The Audible - NFL Draft Talk Live! - 2/19/09 (1 Viewer)

Does Matt have to go thru an intiation in Cecil's 5(?) man football league?

How many(and which) WRs are ready now to contribute significantly in the NFL?

Jacobs, Ward, McClain.... what college backs are big backs teams might go after to be a big bruiser?

If you're Jim Schwarz and changing the mindset is of such huge importance(to fans, to potential free agents, to current players) that you have to "hit" on every pick, what would you do in this draft? Stay away from skill position players and think hardhat types? Meaning no chance in "beanie" or "crabtree" but, they sure could take a top T or DT and follow that up with a top C or G as they often fall to the late first or early 2nd anyhow. There's no mistaking the Titans and Pats (where Schwarz is from)both have good trenches. Is that the best method in today's NFL to build a team?

Is it true that your show was listed as some "pork" in the stimulus package and you now have several billion to broadcast it worldwide? Do you think that would be better spending than some of it?

Most importantly, which rookie will be the first jersey Cecil buys?

In this draft class are there any positions with more than usually quality, allowing teams to wait and let the draft come to them in addressing needs and conversely are there positions where if you have a need you really only have two or three impact players to pick from (from an NFL perspective) - excluding kickers (sorry Mike Herman)

Hey Guys,

Looking forward to the show. Putting on the KC thinking-cap this morning… this is one of the more intriguing stories of 2009. Here’s what we know:

1- new GM Pioli

2- new HC Haley

3- top 5 draft pick

4- $35 million under the cap

I’m curious about how this is actually going to play out, but let’s have some fun too.

First question:

Do Pioli & Haley keep Tyler Thigpen? And on a related note, do they keep Chan Gailey?

And if you were the new GM/Coach what would you guys do?

The answer to that question should be the first domino to fall and should provide valuable insight into the Chiefs’ subsequent decisions, right?

Second question:

Presented with the opportunity to draft Michael Crabtree, does “PioHaley” pull the trigger? Again, if you were the new KC GM/Coach, would you guys draft Crabtree?

The real question being, do they build slowly by upgrading the defense piece-by-piece or do they take steps to make one aspect of the team very strong…. Bowe, Gonzo and Crabtree would look a lot like what Haley had in ARZ with Fitz, Boldin, Breaston, would it not?

Third question:

Are there free agents available that make the Chiefs a significantly better team right away? Is that a consideration for PioHaley? Would it be a consideration for you guys?

That AFC West was pretty bad last year…and there are some names available in free agency: TJ Houzhmandzadeh, Julius Peppers, Derrick Ward, and Matt Cassell (not a FA, but available for the right price). Can one or more of these guys change the balance of power in the West?

Fourth question:

What rookie and/or free agent linemen (offense or defense) could the Chiefs acquire to significantly upgrade their lines? Are there players likely to be available in the second and third rounds that you believe would prove better than the Chiefs’ current starters? Are there any such free agents?

The Chiefs are below average along the offensive and defensive lines.

Clearly I’ve had too much coffee this morning, but this situation is just too juicy too ignore. Seems to me that we’ll soon find out whether the Chiefs will employ an “inside-out” strategy of drafting/spending on the interior (like in New England, when Pioli drafted a lot of beef in the middle with Seymour and Wilfork); or whether KC will attack on the outside by acquiring firepower at WR and/or QB (like Haley had in ARZ). What would you guys do?

There has been quite a bit of discussion in regards to Matt Cassel. Some are quick to point out that Cassel played in a familiar system with great talent around him while ignoring that many of the highly rated QB's coming out of college are in a similar situation. What are couple of factors you all look at in evaluating talent that might transcend a particular system and accompanying talent level that puts one player above another? What are the great equalizers?

Can you offer a quick hindsight look at Xavier Oman? Can he develop enough of a burst to be effective in the NFL?

With Matt in tonight I fully expect to hear a little "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down". After all, we all need to mix up a little potion now and then!!!

YouTube Scouting

Let's face it, most of us FBGs don't have access to game film, so the only "film" we see of college players is on YouTube. Can you give us some tips on what to look for (and what to be wary of) when "scouting" players on YouTube.

It would be great if you would break down "YouTube Scouting" for a different position each week. I'd love it if you started with the RBs.

For example, I watched YouTube highlights for the main RB prospects. Here is what I came away with:

Wells - looks like a man among boys; brutal stiff-arm; ability to break off long runs; looks like Jamal Lewis; may have the same type of career (2000 yard season and then injury-filled seasons); can't quite see why some are so down on him.

