The Avengers (1 Viewer)

Just got back and really loved it. Whedon's story telling and writing style was all over this.I have one question that I either missed or was not explained well

How did Stark know that Banner would come back and would have semi control of the Hulk?
I don't think there is a clear answer to this, at least not directly provided by the movie. Maybe intuition, maybe something he saw looking at tape of the Hulk (Banner seems to infer that Stark thinks Hulk saved his life somehow during his initial gamma exposure), maybe just a leap of faith. Also, Stark seems to just be fascinated by the power and wants to see it close up.
The only extremely marginal thing I could come up with is Banner realized something when the old guy told him he seemed to go out of his way to not hurt anyone when he fell from the ship. I thought maybe it made Banner realize that he could some what control the hulk. I know it is a huge stretch but I can't make any other connection nor can I figure out why the scene with the old guy telling him that was in the movie if not for that marginal connection.
Yeah, the scene with the old man was supposed to reconnect Hulk/Banner with his humanity. Banner could feel okay letting Hulk go, not controlling him but trusting him to do the right thing when push comes to shove.Possibly my favorite moment of the movie is at the end when they resolve the whole, "what's your secret?" subplot. Tremendous writing/acting there IMO.

My 5 year old daughter has shown some interest. Yes or No
Personally I say no. Extremely loud, lots of blow ups, a very scary (for a 5 year old) and surprise impaling.Wait a few years and the do it right and watch all the movies with her. My daughter enjoyed this so much more because she watched all the previous movies (Iron Man, Thor, etc).

:goodposting: Local theater had a deal where $40 let you see Iron Man, Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, and then the midnight showing of Avengers. I had not seen all of the Hulk, nor any of Thor and Captain America, and I am sure I enjoyed Avengers more having seen all of the others leading up to it. After 13 hours and a veritable lake of Coke though, my perception of reality may have been slightly altered.

I hope to this today. A question for those that have seen it, and not asking for a spoiler, how was the Stan Lee cameo? Did most in the audience see him? Did it get a reaction?

This was the first movie I've been to since The Return of the Jedi when I was a kid where the audience applauded. More than once, even.

:jawdrop: id need more than a few valiums to sit thru 13 hours of that...wow

Stan Lee cameo got a big reaction, everybody saw him.
i didn't. not a comic book guy, so don't know what he looks like. what scene was he in?
Was at the end when they were showing all the tv clips of various people talking about the battle. He was the old guy who said something like "SuperHeroes in Manhatten, no way". Got a nice cheer from my audiance. He has a cameo in almost every marvel film.

Both after credit scenes were a little let down...... But they had a tough act to follow a amazing movie.
I thought the second one was absolutely brilliant. It was set up perfectly during the movie. The few people that were smart enough to hang around in my theater really liked it.

very very good. marvel just knows what they are doing
I wish they still owned the rights to Spiderman and the X-Men. I'd love to see what they'd do with those.
who owns the right
Sony owns Spiderman's rights. The rights were about to expire and go back to Marvel, but they wanted to keep the rights so they made te new reboot Spiderman flick that's coming out this year. A little bush league, but smart on Sony's part. Imagine if during Avengers that Spidey would've swung into the battle out of nowhere. The theater would've GONE NUTS.

There is also a tie between Avengers and XMen in that Magneto's twin children are members of the Avengers at one point. I think Fox still owns the X-Men rights.

Yeah as far as I know Fox still owns the X-men.

About the second scene:

if you don't want to be spoiled about the second scene don't click the next link:

The 6 heroes are at the local "Schwarma" Deli that Tony Start mentioned and they are just there eating. It was really funny and tongue in cheek.
DAMN!!! I didn't realize there was a second scene during the credits. :kicksrock:

LOL. Many, many moons ago my cousin and I sat through all five Planet of the Apes movies back to back. No valiums, but I think I remember my knuckles being kinda scraped up when we got home.

Not that there ever any doubt, but damn this thing is going to make some serious money. From boxofficemojo:

The Avengers scored $61.8 million during the day on Friday, which obliterates Spider-Man 3's previous [Friday] record of $49.8 million.Since midnight grosses were only a small part of The Avengers' tally on Friday [$80.5 Million], it's unlikely that demand is even close to satisfied at this point. Using past summer kick-off comic book movies as a comparison, The Avengers has a legitimate shot at reaching $200 million this weekend. Even if it doesn't get quite that high, it is practically a mathematical certainty that The Avengers winds up setting a new opening weekend record ahead of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2's $169.2 million.

Taking my nine year old to see this Saturday. It's his first super hero movie, and I expect him to #### his pants.
I took my 9 year old and my 10 year old sons yesterday afternoon and they had no problems. YMMV
I am so anal about this stuff I won't let my daughter watch something unless she has seen the lead ups. I think she enjoys the movies much more. Especially an ensemble movie like this I think it really helps to know the characters else all it is an explosion fest.

