Thanks Giving Day Game - The Detriot Debate (1 Viewer)

So Detriot has sucked for a long time. Should the big Thanks Giving Day game be changed? Maybe it is tradtion and that is fine some what. But who is sick of loading up on Turkey and watching Detriot get spanked in a boring as hell game on T-day? Me I'd rather lose the tradition and watch for example last years super bowl teams duke it out on T-day. Imagine how fun that would be to watch the Steelers hit the turf with Seattle before gorging on turkey and stuffing instead of watching a team that has been pathetic getting stomped by team that might be ok or might not. I seriously think we should email our new NFL commish and lobby for the T-day games to feature rematches from last years play offs and super bowl instead of the yawn fest the Detroit and Dallas games seem to offer these days. For me, it would make T-day that much more exciting.

If we are going to do that lets kill some other traditions:

*Auburn and Alabama should not play each other in years one of them sucks. same applies to Michigan and Ohio St, USC/Notre Dame, Georgia/Florida, and every other huge college football rivalry. Why even bother?

*Cincinnati should not have the first day game on opening day in baseball because they play in a small market.

*Harvard and Yale should stop playing every year because they are Division 1-AA programs that don't even participate in the playoffs.

*The players in hockey should not shake hands after a completion of a playoff series.

*All NFL games should be moved to Friday as to not interfere with the traditional Christian Sabbath.

*All Friday NFL games should be moved to Tuesday as to not interfere with the Muslim Holy Day.

*All Tuesday NFL games should be moved to Wednesday as to not interfere with Tuesday college football games on ESPN.

*Fantasy Football drafts should be moved to March as to not interfere with people's vacation plans.

*We should not have the St Patrick's Day parade anymore in New York because all the Irish have moved to Kansas. If the Parade continues no non-Irish person should be allowed to participate.

I could go on and on. Detroit has the game and should continue to have a game on Thanksgiving. It is tradition and whether they are usually bad has absolutely no bearing on this conversation. If they take away the game in Detroit they need to take away the game in Dallas also. That's not going to happen.

Yea and we should all tune in to a game that is pointless and watch Detriot get throttled yet again. I'm apporaching this from a fan based and marketing stand point. If the T-day games actually were interesting it would not only boost NFL revenue, but make the games worth watching. Imagine how much more fun t-day games would be if they featured rivals that were contenders instead of a consistant loser vs. some other team.I will agree with you on the Dallas game. I'd rather see match ups from last years playoffs. All that other stuff you mentioned about ESPN and religion in jest is just that. The rest, I bet if a poll was run, the majority would take at-day match ups which featured competitive teams and was worth watching over tradtion any day.Tradition is one thing and has it's place. However, from a marketing and fan based stand point, watching Detroit lose gets old. I'm not alone I don't think as I spend a lot of time around NFL fans. I think the tradtion on T-day would be enhanced if it featured a real contesest between teams that wanted to rip each other apart. Think about it. Say 5 years ago how much more fun it would have been to watch Green Bay duke it out with the Vikings then watch Detroit. Or say even last years losers, even the Browns Vs. Baltimore would have been more fun. Tradition is great, but for a holiday and for the NFL, it should be something some what fun to watch. So, my point is for the holiday, it should be a classic match up based on last years performance. Not a team that has sucked over the last 20 years + against another team. Make the t-day games a shoot out, not a turkey shoot. The Dallas t-day game is the only one left that offers intrigue. The Detriot game is a yawn fest.

In that case, why do they televise any Lion's games?
I guess some people like watching disasters. After all, there are tons of shows these days based on watching people suffer. None the less, I challenge anyone to debate the fact that the T-day Detroit games are anything more then boring as hell and no fun to watch.

As a Steelers season ticket holder I hope they keep the tradition and leave the games in Detroit & Dallas. I would rather stay home on Thanksgiving than go to the stadium. I love going to games but not on holidays.

The past two seasons the Steelers have had home night games on Halloween and last season they had a home game on New Years Day. This season they have a home game on Christmas Eve.

The owners voted on this a few years ago and the proposal lost something like 30-1. It seems the owners were concerned with filling the stadium on a holiday. In Detroit people can use the "Tradition" excuse to get away from the families for a day. If the game rotated the thought is that it may be difficult to sell tickets.

Of course most people will disagree with this since I do not have a link, but it was played up pretty big here.

I hate Detroit as a Packers fan. But I like the tradition. Not enough people respect tradition any more and I am glad the NFL does.

how did it come down to Dallaas and Detroit for Thanksgiving games, anyhow?!

who was the brains behind this? I heard something about LBJ starting it..

:goodposting: I don't hate the Packers because I'm not a Lions fan but I do hate them because their fans are generally annoying.

I think that if they are going to stick to tradition, then they should make them both traditional games. Lock 4 teams in instead of just 2. Have the Lions play a team like the same team (Bears or Packers) every year, preferably alternating home sites. Make it the Cowboy-Redskin game, too.

This way, even if one or both teams in a game stink, the game still means something, kind of like all those high school football Thanksgiving day rivalries.

I dont have time to look it up exactly, but around the late 50s early 60s, the NFL (or whatever it was called) wanted to start having games on Thanksgiving, unfortunately, no teams would do it except for Dallas and Detroit. It lasted a few years, then they quit. Around the late 60s and early 70s they picked it up again when the realized the market would be high. They offered it to Dallas and Detroit first, they took it.

I believe it was Lamar Hunt and Tex Shram (SP?) who got the thing rolling.

From a Canadian's point of view, it seems that I'm always working afternoons that week so I don't see much of the early game anyway.

