The Birther Conspiracy Thread (1 Viewer)

Just when you thought it was dead, IT'S BAACCCK!!!!

http://news.yahoo.com/perry-flirts-obama-birther-controversy-151553098.html

Republican White House hopeful Rick Perry has declined to say whether he thinks President Barack Obama was born in the United States, all but embracing a debunked controversy known as "birtherism." The Texas governor told Parade magazine in an interview released Sunday that he had "no reason to think" Obama was not born in the United States but said "I don't have a definitive answer" about whether that was the case.

The US Constitution specifies that presidents and vice presidents must be "natural born" citizens of the United States and conservative pundits have fanned the controversy to raise questions about Obama's political legitimacy.

Obama in April released his detailed birth certificate in a bid to quell the controversy, which has dogged him since he was a little-known candidate in 2008 but gained traction this year as the 2012 White House race heats up.

Perry, asked whether he believed that document, replied "I don't know" and said he had recently had dinner with bombastic property mogul and reality TV star Donald Trump, who made "birtherism" into a pet cause earlier this year.

"He doesn't think it's real," Perry said. "I don't have any idea. It doesn't matter. He's the president of the United States. He's elected. It's a distractive issue."

Perry's comments drew a sharp rebuke Monday from Republican strategist Karl Rove, former president George W. Bush's political guru, who warned: "You associate yourself with a nutty view like that and you damage yourself."

"There's a simple answer: Yes, he was born in the United States. Yes, he is eligible to serve," Rove told Fox News. "And don't associate yourself with, sort of, this nutty fringe group."

Wow, if you're Republican getting told off by Rove you're doing it wrong.

I'm not sure why this is news or why timschochet bumped this thread with his usual non-thought provoking copy and paste style.

Perry basically said, I don't know but it's a non-issue. How is that news?

As usual, its an easy way to get around talking about real issues like jobs or the economy to drag up 2 year old news stories that no one on earth gives a #### about.

There is a special irony in the fact that this latest story involves Rick Perry. In his last election, he ran against a woman named Debra Medina. Medina, a Ron Paul disciple, was asked at one point whether she believed that our government had anything to do with 9/11. She responded that she didn't know; she didn't have enough information one way or the other. Perry immediately attacked her as a "Truther" and a "nutjob".

Not sure what fight you are referring to, but since no one answered any of my questions no I guess I don't realize that.

If your question is "why is this an issue?" the answer is that it's an issue if a guy who's running for president doesn't know something that everyone else in America outside of a few completely oblivious people or complete nutjobs knows, because it was in the news forever and was on the front page of the newspaper/online news sites several times. It makes him either one of the oblivious people or one of the nutjobs. Now I happen to agree with you that it's not really "news" that Perry is either oblivious or a nutjob- I've known that for quite some time. But since he's running for president and there are apparently still a few people who support him, I guess that's kind of newsworthy.

It was a well thought out answer. But it was also completely unnecessary for you. I already made the correct response for your posts, and that is :lmao:

Perry admits that Birther issues is "Fun"

Q. Why did you choose to keep the birther issue alive?

A. It’s a good issue to keep alive. You know, Donald [Trump] has got to have some fun. It’s fun to poke him a little bit and say “Hey, let’s see your grades and your birth certificate.” I don’t have a clue about where the president — and what this birth certificate says. But it’s also a great distraction. I’m not distracted by it.

Perhaps you should ask Perry why he's bringing it back up? The talking heads last night were suggesting that it's a ploy by Perry to drum up/energize support from the ~ 25% of the Republican base who still believe Obama isn't a citizen.

Just the opposite. Obama and his political advisors LOVE this stuff coming back up. It marginalizes Perry and helps Obama amongst independents.

Perry's in 5th, trailing Ron Paul, in the latest NYT poll. Don't see how it would help Obama at this point.

Seriously. What kind of distractions is Perry distracted by, if not great ones?Wine snobs, and even prissy tea snobs, I can understand. But distraction snobs?

Perry just lost my vote.

Because then candidates 1-4 will have questions asked them regarding the whole birther situation. And then it becomes a distraction...Again...Again

So you would prefer Perry lie?He was asked a question. He responded with honesty, "I don't know." How is that bad in any context?
If that's his honest answer it's a glaring piece of evidence to the fact the guy is out of touch. That isn't bad? How's that saying go? It's better to keep your mouth shut and keep them guessing than to open it and remove all doubt" or something like that. That applies here.

 All he had to say was the birth certificate was good enough for him.

Maybe it was an issue he felt wasn't worth nearly as much attention as you seem to think it's worth....

How would you feel if Perry was asked if Iraq had WMDs in the early 90s and he said "I don't know"?
