Texans discussion on local sports radio (1 Viewer)

Interesting discussion on Sports Radio 610 in Houston this morning about the Texans I thought I would pass on. Note that I'm doing this in the vein of Joe's "You'll know what I know" stance, so use your own judgement as to what might be motivational coach speak, what is true assessment of players, etc.

The local announcers were discussing the Texans, but much of it was discussing things that Kubiak had said as opposed to them just giving their own opinions. One area they discussed was that Kubiak has apparently been extremely critical of Carr lately. The comments were along the lines of "he didn't just look poor, he looked really poor" and "a guy who has been in the league for 4 years shouldn't be making these kind of mistakes". I didn't hear the Kubiak quotes myself so don't know how word-for-word those are, but Kubiak was supposed to be the source of the comments. The announcers were discussing how they had thought Kubiak would be a more soft-spoken coach, but he's really been laying it on a few of the players of late.

They also said that Kubiak has been hard on Kevin Walter's performance. One thing of particular interest to me was that they said the WR who has singled himself out so far with a great camp is Derrick Lewis. (I thought they were basing that off of what they've heard from the Texans staff, but it wasn't clear, it could be the announcer's opinion). I mention that is of interest to me because in the scrimmage drills I saw at training camp Lewis stood out to me as the most impressive WR other than AJ (Moulds didn't practice that day). He's apparently a former arena league player with very good speed. Not saying I'd go out and draft him just now, but he's a guy I'd keep an eye on in deep leagues and see if he can climb the depth chart.

Any word on Chris Taylor? Heard some buzz about that guy early in camp. He's a name I try to keep an eye on as my "last round flyer" type. With Davis's knee problems, he's one to keep an eye on.

Carr seemed to have all the tools to: Smarts, cannon for an arm, character, mobility, tougness...

I wonder what's going on between that kids ears??

Hell, I've been discussing Carr's lack of instincts and poor decision making for years now...it's no shock to me. I heard the radio stuff, saw the Peter King article and read the ESPN piece where they are not pampering Carr anymore....hopefully it will be good for him...but it's no new news to me.

On the Texans but switching to Dom...Sharing from houstonprofootball.com...

Recovering from a surgical procedure he underwent in January, Davis has yet to feel comfortable enough with the progress in his recovery to return to the field. The missed time is now causing head coach Gary Kubiak to start rethinking the remainder of his August schedule.

"Our plan for Domanick was to play him quite a bit in this game (Kansas City preseason game) and the Denver game, and to keep him off the turf when we go to St. Louis," Kubiak said following the afternoon practice. "It looks like that plan is going to change."

Speaking to KILT-AM on Monday morning, general manager Rick Smith seemed to think the swelling in the knee was not the only issue Davis needed to overcome, but that the running back also needed to "understand" his knee would never be what it once was when he was younger.

 thanks, Vinny, for the updates. Keep them coming.

I've caught a mention of him here and there, but nothing substantial. I know he impressed me more than did the other RBs, but then that was without pads and he was bouncing it outside and outrunning the defense. I really want to see what he can do with pads and when he has to run between the tackles. Looking forward to the first preseason game this Saturday.

It is hard to value players before they play...no matter how much you watch them practice, the physical element of the NFL gets kicked up a notch once they start playing other teams for the last roster spots....To me Taylor hasn't impressed me as much as most of the Texans message board. They went loopy for some other back in camp last year too....but I don't think he made an NFL roster all of last season.

Here's a blurb from the Houston Chronicle on Carr. Mentions the kind of comments the radio discussion was centered on, but then also has some praise for Carr based on the afternoon practice.

Aug. 8, 2006, 12:28AMTEXANS SUMMARYBy JOHN MCCLAIN AND DALE ROBERTSONKubiak calls out CarrAfter getting their first day off during camp, the Texans returned to a morning practice that didn't sit well with coach Gary Kubiak. In Kubiak's post-practice critique, he mentioned quarterback David Carr."David has to practice; you can't come out here and practice like that," Kubiak said. "Guys have to help, but he's the ringleader every day, every practice. I expect a lot out of him, and he knows that."I was hard on David today, because our offense goes as our quarterback goes. When he practices well, we practice well."Carr and his teammates had a better afternoon practice."He's taking the coaching well," Kubiak said about Carr. "We didn't make the same mistakes in the afternoon practice. That's what this game's about. He takes to coaching. He listens, and that's all we can ask."

Watching him play I think he simply was battered into submission so badly there may be no hope for him. I don't know if he'll ever recover from the beating he's taken behind that line.

:goodposting: Kind of reminds me of what happened in Washington back in the Steve Spurrier days....Ramsey took a beating and has flinched in the pocket ever since.

When he was younger?!?! DD is only 25. And he's already got a bum knee. God help him when he turns 50.I've got DD in my main keeper league and am aggressively trying to trade him. He might manage to put up decent numbers this year, but the long term outlook is not promising.

Carr has company and can still resurrect his career. Look at the beating Plunkett took for the Pats in the 70's. Testaverde I believe was in similar with Tampa. And finally, Aikman, Carrs boyhood idol.

I was thinking of Ramsey too. The last poster beat me to the Aikman reference, although Aikman basically only had to suffer through that misery for one season.

Didn't think this was worthy of it's own thread, so bumping this one up with it.

The Sports Radio 610 announcers this morning said that Kubiak was only planning to play 3 RBs in Saturday's preseason game. Assuming that means Antowain, Morency and Lundy, though who knows, maybe he'll sit Antowain figuring he's a more known commodity.

One other thing of slight interest. They were talking about how it's already clear that Kubiak is a guy who is likely to change his mind and do something other than what he's said. They mentioned how he doesn't seem to keep to his schedule on his practices, just ending them if he feels he's seen enough, etc. Not saying he's going to be Skeletor Jr, but worth keeping in the back of your head if you're counting on what he says about questionable players for early lineup submissions.

Edit to add: The other guys might still get special teams time. Lundy and Taylor are supposed to be competing for kick/punt return duties with some other guys.

Camp quotes - Day 12

August 09, 2006

HoustonTexans.com

Following are excerpts from coach Gary Kubiak and players following the twelfth day of the Texans' 2006 training camp.

Head Coach Gary Kubiak

(on who will start at running back on Saturday) “(RB) Antowain (Smith), Antowain has done everything we’ve asked him to do. He’s been here a long time; we’ll take that pressure off of those young guys Saturday night. He’ll be the guy; he’ll be ready to go.”

Those guys took beatings for a year or two. Carr has taken beatings for all but 4 games over 4 years and I believe two of those years were top 5 all time beat downs. I've got to give him credit for only missing 4 games in that strectch, but I'm not sure he can overcome it.

Can someone tell me how many years in a row Carr needs to disappoint before people FINALLY give up on him?TIA>Colin
Need at least two with a competent head coach. (as opposed to the previous regime)
