Thanksgiving means so many different things for so many people. It's one of the most traveled holiday's in the United States as people fly from all over to go home and visit family. For some, it's a trip downtown and watch the Thanksgiving parade or to volunteer some time to those that are not so fortunate. No matter what you do, at some point durinig Thanksgiving, to many Thanksgiving also means football.

For years the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys have hosted Thanksgiving football. For me, a Detroit native and a fan of the Dallas Cowboys it's been pretty great because I've always had two teams of interest to watch on those days since I can remember. In the past, I've heard rumblings about getting a rotation on Thanksgiving so that all teams get a shot to play on Thanksgiving in front of the national audience.

I disliked the idea because to me, Thanksgiving meant tradition. That Detroit and Dallas were the hosts for good or bad and you stick with it because of tradition. I was driving around today and was listening to a radio show about the topic and I have to admit for the first time in my life, I don't think Detroit should continue to host Thanksgiving games. So, my opinion is if Detroit can't host, then Dallas shouldn't either and just rotate it. Kicking out Detroit and leaving Dallas to host would be kind of odd, it would just be a good time to start a rotation.

There are several reasons I think Detroit shouldn't be allowed to keep hosting Thanksgiving Day games. One reason is that most people who are watching the games have the day off and are visiting family and deserve to be excited about watching a quality matchup. The Lions are the worst franchise in sports and the American public shouldn't HAVE to watch them every Thanksgiving. They are very rarely involved in a playoff race come that time of the year, as sad as that is to say.

This year, there is potential to have an undefeated Tennessee Titan team against a winless Lions team. Besides the comical value to such a circumstance, why should the entire country have to watch such a ridiculous matchup. Even if the Lions did upset Tennessee, we all know that there's been big upsets in sports........but who cares. The Lions have nothing to play for and more than likely, they'll be crushed by halftime. This past Sunday, the game was over by halftime as Jacksonville who's an average team was up 24-7 and up 38-7 soon after that.

The Detroit Lions don't deserve to host the Thanksgiving game. It should be a priviledge to host that game and the Lions organization has not retained the right to keep hosting it. The fans are not interested in watching a team who's got no chance of making the playoffs and games that are often over at halftime. The Lions have actually done OK in their history of games on the actual day itself, but as I mentioned many of those games mean nothing as their season was over.

My initial thought is that the two SB teams from the previous year can host a Thanksgiving game. Obviously you're not gauranteed that those teams will be quality teams the following year but I promise you, you'll have a better chance at those teams being good than the Lions being good. Also, I like the idea that those teams earned having the national game.

The Detroit Lions have lost their right to host the Thanksgiving game. What Detroit SHOULD host is a game versus them and whomever wins the National Championship game in college. I bet Texas Tech would score 20 points on the Detroit Lions, if not more. Please Mr. Goodell, put an end to the national embarrassment we've been put through in Detroit and bury them on a Sunday at 1 PM where there's a plethera of matchups to choose from now with bye weeks over.

I say keep it traditional - the Thanksgiving game is the closest things Lions fans have (or might ever have) to the Super Bowl. Taking it from them would be just cruel.

Stick with tradition - it's easier to take a bad football game on Thanksgiving than just about any other day anyway. Game sucks? There's plenty of other stuff going on that day (especially if you are at a family get together) - worst case there's always a Twilight Zone marathon on somewhere.

As a Lions homer it's a joke to have to watch them play every year on this day. BUT it's also stupid to even HAVE NFL games on this holiday in the first place. I really don't care about tradition......honestly, what was the reason many many years ago they even started doing a game on these days?

My take is if they ARE going to show these games, then they should treat them with as much respect as they do all the other national broadcast games, especially the prime time ones, and have input in what these matchups are.

The Detroit Lions organization, from coaching to GM, to ownership is probably the worst professional sports organization there is, period. The fact that they get showcased every year is a joke to the NFL and Roger Goodell should care about that.

(Steelers/Patriots.....Giants/Redskins).....if they really wanted to showcase the NFL and what makes it great THESE are the types of games to show, not the Lions/Titans.

I look at it differently. I am thinking of their fans.....can you imagine eating a big Thanksgiving Day meal and then sit there and watch something that disgusting? Let's give Detroit fans a break since Mr. Ford won't and sell the team and allow them to eat Thanksgiving dinner without getting indigestion or the same typical annual argument at my household of what the Lions NEED to do to turn things around. That's one Thanksgiving tradition I can do without, trying to figure how who the next coach is going to be.

