****The 2019 Carolina Panthers Thread**** We Rhule At Losing (2 Viewers)

So Marty Hurney has a radio show. First guest was Ron Rivera. Sounds like it was pretty easy going interview. He started off by praising Ron for moving the practices earlier to avoid the heat. Be interesting to see what Marty has to say when we get into real playing time and there is a need to perhaps be critical.
That's not who they replaced Vanilla Ice with on 610 is it?
It's him and Gardner from 1 to 3 on WBT. Chris Kroeger took over WFNZ "Prime Time".

That the App State dude? Does "Prime Time" mean they are coming back with guest hosts like they did with Packman? I loved that format.

Not sure, I don't listen to the show.

Can't imagine Hurney lasting as long in this gig as his last. Not sure football has the year round drawing power in this market yet. That said, so glad they dumped Glenn to give it a go. I just don't have that much interested in Triad sports year round.

Well given he has a cohost maybe they do general sports with a local angle as much as possible?

Nate Chandler, Colin Jones and Mario Addison all sign extensions. Only numbers I saw were for Chandler. 3 years, 7.8 million with 1.8 million in guarantees. I guess they are convinced he will hold down one of the tackle spots. Sounds like he may be getting the right side with Bell battling Williams for the left. But we won't really know for a while yet.

So it's dead time in the NFL that means lists. So we end up with Cam as the top 3rd tier QB. Really all the guy has done is set record after record but he is third tier. Then we have the reigning DPOY rated 15th on another list. Really? 15? I mean I know that list will be QB heavy at the top but this guy was DROY and then DPOY again doing things that all time greats haven't done.

Some great quotes about Luke though:

  • Panthers’ long snapper J.J. Jansen: “He’s in total control of the defense. From the preparation in the week leading up to it, to the game, it’s so cool to watch because at age 22 or 23, everyone looks to basically the youngest guy in the room.”
  • Colts’ linebacker D’Qwell Jackson: “He’s always in the right place at the right time.”
  • Falcons’ receiver Roddy White: “Luke Kuechly is a tackling machine.”
  • Kalil, part 1: “There’s definitely no way I could do what he does endurance-wise. If I had to do a quarter of what Luke Kuechly does, I think I’d have a full-time oxygen tank. And you’d probably have to bring me out on a golf cart.”
  • Kalil, part 2: “All-around, All-American Luke Kuechly — he’s not even like a real person. He’s kind of made up.”
  • Giants linebacker, and Kuechly’s former Boston College teammate Mark Herzlich: “Off the field he’s a choir boy. You have all this curly hair and glasses and people are like, ‘Is this guy for real?’ He has a tenacity about him which I think is reminiscent of **** Butkus.”
  • Rams linebacker James Laurinaitis: “I heard one of their DBs say, ‘It’s kind of like Madden. Create a player. Create 99 everything and you just make every tackle.’”

Got to have lunch with Ken Dorsey today. Well not just me but our Optimist Club. It was a nice talk. We got to hear some tales of his college adventures and time in SF, Cleveland and the CFL. He said the CFL team used two double wides as their "facility". One served as locker room the other as meeting rooms. Far cry from the Panthers. He also spent some time as a high school coach. He told a story about a player they were trying to get motivated and nothing worked. Guy had loads of talent but no drive. So his position coach called his wife. Apparently dude became a very hard worker the next day. Whenever he would slack the coach would remind him he still had the wife's number. No this wasn't on the Panthers.

Now these guys from the Panthers come talk to us regularly. They can't really say much in depth. But he was asked the big question - what about the receiver corps? He didn't say they were more talented overall now but he did talk about how favorably their numbers compare. And he did say from what he has seen Benjamin is a number 1 receiver today. He has been playing at all the WR positions and that his potential was off the charts.

Homers, any thoughts about Brandon Williams and whether he could realize some latent potential? Could see him becoming the #2 TE and #2 TD threat. (well, 3 behind Cam)

Well they brought in Ed Dickson for a reason. But I have read various reports that he has really started to get into the groove. I still think he is a season away from being a real threat but that doesn't mean he won't get chances.

