****The 2019 Carolina Panthers Thread**** We Rhule At Losing (2 Viewers)

It's not a complete stretch to say the receiving corps is in better shape today than it was last year:

THEN: Smith, LaFell, Ginn, Hixon

NOW: Benjamin, Cotchery, Underwood, Avant (plus extra years of development for King and McNutt -- also GMan acquisions)
Once Cam gets his timing down with the new receivers (which won't begin until training camp due to him rehabbing), I don't think there will be any drop off in WR production. I expect it to be better than last year once they are on the same page. I like the mix of vets and youngsters. Cam also has familiarity and security with Olsen, and I think Olsen will again be a big part of the offense.

I don't mind the WRs at all, they could easily be a step up from last year. My worry is still the OL. Hopefully Turner really helps the run blocking enough that the RBs actually do something to help open up the passing game. If the running game sucks like last year, the worry at OT could really come to fruition. If they start running well, that should take a lot of pressure off of the OTs, who already have a lot before they even step on the field. Compared to their 2009/2011 ypr averages, Stewart and DeAngelo have been average to bad the last couple years. Getting those guys going again would help this team out on D and passing.

So Hardy made bail. 17k. His lawyer claims he was the one who called 911 because she wouldn't leave. And apparently there was alcohol involved, shocking. So Hardy and the woman have both been ordered to attend AA meetings. And the last tidbit to come out is that apparently Hardy has quite the arsenal at the house. Up to 25 guns of various types according to the woman. She got her scratches and bruises by being tossed on the bed where the guns were laying around allegedly.

It sucks to say, but you are better off having domestic problems with your favorite team than drug problems.

Not this team. We had a WR kill his baby momma and we had an RB killed by his wife. If it turns out Hardy has any fault Richardson will want him shipped out and fast. Given Hardy's past I would be shocked if there wasn't some kind of "morals" clause in his tender. This team suffers DUIs and drug use a lot better than any form of domestic violence.

Honestly, I doubt much comes of this. If I'm wrong, I'm sure GMan can find a good use for $13MM. Whether the team would be better off is certainly a stretch, but let's not panic just yet.

Not panicking just saying. Richardson has Rae flashbacks with this stuff.

Marc James last day on wfnz. Word is he's headed to Atlanta…or Gman is continuing to rid the city of anything related to Steve Smith. I still believe the radio show is the reason why Smitty is gone.

He certainly expressed some opinions I am sure others would have liked to see stay in the locker room.

:pickle: Good riddance. Now I can listen again....they should promote Colin from the AM imo. I too believe that him being on the show the way he was lead to DG not wanting him here, at least in part. Just seemed like more ammo for DG. Though, I will say Smith went to the mat for the team during that 1-3 part of the season.

So I guess we will find out what kind of arsenal Hardy has. He has been ordered to turn over all firearms as part of an amended bond order. The girl didn't show up at court and her attorney quit citing "irreconcilable diffrences" so no restraining order was issued against Hardy.

So the news out of camp seems to be Kelvin wowed everyone. Made a one handed catch with two defenders draped on him to close rookie camp. Apparently can run routes and isn't a slobbering moron. So everyone seems pretty happy.

:lmao: :hifive:
Good news. I am still on the skeptical side as news out of pre-season always seems positive. It would be fantastic if Kelvin ends up being as good as the team thinks he will, especially considering their red zone lack of success. Even if he doesn't catch a TD, just realizing (like someone like Calvin - no, he isn't there yet) that he will have to be accounted for will help. Last year, we really didn't have a WR red zone threat, so they keyed on Cam. Even with my skepticism, I thought from the beginning that his red zone ability would improve us. I am just not 100% sure on the 20 to 20 results yet.

Well we all play FF or did. So we know that most receivers take 2-3 years to fully develop. I think he will be a red zone/3rd down threat to start with and hopefully by the end of this season we see him rounding into form so he really comes on next season.

DeAngelo Williams loses mother to breast cancerDeAngelo Williams' mother Sandra Hill has passed away after a long battle with breast cancer...

Cat Scratch Reader faithful, please join me in giving DeAngelo Williams and his family our deepest condolences. After a years-long battle with breast cancer, DeAngelo's mother Sandra Hill passed away around 11:30 this morning after the cancer had recently spread.

DeAngelo's mother had 4 sisters who also fought the disease. Sandra was the only one to live past 50. It is a sad day for one of our all-time greats and his family, and our hearts go out to them.

DeAngelo was one of the main driving forces behind the NFL recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month by allowing players to wear pink on their uniforms during the month of October.

If you would like to become a sponsor for Deangelo's foundation, which funds research into breast cancer, you can visit the site here: The DeAngelo Williams Foundation

Not sure many fans expect him to be more than a redzone threat/distraction year one. He's not AJ Green. If anyone's suggesting that or expecting that they are either doing it as a means to belittle him or don't understand where he's at in his development.

Agreed. You might recall my earlier posts before the draft where I was thinking that with Cam's surgery and limited access to WRs along with all of the attempts to get out from salary cap hell that 2014 is sort of a lost year IMHO. Of course, they will try, but with the OL losses, WR losses, etc., I was hoping the draft was based on getting as much WR/OL talent to get them ready to go for 2015. I was hoping with some of the guys like Richardson, Hurst, Robinson and Bryant, etc. that dropped, they might be perfect for getting up to speed for 2015 and potentially having solid WRs and OTs to move forward with a really young and solid D. I have already come around on Ealy to solidify the DL this year and beyond. I was just hoping for more WRs/OTs, although guys like King, McNutt and Underwood could surprise and do the same.

