Texans RB Davis to only practice once a day to start

7/26/2006

(on Domanick Davis' health)“We're going to find out with Domanick. We were very cautious with him back in OTA’s and in the off-season. We all know that he has a knee that's giving him problems. We'll be smart with him, he'll be a one-a-day practice guy for us. So I think we're going to know a lot more about that knee and how he's doing probably here over the course of the next week. It has been good, he's been working well. Kevin feels good about it, Dominick feels good about it. But until we test it hard for about a week we're not going to know for sure. We're hoping for the best. We sure hope he's going to be fine and play throughout the season. Last year he missed what, five starts, so you always prepare for those moments and that's on every spot on your team.”

(on the running back situation) “I think the running back situation will be very interesting. Antowain (Smith) had a good camp. He's been successful in this league. He takes care of his body. There's no reason why he doesn't have some good football ahead of him. I think from a young standpoint, I’m excited to watch these guys compete. I was very impressed with Wali Lundy, he did make a couple of plays in camp. I was very impressed with Chris Taylor. (Vernand) Morency missed a lot of time throughout that month, and he’s going to battle with some good young football players. And of course the young man from Syracuse did some good stuff so I think it’ll be interesting to see who’ll be the other backs on this football team. There will be great competition and we’ll see how that pans out. Also I was impressed with Taylor as a kick returner during camp. I think that’s an added dimension that he has.”

Texans RB Davis says his knee is close to 100 percent

7/27/2006

(on his health and how much he’ll practice on his knee) “I think I’m going to be a one-a-day guy and just slowly get into it and take my time. I’m just focusing on getting myself together and to be ready when it’s time."

(on zone blocking) “This is the real zone blocking. We started last year and we kind of got away from it. We were trying other things that other teams were doing at that time. It’s a big difference. Guys like it because they’re all on the same page now and it’s looking really good. I can’t wait to be out there running behind it.”

(on where he’ll be staying during training camp) “I’m going to be home. I have a new baby girl, so I want to see her every night, I don’t want to miss anything.”

(on his knee) “It’s not 100 percent, but it’s close.”

(on his playing time during the preseason) “I’m not sure. I’m just taking it one day at a time. I’m going to get out there and practice tomorrow. Like I said, I’m going to be a one-a-day guy and just do what it allows me to do.”

Texans homer here.

This is one I'll be watching closely in camp. DD's knee would swell after practices or games last year and I haven't seen anything yet to make me think he's healed. In fact, the recovery seems to be behind or at least not ahead of schedule.

If DD experiences any swelling during his 1-a-days, then he's off my radar and I'll let someone else deal with it all season.

This is traditional for Shanny up in Denver (I think they are doing this with at least a dozen this year) so don't worry that Kubiak is doing this.

Last year DD had to practice twice a day, so this will help reduce that. But like Festivus said if it still swells up with 1-a-days then there should be some concern.
