Chargers safety Kiel arrested on drug charges

Written by: Chris Mortensen ¦ 9/26/2006

San Diego Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was arrested Tuesday on drug-related charges, sources close to the team told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Kiel was charged with possession, possession for sale and transportation of a controlled substance according to a source.

The sources said several plain clothes DEA agents appeared at the Chargers' facility Tuesday morning with an arrest warrant, searched his locker and car, and took Kiel away.

The Chargers, who are coming off a bye week, were on the practice field at the time.

The exact nature of the charges is not known. Kiel was booked and released after posting $150,000 bond.

Chargers officials were not returning phone calls Tuesday night. Kiel and his agent also could not be reached for comment.

Kiel, a fourth-year player from Texas A&M, is the starting strong safety for the 2-0 Chargers, who play the 3-0 Ravens on Sunday. Kiel's status for the game is unclear.

Drafted in the fourth-round in 2003, Kiel was expected to start that season for the Chargers before he was shot three times in an attempted carjacking in Houston in July of that year.

so is Terrence Kiel the new Tamarick Vanover?
No-no-no...that DB from the Rams back in the day. Was it Darryl Henly? Or how about that kicker, Donald Iguebueke (I'm sure that spelling is wrong)
Yeah, Daryl Henley. That was coke, I think.Going by Kiels weight, I'm gonna guess coke. Coke is sooooo defensive back. Whereas if he were a lineman, it'd have to be weed. All the pot traffickers tend to be fat guys. Nate Newton, Bam Morris.

First, he posts bond.

Second the NFL announces that they will make no decisions until the outcome of the trial.

Third, his lawyer gets a continuance until Jan 8th 2008.

Fourth, no big deal.

His locker? In the Chargers' facility? I wonder if the controlled substance was steroids.

I think it is probably a big deal. But he may be fine for the rest of the season while he's out on bail.

Fifth, he takes out his frustration on McNair and Mason :football:
Nah, Jamal Lewis is going to plow into him, knock him on his back and tell him "Trust me, you don't want to bend over to pick up the soap!"

Hey, he's a football player. His lawyer will plea bargain him down to 200 hours of community service, and writing "I will not deal drugs" 1,000 times on the blackboard.

Are you allowed to leave the state if you are out on bail?
He's not exactly a flight risk, as he'll be on TV each Sunday. So yeah, the court will let him leave the state.

Better ask Nate Newton and Bam Morris about that.

Shouldn't the police be more concerned with out-of-control substances?

So you guys really think this won't take Kiel off the field this year?

Any word on who his replacement would be if he does miss time? Hart or Jue... or somebody else?

A sad day for Texas Aggie athletics. Kiel was part of the last crop of RC Slocum recruits.
This pretty much makes it obvious that he was dealing drugs out of his car when he was shot in Houston.
I agree. I remember back in 1997 when I heard Slocum was recruiting Kiel, it was then I knew he was going to get shot dealing drugs. Before Slocum got a hold of him he was a good kid, but look at him now. That Slocum disgusts me.

Terrence Kiel is looking to make a healthy return in 2006 after an ankle injury cut his season short in 2005. Despite being sidelined for four games late in the season, Terrence still finished the season as the team’s fourth-leading tackler with 59 stops.

When he’s not improving his game, Terrence enjoys spending time with his son, Terrence II, and the rest of his family in the Houston, Texas suburb of Lufkin where he grew up. He likes to go fishing and hunting and watch movies with his family.

Terrence has started to prepare for life after football by involving himself in several different business ventures. He owns an urban clothing store in Lufkin and has dabbled in real estate with a friend that he went to school with at Texas A&M.

This off of the Chargers site on NFL.com.

You can take the thug out of the street but you can't take the street out of a thug. If found guilty throw the book at this waste of air.

He's only been charged folks, I ask you to see what happened to Jamal Lewis 2 years ago, for a somewhat equal comparison.

The controlled substance was apparently codeine, which Kiel has a prescription for. The issue is that he may have been sending the codeine to Texas where it is commonly mixed with alcohol or other substances and used as a party drug. I don't know what quantities were involved.

Have the Chargers said that they will not pay him for the rest of the season? Have they rushed to dock his gamechecks yet?
If he is incarcerated and unable to perform the rest of theyear I am certain he won't be paid. You get paid on a weekly basis, so if you cant show up, you dont get your gamecheck. Not really docking pay.

Ahhh, smell the self self-righteous indignation. Do you hold yourself and your friends to same standard that you hold athlets to?

Hey GPN, I was definitely throwing a dig at how they handled Foley...who really to me was not supported by the organization. They rushed to judge his situation and we are finding out that what happened to Foley probably was not all his fault but more of a rookie cop.Now that $800,000 they kept from Foley will now be paid by a Police Dept insurance company that will shell out probably 10-20 times what he was docked by the Chargers. Insurance premiums go up for that Police Dept and of course that means the budget must increas...that money ahs to come form somehwere so they will either raise taxes or cut money from other city programs. So see in the end the wealthy Chargers are costing you and I the taxpayers more money by withholding Foley's paycheck for the year...which at under $1 million was a bargain. :D Well, something like that.
