on routes yet - that is what we will see in the final 1/4 of the season.

1. Andre Johnson

2. Larry Fitzgerald

3. Reggie Wayne

4. Randy Moss

5. Calvin Johnson

6. Steve Smith

7. Vincent Jackson

8. Brandon Marshall

9. Chad Johnson

10. Marques Colston

this thread seems like it should be 10 most physically talented. physically Vjax would be top 4barnun. he's Randy with 1/2 the skill level

Reggie Wayne's "talent" or skill level trumps everyone else on the list. he can't run/burst/jump like anyone on the list but he's the single most unstoppable WR in the league at this moment. its just not the peyton factor...........the guy is just always open and has shown chris carter hands and sideline/end-zone feel with his feet. his route running/setup moves/zone hole finding/redirection skills are off the charts. and his hands once again are ridiculous. Fitz makes unbelievable catches but mostly they are the body contorting/control/amazingly graceful jump ball kind. Reggie makes the outstretched arms on the fingertips/falling out of bounds type catches look routine.

i agree with most of the lists given. guys like Wayne/Welker should be on this list............. i mean if nobody can come close to slowing them down they obviously have incredible talent even tho it may not be in the great combine sense

A rookie after only half a year is above Wayne and I would add Greg Jennings even after this injury filled year.

I would have AJ

Moss

Wayne

Fitz

Calvin

Welker

Colston

Vincent Jackson

Marshall

Jennings

I am still thinking about my list but I agree about Reggie Wayne. At this time is his career he as complete a WR as there is in the game. Great routes, great hands, and runs after the catch. The guy can do it all.

Larry Fitzgerald

Andre Johnson

Calvin Johnson

Randy Moss

circus catches/levitation - Wayne can't sky over DBs on deep balls or in the red zone

How many defensive coordinators do you think approach a game thinking "man, we've just got to shut down Reggie Wayne"? How often do you think Wayne faces double coverages, and how does that compare to Fitz/Moss/Calvin? Defenses don't double Wayne very frequently, because they know that Manning will just go to Clark/Garcon/Collie, instead.Wayne is a very talented WR, but you're getting hyperbolic. Single most unstoppable WR in the league? More like "very good WR who benefits tremendously from playing with arguably the greatest QB in NFL history".

Clear? I don't think anyone is. Every year the top player changes.

How long will Warner play? How will he do with Leinart? There are questions.
I fail to see how any of those questions are relevant in a discussion of Fitzgerald's talent. This isn't a question of fantasy value, it's a question of NFL talent, and when last I checked the nameplate on the locker 3 down from yours doesn't really impact your own talent level.

I love it, Bloom. I love your willingness to leaves yourself out there with names like Crabtree, Rice, and Evans (three guys I'm pretty much tracking 100% with you on). The only significant disagreements I have are Braylon and VJax.

I would really like to know why you listed braylon in your top 10. I have watched him play a lot of football. From his years at Michigan through his years with cleveland. I know what he brings to the table with his athleticism and leaping ability. He makes some spectacular circus catches. But top 10? If a team needed a catch to keep a drive alive, win a game, or basically any pivotal play, braylon is the last guy on either list that I would want to count on for that play. His hand couldn't be any more inconsistent.

I have always enjoyed your willingness to throw a different perspective out there, but I can't wrap my mind around this selection.

This may come off as homerism, but I contend that Greg Jennings deserves consideration on this list. He's an elite route runner with deceptive speed, sure hands, a lethal propensity for the big play, and an explosive burst in the open field with the ball in his hands allowing him to rack up massive yac yardage. Jennings is still a dynamic playmaker and indeed an elite talent... his relative lack of Pro Bowl-level productivity this year is simply an aberration. :goodposting:

( :goodposting: )SSSSHHHHHHHH!!!!(I'm trying to buy low!)

I'm not asking for your top 10 FF WR's, or the ten most productive WR's. I'm asking for the top ten most talented WRs, the players who have the talent to make plays that make your jaw drop.

Jaw droppers? Then you gotta include Braylon Edwards and Chris Chambers. For all their talent, its jaw dropping the passes that they drop. At least Chambers has made some ridiculous catches.

I will agree Moss has unmatched talent when combining his size, speed and hands. The way he throws his hands up at the last minute so as to not let the defender know the ball is there is uncanny. And he makes catches in traffic look so easy. However, I've never seen him as a complete receiver like a Marvin Harrison or Jerry Rice that could go deep but also was the receiver you looked for on 3rd and 4. For a long time Moss had Cris Carter as the reliable 3rd down guy and now has Welker. Maybe he's never had to play that role? However, I see Wayne, Fitz and AJ as guys who are gamebreakers but who are looked for on 3rd down.

I think that this year when Welker was out Moss performed that role admirably, and even since then. He was leading the league in receptions for some time, IIRC, and they weren't all deep balls.

You pretty much hit it. He can make catches very few players can make. He has amazing athleticism for a player his size. His problem is hands, more specifically concentration, which isn't really a talent issue. In a vacuum, Edwards is one of the ten most talented WRs in the league - the criteria was ability to make jawdropping plays, and Edwards is one of the best at that.

oh come on, there is more to being an elite wr than ability to make freak plays. consistently catching balls should be a pretty obv qualification. after 3 years of egregious drops, i think its time to stop giving him the benefit of the doubt. considering that nfl teams were not willing to give up a first round draft pick should be a pretty good indication that hes not elite.

Without looking at any other lists, off the top of my head (so I may miss someone)

1. R. Moss

2. C. Johnson

3. A. Johnson

4. L. Fitzgerald

5. S. Rice

6. V. Jackson

7. B. Marshall

8. S. Smith

9. P. Harvin

10. R. White

Any of about 15 receivers could be in the top 10, and it seems like they are all studs.

Does anyone think the number of extremely talented receivers has grown tremendously that past 5 or so years?
