The 1977 Song Draft (1 Viewer)

Not sure how well-known this tune is, but I think it's my favorite of theirs ...

Electric Light Orchestra - "Mr. Blue Sky"
Why aren't ELO in the Hall of Fame, or at least Jeff Lynne?I've been meaning to start a thread on this
I could answer that, but you won't like it
They're crap isn't the most revealing of answers. Why shouldn't they be admitted?I've only got ELO best ofs & Discovery, so I'm not an ardent fan or anything, but long periods of consisent quality at a very high commercial level, fingers in many pies, innovative etc.

Who has ripped off the Beatles better apart from perhaps Oasis? (maybe another thread :bag: )
As I said in the other thread, I think they will be admitted at some point. Whether they "should" or "shouldn't" be, well I have no opinion. I don't think they had the kind of impact that their fans think they did. Jeff Lynne rubbed elbows with a lot of heavy hitters... but what kid danced in front of his mirror wishing he could be Jeff ####### Lynne someday?
So he was a commercial whore with no charisma?
Are you putting words in my mouth or are those your own words? I'm not even sure. You should tell me why he should be in the HoF. Album sales? X number of hit songs? Rubbed elbows with the right people?
No it's an argument I can see being made. You didn't say it in so many words. As for Why he should be in the HOF, is there a criteria for admittance? I'm sure there is, be it written or unwritten. Name a more commerically successful artist that is eligible, that isn't in the HOF. Are Blondie in?

The reason I didn't start the thread, is that I wanted to research a bit more into the admittance criteria. My first reaction is that they should be in the hall, but why is a very good question.

Just 'cuz I have to have something from my neck of the woods:

5.17 : Steve Miller Band -- "Jungle Love"

... and I assume I need some disco. THIS is a disco song:

6.01 : Joe Tex --- "Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)"

Okay I tried with all my might to keep from going here,

but since 3 of my aces just got snagged, I think it's fated:

"What song is it you wanna hear?"

:excited:

I hope this is not eligible, 'cause I would have taken it in the 1st round...

Released on the "One From The Road" album in '76.Released as a single in '76.

Peaked on the charts in '77.

I'd say if ever a live version was the definitive one for a song, this is it.

How bout you?

Oh yeah. Been looking at that for a couple rounds- figure if it wasn't taken by now, it might slip through the cracks to my next picks.

The pick's perfectly fine ... disagree about the definitiveness of this version, though. I have heard a few classic rock stations that prefer to play the live version over the studio version, though.

the live version is very long, so many stations nowadays don't play it as much because of time constraints. back in the day though, it was played a lot, and that famous line from the song is still quoted all the time today...."what song is it you wanna hear." love the piano solo in that live version "play it pretty for atlanta".

Great value here then. I seriously considered this in Round One, but couldn't confirm the 1977 peak anywhere but Wikipedia.

We should start a website that can serve as an official ruler for the purposes of these drafts. Humuna, you're a computer guy, right?

Tom Petty - American Girl
Good pick. I will never be able to separate this song from a certain film scene.Sincerely,

-Jame Gumb

P.S. Put the ####in' lotion in the basket!
"It rubs the lotion on it's skin, or else it get's the hose again""Would you #### me? I'd #### me sooo hard"

I was thinking the beginning of Fast Times At Ridgemont High.Guess we're talking about different movies.

actually, it looks like it was only released as a single in the UK. so is that illegal?
It was released as a single in the US, too ... but in 1976 per allmusic. There's no entry for it on the Billboard Pop Singles chart per allmusic.

well #### me:

Eric Clapton - "Lay Down Sally"
Damn. This was on my list.
I crossed it off as ineligible. Have to double checkPM sent to Monsieur Tufnel for my 6th pick
"LDS" came out as a single in 1978, but the album, Slowhand was released in November '77, according to my sources. So, per our rules, it should be good.