Moreno - nothing jumped out to me at all; nothing special, but maybe that's because he's just a natural runner; I don't see how he's #1 for fantasy.

McCoy - loved what I saw; the cutting and agility looked great; he looked fast; it looked like he ran inside and out; it's hard for me to not put him at #1.

Greene - again, loved what I saw; partly, it was because he ran out of a familiar pro-style set and he always seemed to be gaining yards

Would love to hear your thoughts on how to scout RBs on YouTube!

First, and again.....welcome to the #1 team in fantasy sports, Matt. Your friends at FFtoday miss you (as you probably know, Cuse9 is going through his "Wildman" withdrawals).

Please discuss Chris Wells and Shon Greene as PPR prospects. They'll be long gone before I pick (10th of 12) anyway, but do you see these two becoming 3 down backs here sooner ......or later.

I know it is very early (pre-combine / predraft) but is it ever too early to 'fantasize?' Somaybe you could give me your thoughts about about 4 players I am interested in and if I'm close at all in my thinking.

Two other players I am interested in hearing your comparison about are Britt vs Robiskie. Am I the only one that sees lots of similarities between these two? I'm thinking one of those two will be there when I draft at the 10 spot.

Am I too high on Jennings as a PPR RB? I like him for the 2nd round (15th pick) of of rookie draft. Could he a solid value at about that spot? Given the shortage or RBs relative to WRs in the draft, would you target him over a Jarrett Dillard?

I'll be lisnin'........As always - you guys ROCK!

Hi guys,

Love the shows grab them off of iTunes and listen to them to/from work. So now for the questions.

Two teams are making the switch to the 3-4 KC and GB and I don't think their current personnel seem to fit the scheme.

So what players on the team get a bump/stay/traded/etc.?

Who do you think they will make a play for in the FA market?

How do you think this effects the draft? Is Raji from BC looking good in GB cause others to slide?

Thanks,

Gentlemen:

Thanks for all you do -- I found footballguys.com via The Audible podcasts, and am thrilled to be widening my FF depth here -- it's awesome, and I really appreciate it. The fact that you're my fellow STEELER fans makes it all the better!

My questions revolve around shifting backfields, and what the best case scenarios might be for (A) the NFL franchises themselves, (B) Fantasy Owners, and © whether or not any possible scenarios could be best case for both.

1. Jacksonville: with Fred Taylor gone how does MJD's value change? Is Greg Jones' proposed (by Del Rio) 5-10 touches per game ideal in either case? Will JAX move to draft a bruiser instead, and if so who/when? Which would be more helpful to MJD (assuming the O-line is healthy): a complimentary "2-punch" to his "1," or a more viable passing game with an improved #1 WR?

2. Houston: Opinions run pretty consistently that Steve Slaton will have company in '09. Like Jacksonville, they may be best served by adding a bruiser via free agency and/or the draft. Who makes the most sense in Houston's case, and how do you think Slaton's value changes?

3. If Cedric Benson is the answer in Cincinnati, are the Bengals asking the right question?

Thanks, Men!

The Riv (a.k.a. Michael)

I didn't think of this 'til I was reading a mock on NFL.com yesterday, but why does hardly anyone have Raji going to Seattle at #4? If he is as good as advertised a stud DT shouldn't be falling to #9 or #10. And Seattle's defense was strictly dookie last year. Their passing game should be okay if not great with some players back from injury in 2009 and Carlson a hit. They can pick one of many WRs in the 2nd rather than the generic Crabtree pick.

Hey guys,

How was the trip out to Big Bend? Did you get to spend some time in Terlingua? Some nice haunts there.

Don't want to break up the draft talk too much, but we have free agency going on in one of my leagues. IDP dynasty we keep 53...non ppr.

Could you give me your low down on the Tampa qb situation: Josh Johnson & Luke McCown are both available. Which

one should I set my sights on?

Also like your input on Chaz Schilens wr oak and Hali, Tamba KCC DE

Thanks for all your help...you make FF much more fun...

Time to take take that long sip of Jack Black old no 7....

Even if Arizona gets Warner back for another season, who are the top prospects you'd like to see them make a run at? We all now the next QB is not on their roster today. I would love to see Leftwich and his strong arm throwing to Fitz/Boldin and little B.

sorry I missed it guys

I was enjoying the small town craziness that is the high school basketball playoffs in my area.

I'll try to download and also listen next week
