DE Williams to visit Texans

By JOHN MCCLAIN

Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams, the top defensive player in the draft, is coming to Houston today to visit with the Texans.

The Texans insisted Sunday they are serious about taking Williams, who is rated as a better prospect than Julius Peppers, the defensive end taken second by Carolina in 2002. The Texans are ready to start contract negotiations. Under NFL rules, they can negotiate with any players they're considering drafting with the top pick April 29. They can negotiate with Williams, Reggie Bush and Vince Young and sign one before the draft.

Although left defensive end Anthony Weaver was their top priority in free agency, and Antwan Peek should be ideal for right end in the 4-3, the Texans insist that bringing in Williams isn't a ploy to help them sign Bush, who's expected to be the top pick.

The Texans have agreed to contract terms with veteran safety Michael Stone, who played at New England last season.

Stone gives the Texans a veteran safety to replace Marcus Coleman. He'll compete with C.C. Brown and Glenn Earl for playing time.

I was a bit surprised to see that the Texans were that interested in Mario Williams.

I'm not surprised, but they must be considering moving down.Jets / Texans trade makes perfect sense to me.

Only reason I disagree is because Mangini comes from the philosophy that stock-piling picks is the best way to draft/build a franchise. This combined with the numerous Jet needs, I don't believe it will happen.

Texans are foolish if they don't trade down.

They have a ton of problems and Dominick Davis isn't one of them.

No, all they are doing it attempting to increase their negotiating leverage with Reggie Bush, and Williams is the only other top candidate that is logical. If they were interested in moving down to #4 or so to take Mario, they wouldnt be negotiating a #1 pick contract with him.

You may be right, I didn't account for Mangini. Is he making the draft decisions?Personally, I love the fit of Reggie Bush in New York, and with CurMar around for another year or two, he'd learn from one of the best in the business.

I think that this is more of a ploy to get more teams to try and trade up. If teams really want Williams/Bush then they may have to trade up to #1 to get him. A great move by the Texans to possibly get more for the #1 pick if they do trade it. i do not know why they had VYoung in though.

Obviously we can't take anything they say at face value, but I'd think it much more likely that they're looking to trade down than convince Bush that they don't want him.

Hes the most popular man in Texas right now?

If they were interested in trading down for Mario, they wouldnt be bringing him in as a possible #1 candidate. Would decrease their leverage.

But no team is going to move up to the #1 spot to draft him. I think more than anything they are saving face in Texas by having him in so as to look like they are interested in him and not piss off the Texas Homers.

Sure they would. It happens all the time. Because they have the #1 pick they can talk contract with any player that they want. Doesn't mean they have to sign them. They can have 10 guys in talking contracts. If they end up trading down it doesn't matter because they talked contract while they had the #1 pick. As was mentioned before it is either:a) a ploy to sign Bush to a cheaper contract.

or

b) a way to get more teams interested in trading up to #1.

How do you figure?Besides, maybe I'm putting too fine a point on it, but where do you see what Houston is offering him? It's entirely possible they just want another look at him, to discuss things and not offer the #1 contract.

Um yes. Thats the logical conclusion of my comment.

Why show interest in a player they will only draft if they trade down?Right now, if the Jets call me wanting to move up, why would I want them to know theres a player who I would consider taking at #1 who would be available to me at #4?

They arent going to give me nearly as much in trade if they think that Im actually looking to move down to #4 and pick up a guy who I think is a #1 pick.

If a team wants Bush, they'll pay the asking price regardless. The only team I see this affecting at all would be the Saints.

This makes no sense. No team is going to trade up to #1 for a shot at Mario. Its purely a negotiating tactic with Bush.

Theres a difference between Two #1s, a #2 and a #3

and

Two #1s, a #2 and a #5

The Texans will get negotiated down if its known they want Mario.

Standard operating procedure

Increasing their leverage should they be trying to move the pick

Stopping other teams from attempting to move up and driving up the market

Thread title is a bit misleading. Where does the article ever say they are negotiating with Vince Young?!?!? Or Bush yet for that matter?

I'm not saying they won't, let's just not put the cart before the horse.