Lastly, one thing to correct, the Reds don't/haven't been the very first game for the new MLB season for a few years so much for that tradition. Also what about the NEW tradition now of THE NFL network showing a night game on Turkey day anyway? Chances are Pittsburgh will be on there sometime soon.

Good luck with that... :lmao:

I seriously think if you don't like it, turn the TV off and actually spend some time with your family, which is what the holiday is for in the first place.

Dang it, you beat me to it. Yes, it is true the Lions are actually tougher on Turkey Day than they have been compared to other games during the course of the year.

Perhaps a better angle to take would be a more meaningful game rather than if they're winning or losing on T-Day. A lot of the time, the Lions are basically already out of the playoffs by late Nov. and whether they win or lose on that day, it really doesn't matter.............which is part of the problem here IMO.

Booo, wrong reply Keys. A lot of us spend time with uncles, cousins or brothers and watch the football game together. The Detroit Lions have won one playoff game since Super Bowl 1.......just freaken 1 playoff game and that's when Erik Kramer defeated the Cowboys in 91 or 92 at home.I live in Detroit and am all about tradition. But you know, it's a freaken disgrace that team and I just about feel they should be punished......besides the fact it's tradition, why does Detroit deserve it?

We already answered the question. Nobody else wants it.

No, it's not.If you don't like the game, your recourse is to turn it off. Lowered ratings will send the NFL the message loud and clear.

Is there a link or did you guys just come up with this answer? It wasn't long ago that half the league was in an uproar and trying to get the Thanksgiving game.

Ya but if you want to watch football why should you have to turn anything off because of bad product? There's plenty of great product in the sport and just like on Monday Night games, you want great matchups...just like the NBA does on Christmas Day. Whether it be Detroit Pistons vs. Indiana after they had the braul the year before or Miami vs. Cleveland to showcase 2 young stars. Just throwing Detroit in there year after year with the overall success they have on their season due to tradition is boring. I want to be with family, have a great meal and watch the Colts vs. Patriots or Seahawks vs. Carolina. Not have the day off and watch the 2-6 Lions play host to the 3-5 Packers. Sure the game might be 29-27 but who freaken cares.

The tradition goes back way farther than that for Detroit:"Four generations of Detroiters have been a proud part of the American celebration of Thanksgiving. The relationship between Detroit and Thanksgiving dates back to 1934 when owner G.A. Richards scheduled a holiday contest between his first-year Lions and the Chicago Bears. Some 71 years later, fans throughout the State of Michigan have transformed an annual holiday event into the single greatest tradition in the history of American professional team sports. Indeed, if football is America’s Passion, Thanksgiving football is Detroit’s Passion."

History of Thanksgiving Day Game in Detroit

Dallas joined the tradition in 1966, and this year the NFL begins a including a night game with KC hosting Denver at 8 p.m.

"The Detroit Lions of the American National Football League have hosted a game every Thanksgiving Day since 1934, with the exception of 1939–1944 (due to World War II). The Dallas Cowboys have hosted every Thanksgiving Day since 1966, with the exception of 1975 and 1977 when the then-St. Louis Cardinals hosted. The Kansas City Chiefs hosted games during their days in the American Football League, and will revive that tradition in 2006 when they host the Denver Broncos on Thanksgiving. "

Interesting. I wonder if this means KC will get a Turkey Day home game every year?

Good question. I can't find anything definitive, but the triple-header will be here to stay. Also, the Thanksgiving night game will be the first regular season game shown on NFL network.

I believe you didn't read the whole thread. ;)

i think it should be the same matchups switching home fields every year :

odd years = packers @ lions / redskins @ cowboys

even years = lions @ packers / cowboys @ redskins

3rd game broncos vs chiefs etc...

If I had my pick, it would be to place the two leading "America's teams" on Thanksgiving, rotating them as much as necessary.

Right now:

Colts

Cowboys

This man has good ideas.

Detroit invented the game. No one else wanted it..saying it would be a failure.

The NFL got it right..keeping Detroit and Dallas and adding a third game.

No thanks. Football keeps me sane during holidays with the family.

I guess, count me in the minority who would watch any 2 teams play on Turkey day. I love the game, it is my favorite time of the year.

I rarely have a bad day during football season, regardless of how crappy my fantasy teams might be doing.

I love the game, gimme a turkey leg and the Lions Vs. the Texans and I am happy!

:goodposting: Since 1976, in the 30 Thansgiving Day games, Detroit is 17-13 (.567 pct.)

Amen to that! Everyone whining in this post would be the same people not buying tickets to the game if it was in their city for more than one year anyway. The Lions and Cowboys aren't going anywhere and you'll get your "good" game in game #3 going forward. Tradition stays and there is more football to watch on Thanksgiving....who can't be thankful for that? :football:

No, they're going to rotate it.I have to say, I like the idea of another nationally televised Denver game, but I *HATE* this Thanksgiving game. Stupid f'in NFL Network and their ridiculous charges means I don't get it- which effectively turns this into a Denver game that I quite simply have no means to watch. I can't even watch a different game and hope they'll cut away to the action when they're in the redzone.Broadcasting games on the NFL Network has to be one of the worst ideas out there.

Thank God you don't.
:goodposting: Colts are one of "America's teams?" Since when? Last year I watched as the Steelers fans completely destroyed a hand full of Colts fans right here. Redskins have a much bigger national following than almost anyone other than the Cowboys and the Steelers, Dolphins, and Raiders easily qualify as teams with national appeal. The Colts might be "in" with 12 year olds and bandwagoneers but they don't count toward TV revenue anyway. Colts aren't even the most popular team in large parts of their small state (read BEARS) and even though people may like watching them, they are no where near a so called "America's team." But then again, Aaron Brooks will be the #1 Fantasy QB this year.