Do you expect much from Dickson? I don't.

I expect Olsen to be the guy. But if Dickson can perform at least as well as Jeremy Shockey then I expect that level of numbers from him. If he can't someone else will get to play. One of the things that came up in our lunch today was two tight end sets and what was said led me to believe they really want it to be a big part of the offense. They feel it gives them a ton of options with the guys they have. So Dickson will step up a bit or they will bring in someone else. They will have 7 tight ends in camp. Someone is going to get some catches as the number two TE.

Hardy trial starts today, right?
Yep. I think they went bench trial. It's going to be big time he said she said. Apparently both have witnesses to back their stories. And Hardy is the one who called 911. So we'll see. The football problem here is this was the last day to get a deal done and maybe mitigate the cap hit on the tag. Doesn't look like that will happen.

So according to Jackie Slater, a guy who knows a thing or two about playing tackle, Nate Chandler has all the tools and athleticism to be a starting left tackle. Apparently Nate has been working out with Jackie the last two seasons and has impressed the heck out of him. If he can make the move the Panthers got a steal for that 3 year they gave him.

Hardy found guilty. 18 months supervised probation. I really am not sure what I think of the verdict. This woman attacked him two days before in front of witnesses. He called the police and begged them to come get her. But it's on him. I guess it could be. I am wondering if he will say he wants a jury now? He still has that option.

Hardy's an #######.

State: You had alcohol.

Hardy: Champagne.

State: Is champagne alcohol?

Hardy: You tell me.

State: OK we'll move on
Can't make this stuff up: Greg Hardy's Range Rover was towed today from the Mecklenburg County Courthouse. Apparently the meter had expired.
Really not a fan of the process. Go to a judge, be found guilty. Then go to a jury hoping for a different result. I'm all for appeals for mistakes of law, but not the second chance to get an acquittal. Should have to choose jury or judge before the trial. Unless I'm missing something here.

Would completely understand if this were a preliminary hearing, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Two TE sets make sense given their personnel - lack of receivers and relatively weak OL, plus it provides Cam more space to maneuver. Just seems to me that Williams could easily be that #2 TE.

after reading the details of the trial yesterday I was flabbergasted that he was convicted, then I saw he had a female judge and it all made sense. What a crock of ####

It's the way it works. I agree you should have to choose and run with that. I would have gone jury to start with. There is enough here to cast doubt that anyone is telling the whole truth. It seems like a wash to me at best.

I think the problem here was he did the bold after a "scuffle" in the house. It's clear to me that neither one of these two have elevators going to the top floor. Throw in alcohol and it's a recipe for disaster. It's probably the best type of "conviction" he could get though. It's certainly cost him some money going forward. How much? Who knows? I didn't really expect him to walk away from this unscathed.

I think the Panthers would be thrilled. I just think he is still a bit green. However they say his blocking has improved as has his route running. Still that's not in pads. A lot of questions answered in the next few weeks.

Richardson is very sensitive to domestic violence for obvious reasons. You can punch a teammate in the face but not your girlfriend/wife. I could see him telling DG to move on without Hardy after this season. Ealy pick looking better by the minute.

Maybe, I think it depends on the type of year he has. Tough to let a player of his caliber just walk.

I'd imagine Rae Carruth still weighs on JR's mind. I don't think it would be as tough as you think.

Yeah I wouldn't be at all surprised if he had a good season and they still cut him. But if he does play lights out he has a better chance at a reprieve I would think. JR is also getting older and wants a trophy before he goes.

Certainly be tough to let go, that's for sure. If I had to guess, if this jury trial goes better for him and he's cleared, he plays well DG will offer him a contract with "home town discount" the driving factor. He doesn't take and he moves on. Gives them an out on just bailing on him.

