The Bill Simmons Podcast (2 Viewers)

When he has Haralabos Voulgaris on his podcast it is just startling the distinct difference in knowledge. Does he just laugh at Simmons off air?

Sinmons: Marcus Smart is just out there doing things. Things you can't measure. Marcus Smart things. Analytics just can't measure him.

HV: actually he's the perfect player to be measured by analytics.

I've skipped over so many podcasts recently because I have just a passing interest in the NBA. My question though...do even the most NBA obsessed fans want to hear 3 podcasts a week from him about the league?

I don't listen to most of them. I knew the one the other day would be good as that guy just completely dwarfs his knowledge.

I'm not a big NBA fan, but used to listen to The Starters 2-3 times per week because they're funny.  They covered multiple topics, though - Bill just covers the MVP race all season.

i listen any time haralabob is on (sadly not enough), but in general, listening to Nate Duncan and a Sixers' podcast is plenty for me.

This was a perfect example of the entire podcast.

Normally I don't get annoyed with Simmons as quickly as others, but this podcast in particular just had me shaking my head.

Simmons: There are certain teams that can just go small and you can't stop them: Golden State, Houston ..... the Celtics. And there are certain teams that can just go big: Milwaukee, Utah ....... the Celtics. I think only these teams can win it all: Warriors, Cleveland ......the Celtics

Yep. It was particularity annoying this podcast. I only listen to Bill if he has a good guest (players, HV, etc). I skip over anytime he's talking to House or his other buddies, they're actually less informed then you twats or my buddies.

Lots of good nuggets in the NFL draft pod

Simmons: I saw Watson's over/under at 25. That's crazy to me... He's Lombardi's favorite quarterback...

Sal: will garropolo get traded

BS: oh he's not getting traded

Sal: guess the odds

BS: -350

Sal: -1400

BS: ...OH!

He's as good as on hiatus until the National Football League returns

Magary got into Lombardi today

DM: Where the #### am I? :lmao:

that Lombardi article was relentlessly horrible.
holy #### there's another one.  have you seen this ####?

Thankfully, Bill Belichick and I were always on the same page. When Bill joined the Browns in 1991, the two of us spent the better part of his first season designing our grading system. We wanted to define the prospect’s role on our team, and we wanted to predict how long it would take for him to achieve that role. That’s it. Instead of predicting rounds, our system forced our scouts to grade every player as (1) a starter, (2) a potential starter, (3) a developmental player, (4) a backup, or (5) someone who couldn’t make any NFL team. In Belichick’s room, no one was permitted to mention rounds — that job was for useless coffee-guzzling scouts and cliché-spouting TV commentators.

Scanning the new Simmons article about a possible ECF matchup that might happen (?):

-Cherry-picks an ugly playoff game between DET/BOS (the final was 66-64 in '03) and compares to a WSH/BOS game to explain how basketball has changed. Already in ridiculous territory here.

-Claims that GS "threw away the center position." K.

-Obligatory '86 Celtics paragraphs, embedded in six paragraphs about the Warriors, which is in a column that's ostensibly about a Celtics/Cavs matchup. Now more paragraphs about what would happen if the modern-day Warriors played the 80's Celtics or Lakers.

-Now a bunch of paragraphs about IT2.

-Now some more Lebron stuff.

-Concludes with "LeBron against the Little Guy(Thomas)? The perfect superstar battling the imperfect one? It’s the kind of thing that makes sense only in 2017."

I haven't read one of his articles since the ringer started up.

Listened to the Cousin Sal podcast and it's awful. Bummed. Wanted to like it. He has some guidos from jersey on promising their picks of the week. Sounds like a 1-800 pick line.

I don't mind the Cousin Sal podcast.  It's not GOOD by any means, but at least Sal is entertaining.  His buddies are just more numbskulls riding the gravy train like House does.  Hard to blame them.

I thought the BS podcast with the guys talking about changes in media was pretty good. Simmons had some good insight into the ESPN recent happenings without being overly self-serving and his guests were knowledgeable.  Refuse to listen to Corolla babble about idiot movies or Simmons slob Ansari's knob in the more recent episodes.

They are complete squares, to boot.

I'm willing to give Sal ten episodes or so, I think he'll figure it out. He's one of the funniest people around imo.

That Keri tweet really killed Simmons for me, can't take him seriously after that.

The Aziz Ansari inteview was great.  AA really had trouble continuing when they talked about a former friend who died.  It's rare that you hear someone public get choked up like that over something real (not just NFL HOF induction).

I'll give it a while too. Big fan.

First episode was painful. I didn't finish it. Second was a great step. I think they'll work it out.

Anyone listen to Larry Wilmore? I'm impressed he pulled a name like that into the network.

I liked this too, obviously more for the other guys. But there was something mentioned early on that I literally LOLed at. They were talking about the Sports Reporters and the WSJ guy mentioned how hard it is to go with a weekly "take" show in this climate. Simmons then chimed in with his stupid impersonation voice about parachuting in to offer takes that are 24 hours late with "more profound takes".

MOTHER####ER do you remember your failed show?!

In fairness I thought Simmons did a good job with the Aziz interview, except for the part when he first brought up Harris Wittels because he had a story to share, and Aziz choked up a bit, got quiet, and there was a long pause...

"SO HE DIED and..."

And maybe also don't tell the guy that you have no idea where his dear friend's bequeathed items ended up. Hold that one for just you.

That was painful to listen to - it would have been difficult for Simmons to handle that topic more awkwardly.

Oh #### I have to listen to this now

I'm 4 minutes in and, not breaking any new ground here, but does Simmons really not realize he talks too much on these? Buddy I promise you people aren't downloading your podcast with Aziz to hear you talk over him constantly.

I can handle a House pod where House is talking thru a McDonald's drive-thru mic once in a while. But when Simmons is talking thru a Burger King drive-thru mic I'm out. Idiot.

Bill Simmons‏ @BillSimmons

I'm not going to Game 2 tonight but believe it's crucial for C's fans to loudly chant "You're a ba-by!" every time LeBrob #####es at a ref.
Siiiiiiiiiick burn.

What? You're terrible, that show is fantastic
It's my favorite show on Netflix, and maybe favorite TV show period.   But then again, as an Asian under 40 whose parents are immigrants, I'm right in the heart of their target demographic.

I already hate Boston teams, but he makes me hate them more than anyone.  Blind homerism is so off-putting.

I saw that his site is moving from being hosted by Medium to Vox Media. I have no idea what that means. Something about those guys now being the ones to sell ads.

Listened to his NBA podcast today, where he said Durant should have gone to Boston instead of Golden State.

I liked his mailbag pod a week or so ago but I'm done till Sal comes back on the show.

Good interview with Will Ferrell, although I had to chuckle when he claimed that he'd seen Ferrell's Lifetime movie-of-the week, then proceeded to ask Ferrell to explain the plot of the movie, then expressed total surprise at every single plot point that Ferrell revealed.

The episode with Bryan Curtis and Jim Miller was really interesting.

This is the Bill Simmons that I like. This episode was like reading his research for an upcoming article.  For guys like me that don't care about how the sports content gets to me, just get it to me; it was interesting to listen to stories and insiders talk about how that content gets to me.

HBO and The Ringer's Bill Simmons sits down with editor-at-large Bryan Curtis and New York Times best-selling author Jim Miller to discuss the shake-ups at ESPN (02:30), whether there is a business problem or a content problem (05:30), how the network has approached digital content (14:00), the deals with the NBA, MLB, and the NFL (25:30), the acquisition of Adrian Wojnarowski (40:30), 30 for 30 (54:30), and the demise of Grantland (66:00).
