Republican White House hopeful Rick Perry has declined to say whether he thinks President Barack Obama was born in the United States, all but embracing a debunked controversy known as "birtherism." The Texas governor told Parade magazine in an interview released Sunday that he had "no reason to think" Obama was not born in the United States but said "I don't have a definitive answer" about whether that was the case.
The US Constitution specifies that presidents and vice presidents must be "natural born" citizens of the United States and conservative pundits have fanned the controversy to raise questions about Obama's political legitimacy.
Obama in April released his detailed birth certificate in a bid to quell the controversy, which has dogged him since he was a little-known candidate in 2008 but gained traction this year as the 2012 White House race heats up.
Perry, asked whether he believed that document, replied "I don't know" and said he had recently had dinner with bombastic property mogul and reality TV star Donald Trump, who made "birtherism" into a pet cause earlier this year.
"He doesn't think it's real," Perry said. "I don't have any idea. It doesn't matter. He's the president of the United States. He's elected. It's a distractive issue."
Perry's comments drew a sharp rebuke Monday from Republican strategist Karl Rove, former president George W. Bush's political guru, who warned: "You associate yourself with a nutty view like that and you damage yourself."
"There's a simple answer: Yes, he was born in the United States. Yes, he is eligible to serve," Rove told Fox News. "And don't associate yourself with, sort of, this nutty fringe group."

I'm not sure why this is news or why timschochet bumped this thread with his usual non-thought provoking copy and paste style.

There is a special irony in the fact that this latest story involves Rick Perry. In his last election, he ran against a woman named Debra Medina. Medina, a Ron Paul disciple, was asked at one point whether she believed that our government had anything to do with 9/11. She responded that she didn't know; she didn't have enough information one way or the other. Perry immediately attacked her as a "Truther" and a "nutjob".

If that's his honest answer it's a glaring piece of evidence to the fact the guy is out of touch. That isn't bad? How's that saying go? It's better to keep your mouth shut and keep them guessing than to open it and remove all doubt" or something like that. That applies here.
All he had to say was the birth certificate was good enough for him.
