Hardy turned out to be a great 6th rounder. They got Captain Munnerlyn in the 7th round. This is the right move IMOHardy gets tagged
no doubt. There was zero chance the panthers would let him walk.Slapdash said:This is the right move IMONCCommish said:Hardy gets tagged

If you guys and gals are cool with it, I change the title from 2013 to 2014. Too much good karma in this thread to start a new one for this year.
Yeah I don't see him coming here unless he was ubercheap to sign. They will not sign Nicks due to a ton of reasons. So no worries there.
I wouldnt say there is no way that it happens probably in the 99.9% range that it doesnt. Way too many reasons why this isnt going to work with the number 1 being money. We cannot pay him anything remotely close to what he thinks he is worth. Sidney Rice, James Jones would be more logical. I would love to get JJ in here.Still beating the Nicks drum on ESPN. I don't see how we could give him the multi-year deal he says he wants and sign anyone else. I don't see it unless he is willing to do a cheap one year.

They have too many running backs now. We need a real wideout much more than we need any more defense with the exception of DBs. My guess is first round will be a WR or CB depending on who falls. All the first round OL will be gone by 28. Second round there will be a ton of take a chance OL left. They will likely grab at least one there. Probably another in the 3rd or 4th. I find it unlikely at best that they will draft an RB unless it is very late and nothing else is on the board.Panthers need to draft more defense and add a RB / WR later in the draft.
Yeah, but no great Running Back to help support your Defense. You've got to bring in another body and cut Jonathan Stewart if he's not ready do play. With your defense, Cam can win you games by himself. But with an even better defense and a stud, bruising back, this can be a Championship team. They have too many running backs now. We have a bruising back in Tolbert. And cutting Stewart wouldn't get us any cap relief. IIRC it would actually cost us money to cut him. This team will not be spending a high draft pick on an RB.Yeah, but no great Running Back to help support your Defense. Edit: Imagine Eddie Lacy on this team.
That is because he was in the process of changing his name to Smith Sr and it was going to be reflected on this seasons jerseys.I hope Smith isn't cut. I noticed his jerseys aren't available on the team site. Maybe they sold out. It has been said that Smith is learning about his future via the media instead of via the organization. If true, that is a disrespectful way to do business. I'm surprised the big cat would be OK with that. Whatever the future holds, I hope Smith retires a Panther.
Yeah. Not liking the writing on the wall for Smitty. As a fan it's very unfortunate. The bright side is, it appears that Jerry is letting go of the calls and letting the GM do his thing. There's no way this happens if Jerry's still calling the shots. Still sucks to lose a guy like Smitty. Seems like they could keep him for just one more year. Don't understand what is to be gained by cutting now...but we don't know the plan. Hope it works out.So latest rumor is Smitty on the trading block. If that is reality at this point in time that usually means the player is getting cut and the team is trying for a hail mary to at least get something. No one is doing a trade with his salary. If the Panthers cut him Gettleman better be damn sure he has a sure fire, no miss, plan at wideout or this could make for a swift exit for our new GM. JR is letting him run the team right now but cut Smitty, a guy JR has great personal like for, and then the team struggles? Not sure all will be happy time in Pantherland.
The guys at Cat scratch reader seem to indicate that this means the Panthers have a FA lined up (Nicks maybe?) and Smiths presence in the looker room is hindering development of some players. Not sure if I agree but this is what some of the rumor/logic that is going around. So latest rumor is Smitty on the trading block. I keep hearing the locker room thing and Smith may be greedy for the ball. But Smith has practically begged the team to get some help out at wideout and move him to the slot for two years. It's all about money IMO.The guys at Cat scratch reader seem to indicate that this means the Panthers have a FA lined up (Nicks maybe?) and Smiths presence in the looker room is hindering development of some players. I can't say I blame him. He's been saying for 2 - 3 years now he'd be happy moving to #2 or the slot and they've essentially ignored him. I'd be annoyed with the organization too. I also get that Gettleman wasn't part of those decisions too. Just a bad situation all around. The only thing I can figure is he refused to rework his contract.Yeah. Yeah I don't blame him. Especially when you look at the guys mentioned to come in and replace him. He not only had a better season last season but a better career overall. Playing with some of the crappiest QBs in the NFL and making them look good. He earned that contract and he has every right to expect to play it out.I can't say I blame him. I'm not sure, but my impression is that many veterans have taken restructured salaries recently for Carolina. Not unreasonable to expect a 35 year old "leader" to take a pay cut.Yeah I don't blame him. Especially when you look at the guys mentioned to come in and replace him. Not saying I wouldn't ask as the GM. I'm saying as a fan I don't have a problem with him not taking a cut. Especially when I look at them paying Nicks the same money if he gets what he wants. Smith is still better than Nicks IMO.I'm not sure, but my impression is that many veterans have taken restructured salaries recently for Carolina. That said, it seems like a bad move that Smith found out about all of this through the media. It is an even worse sign that he has spent the last week responding through the media.
His current contract is a result of restructure from 2012. Yeah....a GM can ask and I don't really fault him for asking, but at some point enough is enough. He's thrown a good amount of "faith" towards the Panthers. It's not unreasonable for him to expect at least some courtesy in return.I'm not sure, but my impression is that many veterans have taken restructured salaries recently for Carolina. Only receiver on the roster with an NFL catch and outplayed Nicks last year.At this point, Steve Smith is not worth $7 million.
Correct call by the Panthers.
Still not worth $7 mil.NCCommish said:Only receiver on the roster with an NFL catch and outplayed Nicks last year.spider321 said:At this point, Steve Smith is not worth $7 million.

Neither is Nicks and supposedly that is the range he is looking for. There may be a slight chance that Nicks signs for far less based on the hometown element of it but I still dont see that happening. if they are going to pay for someone I hope they get james jones and maybe pair him with Sid Rice. Rice should be dirt cheap. If we sign a wr that clears up a lot of what we do at the top of the draftNeither is Nicks and supposedly that is the range he is looking for. hence why he would be "dirt cheap".Sidney Rice is injured more than Nicks, and hasn't really had more than a couple good seasons.
Cupboards are absolutely bare at this point. Excluding Smith, there isn't a WR on this roster that has an NFL catch. Rumblings that Hicks' folks have been in touch with the Panthers. I wouldn't take him unless I could get him for half what Smitty was taking. No interest in Rice if he can't stay healthy. Who cares if they can get him cheap if he never plays? Also rumblings that Smitty would be headed to Baltimore if he is actually cut. I guess that's good. Last thing I wanted to see was him in the division abusing the secondary.Mitchell lost to the Steelers. I wanted him back a hell of a lot more than one of the worst RTs in the league. But good for Mike he took his one year show me deal and showed out. Be interesting to see how he does behind a less than elite front. Between actually signing Bell, the Smith fiasco and this I don't think our GM is having his best week.
Well we do have Godfrey and he was on the upswing prior to the injury. They will likely try to rework him now rather than cut him for the cap space.Cupboards are absolutely bare at this point. I was surprised to hear LaFell was getting an interview from New England. Of course he did have one of his better games against them.Is there any doubt Nicks ends up in Carolina now? You push Smith out the door, LaFell is walking (no big loss there) and Olsen is the only threat in the passing game. Speaking of Olsen, gotta believe this boosts his value for 2014.
We'll see....I'm not sold on the guy.NCCommish said:Well we do have Godfrey and he was on the upswing prior to the injury.