I'm not sure what the exact reason is that they started playing on Thanksgiving but you have college games on Christmas and you have NBA games on Christmas Day too. My thought is that people are off work and can watch is the reasoning.I like your thoughts on how the NFL should treat the Thanksgiving games the same as other primetime games.

While I am not a fan of having to watch the Lions & Cowboys this year (or most years,) I am looking forward to the Eagles / Cardinals matchup later that night.

Lions and Boys will never lose the game. When they took it many years ago nobody else wanted it. As long as it is not the Steelers I like the idea of a 3rd game

What ticks me off though is that the game that is on the NFL Network is a way better matchup than the nagtional broadcast games. As a FOOTBALL fan it makes me sick to have to keep seeing the Lions every year on national TV. Pity is a moronic excuse. Hearing people say that they should let the Lions keep it because it's the only thing they've got, or because they'll never give it up because no one wanted it is all laughable to me. The fact that the Lions and Cowboys CHOSE these tradtions is STUPID because they were given the choice in the first place. When did the Detroit Lions ever earn the right to choose anything??The NFL should care more than that about their image and expanding their fan base. The Lions/Titans game will be shut off before halftime in most households because it'll be a joke.

I like it, in that I feel a little obligation to spend time with family, and I usually enjoy it. I can have the game on for something to watch between conversation, but if there is anything worth my attention, I don't feel like I'm missing a real football game.

I vote for tradition and one step further, I would add a third "steady" team, prefibly an AFC team with some history and a climate for a nightgame. Miami springs to mind but you could go a few directions. The Chiefs might be worthy of that too.

Tradition, no doubt about it. Any football game is fun and watchable, especially on Thanksgiving.

Hate the night game also

C'mon, its the one nationally televised game the Lions get each year. And since by contract every NFL team gets at least 1 nationally televised game a season, do you really want the Lions to get a sunday or monday night game instead? Stick with tradition and keep the loser Lions on Thanksgiving when nobody is really watching anyway. Everyone is busy catching up with family and friends to really be paying much attention to the game, it's just background noise anyway.

I voted to keep tradition. If they're going to have a third game, I say rotate it around cities that have an outdoor stadium and a good chance of winter weather (think GB, Chi, Buf). Nothing gets me in the Holiday Season mood more than seeing snow on Thanksgiving.

:help: If you added a 3rd and/or 4th team (preferrably AFC teams)..........then you could create a rotational setup and keep Dallas and Detroit."Tradition".........doesn't HAVE to mean EVERY yr. (how 'bout every other yr?)How do you feel about Detroit or Dallas hosting the Thanksgiving night game?

I am surprised at the many comments about tradition, especially in this day and age, I respect that. Although I will say it seems to be out of pity. It's sad that most don't want to take away the Lions only chance for a nationally televised game or the other popular answer that it's good to have on a football game but once that's not too important because you know you're going to miss some of it because it's a holiday and you're visiting etc...

I'm glad the Lions can fill those needs for people, maybe one day they'll try to fill the needs of what should count the most, their own fans.

Can't we have a little bit of both? Have Dallas play Detroit. Then with the other game make it a good one. By all means, have Detroit on early. That way I can get a good nap after eating tons of turkey.

I don't mind the Dallas game, but the Detroit game never has any atmosphere, its like 80,000 zombies in a cavernous

hole watching the worst pro sports franchise pretend to play football...you can hear a pin drop in that new stadium..

I'd prefer to buck tradition and have two 'flex' matchups depending on team records..I'd rather see Carolina and GB moved to Thanksgiving, or Pitt/Ne, or NYG/Was, or Chi/Minn...

but Tenn/Det and Dallas/Seattle makes me happy I'm leaving for Ireland the day before and will miss these lousy Thanksgiving games.

:sadbanana:

 Its hard to really get into the games at times. I typically haven't seen some of the family for a while and like catching up with them. If the NFL rolls out two heavy-weights on Thanksgiving, I think it would detract from the reason we get together that day.

Nearly a 2-1 favorite here in the Shark Pool to keep with tradition but as my original statement, I disagree.

The Lions don't deserve to have the game. They are winless and playing with very little pride.......very sad. I'd honestly rather see a good college game than watch the Detroit Lions.