Well the jury trial is unlikely to happen during the season. Just given the fact that the courts are so underfunded it may be after the Super Bowl. During that time all the probation stuff is suspended. I think there will be a come to Jesus meeting with the commissioner but the NFL will wait for the court to play out because while Hardy has done some silly things none of them rise to this level. I think he will argue he didn't do it and that the NFL should wait. Unless they just want to spend money on lawyers they probably will.

I was doing some reading around and apparently the rumor is the Panthers view this as a one year deal. Allegedly there have been no talks on an extension. It is possible the plan was to shed Hardy before this happened. Pick up Ealy who you think is a first round talent, give him a year to learn the system, cut your cap number and keep Johnson who doesn't get into trouble. Getting Ealy could have made that the plan.

Anyone going to Fan Fest this year? Might be fun to see all the new stuff at the stadium. I am thinking about it. Maybe ride in on the train.

I'm planning on going with a buddy if I get off work at a good time.

So as I suspected the league said no action on Hardy until the jury trial. That won't happen until after the season. The league prefers in most cases for teams not to go over them and punish a player themselves. The Panthers won't be, they are letting the league take the lead. So barring any more trouble or an injury Hardy should play the whole season. I will still not be surprised if this is just a 1 year rental.

Stewart tweaked hamstring, here we go again.
Damn, was really hoping he could finally get together. D-Will is on tap for a lot of work.
Yeah it definitely sucks.

I am intrigued by a UDFA RB we picked up named Darrin Reaves, I think he may better a RB than Gaffney. I think Gaffney is a FB at this level. Reaves seems faster and has great body control. Does a good job making defenders set then running away from them. Panthers might have stolen one there.

Well I didn't go but I watched some of the practice online. Barner made a really nice catch, The ball was a little long and coming over his shoulder, Wasn't an easy catch. But I didn't see everything so someone may have topped it. Cam looked like the ankle wasn't a big deal.

So some more notes from the fan fest from around the web.

Slightly over 36k showed filling the entire lower bowl and parts of the upper apparently. Cam led several waves during practice. Cam also stated a couple of times he is still not 100%.

Amini and Turner looking like your starting guards as of now. Kalil was very complimentary of Turner and how quickly he is picking it up. Still rotating Bell and Chandler when the ones are out.

Young receiver that won this practice was Bersin. He as Rivera's choice for player who stood out. Cam and Benjamin hooked up for a nice deep catch. Dickson made some nice catches. He even stiff armed Decoud to get into the end zone. Olsen also looked good with a couple of deep catches.Williams hands looked better but still stiff running the routes. I just think he is another year away from really getting it all going. Barner also had a drop on a slightly off pass. It seems they really want him to catch some balls based on the patterns he is running. They are not screens but deeper passes.

Cam was the last one to stop signing autographs.

Hate to see anyone get hurt. But it's a pretty crowded backfield really. I would assume anybody they bring is going to be cheap and probably camp fodder.

Wharton retired. Wharton and Gross retiring leaves some big shoes to fill on the OL.
Well apparently the Panthers only made a token effort to get Wharton signed so they think they are good to go. I would have liked to have him one more year. But he isn't gone completely he will cohost Gross' new show.

I didn't know Gross is having a show. What kind of show is it?

Tough luck for #Panthers RB Tyler Gaffney, missing year w knee injury. Not a finesse back so risk of less explosion not as career-altering.
Can someone confirm this?
@SteveReedAP: Panthers lose rookie RB Tyler Gaffney (6th round pick) for the season with a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee. http://t.co/pwSi1fRwMT
So apparently the Panthers tried to slip Gaffney through waivers and he got claimed by the Pats.

Isn't the normal process just to have the surgery and put him on IR? I don't get it.

I'm still a little miffed about not selecting an OT there. A couple of decent ones who I'd rather have taken a chance on versus a RB, who is now no longer even on the team before the 1st pre-season game.

I agree -- I found the Gaffney pick head scratching as well... definitely would have liked to have seen more OL depth.
