The Bill Simmons Podcast (1 Viewer)

His son watched a Japanese suicide video :lmao: :lmao:
Technically it wasn't a sucide video - as much as a guy posted with a body blurred out that was dead from a suicide.

Still not good but they are 2 different things :)

ETA: He doesn't not come off as a great parent

But I fully admit My wife and I are on the more conservative side when it comes to thsi stuff

my god listening to Paul Thomas Anderson chew gum for 8 minutes was all i could handle

someone in the studio should have advised him to spit it out

Same with that faux-Limey accent of his.
I was wondering about that.  Even when the "accent" wasn't audible, he used a ton of English phrasing/terms, like "your mates" and saying "Right..." before making a statement.  So much so that I went to his Wiki page to see if he lived in the UK, but it said nothing of the sort - says he lives in SoCal with his wife and kids.  Is that just from hanging around Daniel Day-Lewis for so long?

i've noticed this when talking to people from the coasts for about a decade now

it has really taken off in the last 2 or so years
That's odd.  I've lived 43 of my 45 years within 15 miles of the ocean and have never heard anyone not British do that until PTA.  I guess I'm out of the "loop."

seems particular to people i deal with from NY, NJ and Philadelphia.  but i hear it from the California folks, as well.

lately i'm on a weekly meeting with a woman based in NJ who leads EVERY. SINGLE. FREAKING. SENTENCE. with "right... so..."

might be why i'm sensitive to noticing it

right ... so living in NJ for 46 years - this must be a you thing.

Are we talking "right" like saying "I'll be there right quick"? FOH with that being a Jersey thing.
right, so it's not used like that. it's more like listening to Mark Cuban talk, right. where, right, he uses it constantly, right, to make a point.

Seems like a lot of people just need to be really sure you're able to follow a conversation.

"I was real worried about [Bet X] and I'm glad that I changed my mind just before kickoff."

"The line for [Game Y] seemed strange to me when I made my pick, then I found out afterwards that [Player Z] was injured, so of course if I had known about the injury I would have made the opposite pick."

"The Chiefs and Bills would have covered if not for those injuries to Kelce and Taylor."
Literally the first sentence of the pod "I somehow won money this week despite going 0-4 in my column!" :lmao:

I think he won money because he got paid by everyone on the other side of those picks to go in the opposite direction.

Still like the podcast for the most part but I find it impossible to take him seriously after that Jonah Keri nonsense with the trade value column. That was probably the dumbest thing ever.

Magary might be more insufferable than Bill. But he is absolutely right today.
Love Magary. The first twenty minutes of the deadspin podcast is usually great. The mailbag stuff is meh. Marchman is my kind of curmudgeon so I was sad to see him go but the dude they replaced him with is pretty funny and a good fit with Magary. Definitely worth putting in your rotation if you listen to a lot of podcasts.

I thought "right" was the domain of aspergers folks, as I first noticed nate Silver doing it a while ago, as well as some other math nerds on podcasts/tv.

And "so" I find is largely used by phd/career academic types.  I found that my SIL's ex-boyfriend used this all the time when starting a response to something, and then I noticed it among a lot of other academics on podcasts.  Though that guy was from California, so maybe that's something.

so this article backs up your inclination

Atlanta making the Super Bowl last year, Eagles and Pederson making the Super Bowl this year...the Lombardi mush is strong.

I enjoyed the SalCast this week with Bill, but man how much must have @mr. furley hated the knob slob of Tony Romo for the last 20 minutes?  Especially after Romo "Uhh...ughhh....eeemmmmmm....hmmmm...errrreeeeddddd...." his way through every replay of the AFC Championship?  (I like Romo but he was painfully bad in that game.)