His "fight" with Loki resulted in nearly a full minute of applause/laughter in my theater. So great.
"Puny god" :lmao:
Was that Hulk's quote after he tossed Loki around like a ragdoll? Too much laughing and cheering to hear him.
Tony Stark: "or a big bag of weed" was another great line. The mrs missed that one from all the laughing.

so..greatest superhero movie of all time, greatest action movie of all time, or greatest movie of all time? Where does this stand?

Second question

who was the villain in the first after credit scene that was used to set up the squeal?
Thanos. One of my favorite villain, and he's more of a God than Thor or Loki is.

This was a great movie, but not perfect.

the humor was good but at times a little campy.

the gag when Loki went to put his spell on Stark but his staff tapped the thing in Stark's chest was funny, but it kinda killed the drama that had built up. Also the Hulk/Loki scene was funny, but for such a crucial scene in the movie, I would have done it a bit more seriously instead of going for a laugh. maybe Loki's bully comment is cut off by Hulk growling, a flash of Hulk's snaring face coming towards the screen(Loki) with some good 3D, and Hulk slams Loki and the wall and then destroys him, instead of the comedic rag doll way it was done. imo.

The biggest problem I had with it was with Iron Man taking the bomb through the portal... the bomb blows up the planet(?) and all the aliens on Earth fall dead... wtf? That would make sense if they were robots and their command center was blown up, but they're life forms, not robots. That seemed like a lazy way of killing of the aliens already on Earth.

Oh yeah, something else that didn't make sense:

How can Thor survive being thrown around by Hulk but not be able to survive dropping out of the plane in the cage? he had to 'escape' before it hit ground, but after surviving Hulk the cage hitting ground should be a walk in the park.

I think it's easily the best superhero and action movie of all time. Greatest movie is a stretch though.I am a much bigger DC fan than Marvel and up until the Iron Man movies was not really a fan. The Dark Knight and Batman Begins had been my #1/2 comic book movies, that has changed. This movie was simply amazing, characters were very good with the Hulk being the best. It's nice to see that character finally get the right treatment in a movie. I had read somewhere, forget where now, that Mark Ruffalo signed a 6 film deal when he signed for the Avengers. Would love to see him as the Hulk in a stand alone Hulk movie.I absolutely love the first scene after the trailer, sets up a great followup and loved the second one as well. I will be taking my two boys 7 and 8 tomorrow morning and can't wait to see it again. For me the only movie that could potentially top this would be a JLA movie, which will very likely never happen.

Could be they were under the control by Thanos. He is a demi-God.

Was not a fan of standing in line an hour early to get in, but this instantly became one of my favorite movies ever. Perfectly done popcorn action/witty comedy film.

This is a good movie. Not a comic book nurd here, but I really liked the film for what it was. Sure there are some holes but let's face, we're talking about comic book heros. I hope they make more.

Avengers was really good, but it's not better than Dark Knight.
The movies should not be compared. One is fun and filled with humor and one is driven on darkness. I enjoyed them both but for extremely different reasons.
Yeah, totally different extremes of the same genre. Marvel has been purposeful in going with a lighter tone, and I think it serves this group of characters well. There are some Marvel characters that could have that same gritty pseudo-reality treatment that Nolan used so effectively in Dark Knight, but with Hulk, Thor and Iron Man it would be ridiculous. Both are great in their own way. Though I do have to say, for pure entertainment and joy, I'd probably watch Avengers 9 times out of 10 over Dark Knight. The other time I'd likely be drunk and pissed off about something.

Pleasantly surprised when I went tonight. I ended up seeing it in 3D cause I did not want to be there till eleven at night. A great character mix with each getting a decent amount of screen time. Whedon did a great job doing this movie.

Why have Gweneth but no Portman? Rather see Portman.

Hulk was well done and maybe the better character in this movie. Black Widow was well done and not sure if she needs a stand alone movie but Scarlett did a great job with her.

Not sure of the back story of the new villain but do The Avengers only fight God like enemies? And, a cameo by Spider-Man would have been awesome to see. Maybe in a future one.

They made a pretty good point with Tony, in that Capt America, and others, chastising him for being selfish and everything being about him, then at the end Tony was taking one for the team and the world by taking the nuke to the other dimension. Good character development.

you need to stick with chick flicks

Pots is more important to Tony, and Downey Jr was adamant that she play a part in this movie because she is so integral to Tony.

I really liked this as well.
I also liked that Tony deferred to Rogers for the plan of attack on the aliens.

You must not be a comic book fam if the first one did not get you excited for seeing the big purple jawed guy next time around. Some of the best Marvel crossovers EVER involve that guy...

To say this has done phenomenal box office business would be an understatement.

It is already the 55th highest grossing movie of all time Internationally

It just shat all over the domestic opening weekend record by getting 200 million
