The best moments on Dexter (1 Viewer)

Ghost Rider

Footballguy
First ones I thought of:

-The "Hello, Dexter Morgan" scene, where Trinity finds out Dexter's real name.

-When Dexter headbutted Doakes in his lab room and then walked out in to the squad room, provoking him into attacking him in front of everyone in the homicide department, making it look like he did it unprovoked.

Far too many to list but off the top of my head:

Rita's death

Every single thing about Dexter vs. Doakes when Doakes was in the cage.

Doakes pointing to his eyes and letting Dexter know he was watching him.

"Hello, Dexter Morgan."

Dexter opening the bathroom door and seeing Harrison in the pool of Rita's blood. "Born in blood."

Such a shame that the writers of that show lost their way. I truly loved the first few seasons. It was clear, at the end, they had no idea how to finish it off strong. Reminded me too much of Lost and not enough of Six Feet Under.

Rita's death was the turning point for me. I don't think the show was ever as good after that although I enjoyed it more than most in this forum did. I think they came up with a truly memorable moment to top an amazing season and didn't know where to go after that.

Lumen season was ok. After that is when the nightmare really starts.

If they had ended it when Rita died, then all is good.

That was my least favorite of the post Season-4 seasons. And I like Julia Stiles too.

Agree if they had ended it with Rita's death and the kid paralelling Dexter's beginning that would've been an incredible way to go out.

Last season when he sits down to do a DNA swab test with the brain surgeon.

"What are you doing?"

Dexter places a pen down " I'm going to kill you with this pen.

That or when he worked over that guy who was abusing his daughter. BAD &$#

Rita's death was such a huge moment to write towards, it was painfully clear that the writers didn't have something to focus on and write towards after that.

Without the feeling like it's going somewhere, "Dexter" just became a poorly written show with bad plot holes and incredibly annoying narration. It always had those problems, but they were telling an interesting story, so it didn't matter.

It's hard to go more than 5-6 seasons for these shows. I think if they'd gone 5 seasons, killing Rita at the end of S3 and bringing Deb into the fold in S4, they could've ended up with a much more powerful series overall.

Agree 100%. Wrap that #### up after 6 seasons and move on to your next show. This isn't a sitcom that can go on forever with no plot.

Killing Rita was a great resolution to the trinity storyline, but it kind of sucks that she died without ever finding out who and what Dexter really was. To me, that was one of those "I can't wait to see what happens when that happens" moments that never happen cause they killed her off.

Frankly, I liked that she never found out. She had way too much undeserved #### happen to her.

We can always imagine that Trinity told her.

That's probably true.

Doakes pointing to his eyes and letting Dexter know he was watching him.
I could probably list every scene involving Doakes. Totally awesome character.
Hard to argue with that. Doakes was an awesome character, and every time he and Dexter verbally sparred, it was money.
The nature of their relationship meant there was no way Doakes could be on the show for too long. But that did suck because like you said they were terrific together. Characters, actors, writing, everything. Doakes was the perfect opponent for Dexter to spar with.

Some real romanticizing of Doakes going on up in here. His character was ridiculous too, he just appeared in the beginning of the series. If he was added in seasons 7 and 8 then y'all would've been big Doakes haters.

Context matters. Sure, it helped that he was there when the writing was super awesome, but the dynamic between him and Dexter helped make those first two seasons so great. Plus, with how far the writing slid, it's doubtful they could have added Doakes in the last two seasons and made him as good a character as he was in 1 and 2.

Favorite moment of Dexter was binge-watching Season 2 on Netflix 4 years ago. Each episode ended with a larger cliff-hanger. I started watching weekly in Season 4 and man it was so hard to wait every week!

I was lucky in that I didn't watch any of it till the last few months, so I binge-watched pretty much all of it. Given that, it had to suck for longtime viewers to have to wait a week for every ####ty episode those last few seasons, especially after being invested in the show for 7+ years.

I defy anyone who was a fan of Dexter to go back and re-watch Season 2 when Dexter captured Doakes and had him in the cell and not appreciate how great all that was. That was outstanding television in my opinion.

I binge watched a lot of shows for their first few seasons to ultimately catch up. Dexter was one. 24 and Breaking Bad were two others. All of those shows were tailor made for binge watching when they were at their best (Breaking Bad was always great).

Very true. Great stuff.

My only beef with that whole sequence is, when he first caught, Doakes tells Dexter, "Kill me now or let me go." But when Doakes escapes, is captured by those drug guys, and Dexter then helps him kill them, Dexter puts the gun on Doakes, and the next thing we know, Doakes is back in the cage. Are we really supposed to believe that Doakes would just allow Dexter, even at gunpoint, to just put him back in the cage? No way. Doakes likely would have charged Dexter and made him kill him right then and there, rather than be put back in the cage.

Good point.

Intense, exciting, but seriously flawed shows just won't hold up to the week-to-week internet scrutiny.

I binged the first 5 seasons of 24 and the first 4 of Dexter. Instead of spending time pondering how tight the plot was of each episode, I just hit play because I really wanted to see what happened next.

When binging, you can also just power through a bad storyline.

While those represent the very best of those two shows, I can imagine I'd have gotten annoyed watching them week to week.

Gotta add another: the Rudy reveal as the Ice Truck Killer. Just an amazing moment. We go from Dexter killing that psychiatrist to Debra singing Make Me Lose Control to the Rudy reveal, all in the span of about two minutes. Amazing writing.