He doesn't have to be AJ, but I would be disappointed if he isn't starting and contributing a lot year 1. None of the FAs have a leg up on him in Carolina's O or with Cam. None of the guys like McNutt and King have any real game experience. It isn't like he is trying to beat out Smith or LaFell or even Ginn who would have the experience leg up to keep him on the bench.

I am not expecting AJ/Julio performance, because Kelvin is 1.28, not a top 10 pick, but he should get a ton of time to make a real impact.

So reports out of this weeks camp. Bell has been at LT the whole time it appears. So they seem to be serious about that. Cam has been moving around well and Rivera even suggested he may be able to participate in mini camp. He seems to really be trying to develop his chemistry with Benjamin. Cam took Kelvin to his home in Atlanta for Memorial Day weekend and has been staying after practice to throw to him.

The Kraken ain't talking and the team is doing the rally round thing. We won't hear anything else on his case until the hearing I guess. But reports out of camp are he is in shape and focused on football.

I can't remember where, but I swore I saw that Bell and Chandler were splitting LT duties right now, and the loser would probably end up competing with Garry Williams at RT.

You are right I saw another report that said they were splitting reps.

Well yesterday was June 1. So the latest cap numbers are out. Looks like the Panthers are 6.9 million under the cap after getting 2 million back on Smitty and then some on 6 more players.

Does that mean anything? I don't think there are any FAs left to care about. Or could we use it to revamp some contracts to ease the cap pain the next couple years.

At the moment, no....after cuts begin to happen during camps, yes.

Well some of that will belong to our draftees and DG will likely carry over some for emergency. Leaving us enough to possibly grab a serviceable vet OL that gets cut for some young guy. Although it would probably be a depth signing as they seem happy with what they have.

Perhaps. Not sure what we would trade. The guys most likely to get interest on our roster tend to have high price tags. But who knows?

So all the chatter this week is about running a lot of two tight end sets and how the Panthers may keep 5 TE's. Well including Brockel who is more an FB IMO. Rivera talking up a return to 2011. Really two tight ends makes sense. It would help an OL in transition. It would help Cam. It should cause mismatches and opportunities.

Who are the starting wideouts week1?
No clue who the will be, but I would love it to be Benjamin, Underwood and McNutt/King after they thoroughly outplay the other vet FAs they brought in. Probably not join to happen, but it would be great if at least 2 of those 4 really stepped up in camp/pre-season.

Benjamin has been pretty impressive so far. There is a picture of him catching a completely misthrown ball. It is high and behind him. He turned, got up in the air and caught it. Very impressive. Dude really is a pass vacuum so far. But I still think we are going to see a lot of Cotchery and Avant. I wouldn't sleep on the UDFA Ohio St guy either. His name escapes me but there have been several reports of him opening eyes at camp as well. Seems perhaps his 40 time was a fluke at the combine. Everyone talks about how fast he is. I haven't heard anything about McNutt or King that makes me think they are going to be a factor but we'll see once we get to camp. Heck even Brestin got some good comments from Rivera. And of course Underwood is someone they targeted in free agency so I would expect him to get some of the Ginn routes at least in camp.

He's fast...but soft. Not sure how he makes the team with everyone else on the roster unless it's purely for special teams. That is, if you're talking about the Brown kid...forget his first name. Craig maybe?

Philly Brown is it. Actually he was quoted as saying he would be perfectly happy purely in the return role. I don't know about the soft thing but the coaches seemed impressed with him so far.

Thanks for your updates.

Personally I think Cam's right. I don't think these guys will be any worse than last year and in fact are an improvement. Avant is definitely a better receiver than LaFell. Cotchery is a pretty good outside guy. I think Benjamin will come on strong. I think our tight ends will as well. Reports out of OTAs have been about all the new formations the Panthers are running. Sounds like there is a chance the talking heads will be wrong, again.

A few more observations from Wednesday:
  • Guard Chris Scott, who spent last Wednesday working with trainers on conditioning and left practice the previous Wednesday because he was overheated, wasn't on the field. Rivera would not be specific for why Scott was out other than to say it was health related.
  • Third-round draft pick Trai Turner, particularly with Scott out, continues to get the bulk of the work at right guard.
  • Fourth-year player Mario Addison, not second-round draft pick Kony Ealy, worked a lot with the first team at defensive end with Greg Hardy out with a minor leg injury. Hardy, by the way, was expected back Thursday and for next week's minicamp.
  • Neither Rivera nor quarterback Cam Newton could be lured into what Newton called a "pissing match" with former wide receiver Brandon LaFell, now with New England. LaFell said last week that the Patriots' offseason workouts were tougher than what he was used to at Carolina. Rivera wished LaFell well, but insisted his practices were plenty tough enough. Newton said he respects LaFell but he "begged to differ."

Glad to see Cam won't get into the pissing match, but how would he know how tough NE's workouts are?

Maybe the practices are tougher, but the Panthers seem physical enough on the field that it may not matter.

It's really more a matter of Lafell continuing to say things that seem like digs. I still can't tell if it's intentional or not. But no player is going to say their camp isn't as tough as someone else's anyway.

Atlanta gets Hard Knocks. They could have turned it down under the new rules but didn't. I think after last year they figured they needed to turn up the volume on the brand. Personally wouldn't care if this circus never touched down in Charlotte.

If you like updates on CAR check out http://blackandbluereview.com/ some of it is fluffy stuff but it's 100% panthers. He has some good takes on the press conference that Cam had in how he is exhibiting better leadership.

So Marty Hurney has a radio show. First guest was Ron Rivera. Sounds like it was pretty easy going interview. He started off by praising Ron for moving the practices earlier to avoid the heat. Be interesting to see what Marty has to say when we get into real playing time and there is a need to perhaps be critical.

That's not who they replaced Vanilla Ice with on 610 is it?
